First-principles investigation of small polarons in rhombohedral NaNbO$_{3}$

Sodium niobate (NaNbO$_{3}$) is a perovskite oxide and a key component of emerging lead-free antiferroelectric capacitors for high-energy-density applications. However, its performance can be hindered by irreversible phase transitions and leakage currents associated with low electrical resistivity. Defect and doping engineering offers a potential way to overcome these problems, but its use requires a detailed understanding of electronic, ionic, and polaron charge-compensation mechanisms, where the role of polarons remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the stability of small hole and electron polarons in rhombohedral NaNbO$_{3}$, which is a structurally well-defined model system that avoids lattice-dynamical instabilities. Trapping energies are calculated using density-functional theory corrected by a Hubbard $U$, using the enforced-piecewise-linearity approach including finite-size scaling. For the small hole-polaron centered on O-2$p$ orbital, we find a trapping energy of $-$0.65 (eV) and an adiabatic migration barrier of 0.32 (eV) determined by nudged-elastic-band calculations. In contrast, we show that excess electrons do not self-trap on Nb-4$d$ orbitals, reflecting weak electron-phonon coupling in the conduction band manifold. These results identify oxygen as an intrinsic hole trap in NaNbO$_{3}$ and highlight the importance of including hole polarons in defect models of NaNbO$_{3}$-based electroceramics.

Intense sulphurization process can lead to superior heterojunction properties in Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)$_2$ thin-film solar cells

Sulphurization processes in Cu(In,Ga)Se$_2$ thin-film solar cells has been intensively studied in the last decade as a viable alternative to the existing Ga-grading. The main advantage of using S grading is that by substituting Se with S we will achieve not only an upshift of the conduction-band minimum as done by employing Ga grading, but also a downshift of the valence-band maximum. Several existing studies stipulate that S is very often inserted in too high concentrations into Cu(In,Ga)Se$_2$ absorber by sulphurization resulting in a deteriorated device performance instead of the expected beneficial effect. However, we demonstrate here that the intense sulphurization process when accompanied by Ga-grading leads to improved electrical properties of the buffer/absorber heterojunction. More exactly, this double grading at the absorber surface leads to strong reduction of the p-doping and hence to a change in the band diagram. This work also proves that the intense sulphurization process is accompanied by strong structural and chemical changes, i.e., by the formation of a S-rich CuIn(S,Se)$_2$ compound at the absorber surface. Finally, all these experimental findings were complemented by ab-initio calculations of the conduction-band and valence-band offsets between absorber and buffer obtained by using density functional theory. Hence, the present work opens up new possibilities for synthesizing Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2 solar cells with superior cell performance when using an intense sulphurization process.

A Model for Optimizing the Health and Economic Impacts of Covid-19 under Social Distancing Measures; A Study for the Number of Passengers and their Seating Arrangements in Aircrafts

Covid-19 has had a disastrous economic impact on countries and industries as countries have gone through the lockdown process to reduce the health impact of Covid-19. As countries have started lifting Covid-19 related restrictions, businesses have been allowed to again have on-site customers. However, just a limited number of people are being allowed on-site as long as social distancing measures are being followed. This has resulted in heavy burdens on businesses as their number of customers have decreased substantially. In this study, we propose a model to minimize the economic impact of Covid-19 for businesses that have implemented social distancing measures, as well as to minimize the health impact of Covid-19 for their customers and employees. We introduce the quantity Spread in which minimizing Spread gives the optimum number and arrangement of people at a given site while applying social distancing measures. We apply our model to a real-world scenario and optimize the number of passengers and their arrangements under a social distancing measure for two different popular aircraft seat layouts using the Annealing Monte Carlo technique. We obtain the optimal numbers and optimal arrangements of passengers considering both family groups and individual passengers for the social distancing measure. The obtained optimal arrangements of passengers show complex patterns with groups and individual passengers mixed in complex and non-trivial ways. This demonstrates the necessity of using our model or its variants to find these optimal arrangements. In addition, we show that any other arrangements of passengers with the same number of passengers is a suboptimal arrangement with higher health risks as a result of less distance between passengers. Our model could be implemented for other social situations such as sports events, theaters, medical centers, etc.

Quantum phase diagram of $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg $S=1/2$ antiferromagnet in honeycomb lattice: a modified spin wave study

Using modified spin wave (MSW) method, we study the $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model with first and second neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. For symmetric $S=1/2$ model, with the same couplings for all the equivalent neighbors, we find three phase in terms of frustration parameter ${\barα=J_2/J_1}$: (1) a commensurate collinear ordering with staggered magnetization (N{é}el.I state) for $0\leq{\barα}\lesssim 0.207$ , (2) a magnetically gapped disordered state for $0.207\lesssim{\barα}\lesssim 0.369$, preserving all the symmetries of the Hamiltonian and lattice, hence by definition is a quantum spin liquid (QSL) state and (3) a commensurate collinear ordering in which two out of three nearest neighbor magnetizations are antiparallel and the remaining pair are parallel (N{é}el.II state), for $0.396\lesssim{\barα}\leq 1$. We also explore the phase diagram of distorted $J_1-J_2$ model with $S=1/2$. Distortion is introduced as an inequality of one nearest neighbor coupling with the other two. This yields a richer phase diagram by the appearance of a new gapped QSL, a gapless QSL and also a valence bond crystal (VBC) phase in addition to the previously three phases found for undistorted model.

Variational wave functions for the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice: Spin liquids and spiral orders

By using variational wave functions and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we investigate the complete phase diagram of the Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice, where two out of three bonds have super-exchange couplings $J$ and the third one has instead $J^\prime$. This model interpolates between the square lattice and the isotropic triangular one, for $J^\prime/J \le 1$, and between the isotropic triangular lattice and a set of decoupled chains, for $J/J^\prime \le 1$. We consider all the fully-symmetric spin liquids that can be constructed with the fermionic projective-symmetry group classification [Y. Zhou and X.-G. Wen, arXiv:cond-mat/0210662] and we compare them with the spiral magnetic orders that can be accommodated on finite clusters. Our results show that, for $J^\prime/J \le 1$, the phase diagram is dominated by magnetic orderings, even though a spin-liquid state may be possible in a small parameter window, i.e., $0.7 \lesssim J^\prime/J \lesssim 0.8$. In contrast, for $J/J^\prime \le 1$, a large spin-liquid region appears close to the limit of decoupled chains, i.e., for $J/J^\prime \lesssim 0.6$, while magnetically ordered phases with spiral order are stabilized close to the isotropic point.
