Scalar cosmological perturbation in an inflationary brane world driven by the bulk inflaton

We investigate scalar perturbations from inflation in a bulk inflaton braneworld model. Using the generalized longitudinal gauge, we derive and solve the full set of scalar perturbation equations. Our exact results support the recent argument that for the de Sitter brane the square of the radion mass is not positive, showing that unlike the flat brane case, the de Sitter brane is not stable.

Shortcuts in a Dynamical Universe and the Horizon Problem

We consider the dynamics of a FRW brane in a purely AdS background, from the point of view of the bulk, and explicitly construct the geodesical behaviour of gravitational signs leaving and subsequently returning to the brane. In comparison with photons following a geodesic inside the brane, we verify that shortcuts exist, though they are extremely small for today's Universe. However, we show that at times just before nucleosynthesis, if high redshifts were available, the effect could be sufficiently large to solve the horizon problem. Assuming an inflationary epoch in the brane evolution, we argue that the influence of those signs trought the extra dimension in the causal structure cannot be neglected. This effect could be relevant for probing the extra dimension in inflationary scenarios.

Shortcuts in Domain Walls and the Horizon Problem

We consider a dynamical membrane world in a space-time with scalar bulk matter described by domain walls. Using the solutions to Einstein field equations and Israel conditions we investigate the possibility of having shortcuts for gravitons leaving the wall and returning subsequently. As it turns out, they usually appear under mild conditions. In the comparison with photons following a geodesic inside the brane, we verify that shortcuts exist. For some Universes they are small, but there are cases where shortcuts are effective. In these cases we expect them to play a significant role in the solution of the horizon problem.

The Elliptic Solutions to the Friedmann equation and the Verlinde's Maps

We considered the solutions of the Friedmann equation in several setups, arguing that the Weierstra$ß$ form of the solutions leads to connections with some Conformal Field Theory on a torus. Thus a link with the Cardy entropy formula is obtained in a quite natural way. The argument is shown to be valid in a four dimensional radiation dominated universe with a cosmological constant as well as in four further different Universes.

Dynamics and holographic discreteness of tachyonic inflation

We consider issues related to tachyonic inflation with inverse-power-law potential. We find the solution of the evolution equations in the slow roll limit in FRW as well as in the brane cosmology. Using the holographic entropy bound, we estimate the quantum-gravitational discreteness of tachyonic inflation perturbations.

Support of dS/CFT correspondence from perturbations of three dimensional spacetime

We discuss the relation between bulk de Sitter three-dimensional spacetime and the corresponding conformal field theory at the boundary, in the framework of the exact quasinormal mode spectrum. We show that the quasinormal mode spectrum corresponds exactly to the spectrum of thermal excitations of Conformal Field Theory at the past boundary I^-, together with the spectrum of the Conformal Field Theory at the future boundary I^+.

Shortcuts for Graviton Propagation in a Six Dimensional Brane World Model

We consider a six dimensional brane world model with asymmetric warp factors for time and both extra spatial coordinates, $y$ and $z$. We derive the set of differential equations governing the shortest graviton path and numerically solve it for AdS-Schwarzschild and AdS-Reissner-Nordström bulks. In both cases we derive a set of conditions for the existence of shortcuts in bulks with shielded singularities and show some examples of shortcuts obtained under these conditions. Consequences are discussed.

Aspects of Higher Order Gravity and Holography

Some thermodynamical properties of Lovelock gravity are discussed in several space-time dimensions, the holographic principle being one of the ingredients of the discussion. As it turns out, the area law and the brickwall method, though correct for the Einstein-Hilbert theory, may fail to work in general.

The shortest cut in brane cosmology

We consider brane cosmology studying the shortest null path on the brane for photons, and in the bulk for gravitons. We derive the differential equation for the shortest path in the bulk for a 1+4 cosmological metric. The time cost and the redshifts for photons and gravitons after traveling their respective path are compared. We consider some numerical solutions of the shortest path equation, and show that there is no shortest path in the bulk for the Randall-Sundrum vacuum brane solution, the linear cosmological solution of Binétruy, et al for $ω= -1, -{2/3}$, and for some expanding brane universes.

Scalar wave propagation in topological black hole backgrounds

We consider the evolution of a scalar field coupled to curvature in topological black hole spacetimes. We solve numerically the scalar wave equation with different curvature-coupling constant $ξ$ and show that a rich spectrum of wave propagation is revealed when $ξ$ is introduced. Relations between quasinormal modes and the size of different topological black holes have also been investigated.

Scale Invariance in a Perturbed Einstein-de Sitter Cosmology

This paper seeks to check the validity of the "apparent fractal conjecture" (Ribeiro 2001ab: gr-qc/9909093, astro-ph/0104181), which states that the observed power-law behaviour for the average density of large-scale distribution of galaxies arises when some observational quantities, selected by their relevance in average density profile determination, are calculated along the past light cone. Implementing these conditions in the proposed set of observational relations profoundly changes the behaviour of many observables in the standard cosmological models. In particular, the average density becomes observationally inhomogeneous, even in the spatially homogeneous spacetime of standard cosmology, change which was already analysed by Ribeiro (1992b, 1993, 1994, 1995: astro-ph/9910145) for a non-perturbed model. Here we derive observational relations in a perturbed Einstein-de Sitter cosmology by means of the perturbation scheme proposed by Abdalla and Mohayaee (1999: astro-ph/9810146), where the scale factor is expanded in power series to yield perturbative terms. The differential equations derived in this perturbative context, and other observables necessary in our analysis, are solved numerically. The results show that our perturbed Einstein-de Sitter cosmology can be approximately described by a decaying power-law like average density profile, meaning that the dust distribution of this cosmology has a scaling behaviour compatible with the power-law profile of the density-distance correlation observed in the galaxy catalogues. These results show that, in the context of this work, the apparent fractal conjecture is correct.

New superconducting states in the Hubbard model

By acting on the excited states at half-filling in the positive-$U$ Hubbard model with the $η$-pairing operators, we found some new superconducting states in the Hubbard model away from half-filling. Such eigenstates are different from the zero-pair and one-pair states introduced by Yang. It is shown that the one-pair states are not the ground-states and possess ODLRO.

Black Hole entropy by the brick wall method in four and five dimensions with U(1) charges

Using the brick wall method we compute the statistical entropy of a scalar field in a nontrivial background, in two different cases. These background are generated by four and five dimensional black holes with four and three U(1) charges respectively. The Bekenstein entropy formula is generally obeyed, but corrections are discussed in the latter case.

Information transport by sine-Gordon solitons in microtubules

We study the problem of information propagation in brain microtubules. After considering the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a fluid of permanent electric dipoles, the problem reduces to the sine-Gordon wave equation in one space and one time dimensions. The problem of propagation of information is thus set.
