$\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic cohomology of schemes

Voevodsky outlined a conjectural programme that his slice filtration in motivic homotopy theory should give rise to a good theory of $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic cohomology. This paper achieves his vision in the generality of arbitrary quasicompact, quasiseparated schemes, by introducing a theory of $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic cohomology which is related to Weibel's homotopy $K$-theory via an Atiyah--Hirzebruch spectral sequence, and which we compare to \'etale and syntomic cohomology in the style of the original conjectures of Beilinson and Lichtenbaum. In addition, it is represented by an absolute motivic spectrum and therefore satisfies cdh descent, and modules over it offer a candidate for the derived category of $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motives. We establish some of Voevodsky's open conjectures on slices, in particular relating the zeroth slice of the motivic sphere to homotopy $K$-theory. In the final section we prove analogous results for the Hermitian $K$-theory of qcqs schemes on which $2$ is invertible. As an auxiliary tool we introduce cdh-motivic cohomology, defined as the cdh sheafification of the left Kan extension of the motivic cohomology of smooth $\mathbb{Z}$-schemes. We offer a new approach to control the latter, independent of previous work on $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic cohomology of smooth schemes over mixed characteristic Dedekind domains: our approach is based on recent developments in $p$-adic cohomology, in particular syntomic and prismatic cohomology. The cdh-motivic cohomology is also a necessary ingredient in the last two authors' and Bouis' construction of non-$\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic cohomology of qcqs schemes.

Motivic Steenrod operations at the characteristic via infinite ramification

We construct motivic power operations on the mod-$p$ motivic cohomology of $\Fb_p$-schemes using a motivic refinement of Nizio{\l}'s theorem. The key input is a purity theorem for motivic cohomology established by Levine. Our operations satisfy the expected properties (naturality, Adem relations, and the Cartan formula) for all bidegrees, generalizing previous results of Primozic which were only know along the ``Chow diagonal.'' We offer geometric applications of our construction: 1) an example of non-(quasi-)smoothable algebraic cycle at the characteristic, 2) an answer to the motivic Steenrod problem at the characteristic, 3) a counterexample to the integral version of a crystalline Tate conjecture.

On filtered algebraic $K$-theory of stacks I: characteristic zero

Given a compact Lie group $G$ acting on a space $X$, the classical Atiyah-Segal completion theorem identifies topological $K$-theory of the homotopy quotient $X/G$ with an explicit completion of $G$-equivariant topological $K$-theory of $X$. We prove an analog of this result for algebraic $K$-theory over a field of characteristic 0. In our setting $G$ is a reductive group that acts on a derived algebraic space $X$ with the assumption that all stabilizer groups are nice (in the sense of Alper). Our main result identifies the value $R^{\mathrm{dAff}}K([X/G])$ of right Kan extension of the $K$-theory functor from schemes to stacks with the completion of $K$-theory of the category $\mathrm{Perf}([X/G])$ at the augmentation ideal of $K_0(\mathrm{Rep}(G))$. The main novelty of our results is that $X$ is allowed to be singular or even derived. This generality is achieved by employing and improving analogous versions of completion theorem for negative cyclic homology (after Ben-Zvi--Nadler and Chen) and for homotopy $K$-theory (after van den Bergh--Tabuada). We also show that in the singular setting the completion theorem does not necessarily hold without the nice stabilizer assumption. We view our results as a part of the general paradigm of extending the motivic filtration on algebraic $K$-theory of schemes to algebraic $K$-theory of stacks.

Unstable motivic and real-\'etale homotopy theory

We prove that for any base scheme $S$, real \'etale motivic (unstable) homotopy theory over $S$ coincides with unstable semialgebraic topology over $S$ (that is, sheaves of spaces on the real spectrum of $S$). Moreover we show that for pointed connected motivic spaces over $S$, the real \'etale motivic localization is given by smashing with the telescope of the map $\rho: S^0 \to {\mathbb G}_m$.

On the $K$-theory of the $p$-adic unit disk

In this note, we study the $p$-complete topological cyclic homology of the affine line relative to a ring $A$ which is smooth over a perfectoid ring $R$. Denoting by $NTC(A; \mathbb{Z}_p)$ the spectrum which measures the failure of $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariance on $A$, we observe a kind of Quillen-Lichtenbaum phenomena for $NTC(A; \mathbb{Z}_p)$ -- that it is isomorphic to its own $K(1)$-localization in a specified range of degrees which depends on the relative dimension of $A$. Somewhat surprisingly, this range is better than considerations following from a theorem of Bhatt-Mathew and étale-to-syntomic comparisons. Via the Dundas-Goodwillie-McCarthy theorem, we obtain a description of the algebraic $K$-theory of $p$-completed affine line over such rings.

Proper splittings and projectivity for good moduli spaces

We show that any good moduli space $π: \mathcal{X} \to Y$ has a splitting after a proper, generically finite covering of $Y$. As an application we generalize Kollár's ampleness lemma to give a criterion for projectivity of a good moduli space.

Equivariant algebraic $\mathrm{K}$-theory and Artin $L$-functions

In this paper, we generalize the Quillen-Lichtenbaum Conjecture relating special values of Dedekind zeta functions to algebraic $\mathrm{K}$-groups. The former has been settled by Rost-Voevodsky up to the Iwasawa Main Conjecture. Our generalization extends the scope of this conjecture to Artin $L$-functions of Galois representations of finite, function, and totally real number fields. The statement of this conjecture relates norms of the special values of these $L$-functions to sizes of equivariant algebraic $\mathrm{K}$-groups with coefficients in an equivariant Moore spectrum attached to a Galois representation. We prove this conjecture in many cases, integrally, except up to a possible factor of powers of $2$ in the non-abelian and totally real number field case. In the finite field case, we further determine the group structures of their equivariant algebraic $\mathrm{K}$-groups with coefficients in Galois representations. At heart, our method lifts the Möbius inversion formula for factorizations of zeta functions as a product of $L$-functions, to the $E_1$-page of an equivariant spectral sequence converging to equivariant algebraic $\mathrm{K}$-groups. Additionally, the spectral Mackey functor structure on equivariant $\mathrm{K}$-theory allows us to incorporate certain ramified extensions that appear in these $L$-functions.

The Lichtenbaum-Quillen dimension of complex varieties

The Lichtenbaum-Quillen conjecture for smooth complex varieties states that algebraic and topological K-theory with finite coefficients become isomorphic in high degrees. We define the "Lichtenbaum-Quillen dimension" of a variety in terms of the point where this happens, show that it is surprisingly computable, and analyze many examples. It gives an obstruction to rationality, but one that turns out to be weaker than unramified cohomology and some related birational invariants defined by Colliot-Th\'el\`ene and Voisin using Bloch-Ogus theory. Because it is compatible with semi-orthogonal decompositions, however, it allows us to prove some new cases of the integral Hodge conjecture using homological projective duality, and to compute the higher algebraic K-theory of the Kuznetsov components of the derived categories of some Fano varieties.

The motivic Adams conjecture

We solve a motivic version of the Adams conjecture with the exponential characteristic of the base field inverted. In the way of the proof we obtain a motivic version of mod k Dold theorem and give a motivic version of Brown's trick studying the homogeneous variety of maximal tori in a general linear group, which turns out to be not stably A1-connected. We also show that the higher motivic stable stems are of bounded torsion.

Motivic cohomology of equicharacteristic schemes

We construct a theory of motivic cohomology for quasi-compact, quasi-separated schemes of equal characteristic, which is related to non-connective algebraic $K$-theory via an Atiyah--Hirzebruch spectral sequence, and to \'etale cohomology in the range predicted by Beilinson and Lichtenbaum. On smooth varieties over a field our theory recovers classical motivic cohomology, defined for example via Bloch's cycle complex. Our construction uses trace methods and (topological) cyclic homology. As predicted by the behaviour of algebraic $K$-theory, the motivic cohomology is in general sensitive to singularities, including non-reduced structure, and is not $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant. It nevertheless has good geometric properties, satisfying for example the projective bundle formula and pro cdh descent. Further properties of the theory include a Nesterenko--Suslin comparison isomorphism to Milnor $K$-theory, and a vanishing range which simultaneously refines Weibel's conjecture about negative $K$-theory and a vanishing result of Soul\'e for the Adams eigenspaces of higher algebraic $K$-groups. We also explore the relation of the theory to algebraic cycles, showing in particular that the Levine--Weibel Chow group of zero cycles on a surface arises as a motivic cohomology group.

Normed motivic spectra and power operations

We use motivic colimits to construct power operations on the homotopy groups of normed motivic spectra admitting a (normed) map from HF_2. We establish enough of their standard properties to prove that the motivic dual Steenrod algebra is generated by one element under ring and power operations, establishing a motivic analog of Steinberger's theorem.

Motivic colimits and extended powers

We define a notion of colimit for diagrams in a motivic category indexed by a presheaf of spaces (e.g. an étale classifying space), and we study basic properties of this construction. As a case study, we construct the motivic analogs of the classical extended and generalized powers, which refine the categorical versions of these constructions as special cases. We also offer more computationally tractable models of these constructions using equivariant motivic homotopy theory. This is the first in a series of papers on power operations in motivic stable homotopy theory.

Twisted K-theory in motivic homotopy theory

In this paper, we study twisted algebraic $K$-theory from a motivic viewpoint. For a smooth variety $X$ over a field of characteristic zero and an Azumaya algebra $\mathcal{A}$ over $X$, we construct the $\mathcal{A}$-twisted motivic spectral sequence, by computing the slices of the motivic twisted algebraic $K$-theory spectrum as a twisted form of motivic cohomology. This generalizes previous results due to Kahn-Levine where $\mathcal{A}$ is assumed to be pulled back from a base field. Our methods use interaction between the slice filtration and birational geometry. Along the way, we prove a representability result, expressing the motivic space of twisted $K$-theory as an extension of the twisted Grassmannian by the sheaf of "twisted integers". This leads to a proof of cdh descent and Milnor excision for twisted homotopy $K$-theory.

Algebraic Cobordism and Étale Cohomology

Thomason's étale descent theorem for Bott periodic algebraic $K$-theory \cite{aktec} is generalized to any $MGL$ module over a regular Noetherian scheme of finite dimension. Over arbitrary Noetherian schemes of finite dimension, this generalizes the analog of Thomason's theorem for Weibel's homotopy $K$-theory. This is achieved by amplifying the effects from the case of motivic cohomology, using the slice spectral sequence in the case of the universal example of algebraic cobordism. We also obtain integral versions of these statements: Bousfield localization at étale motivic cohomology is the universal way to impose étale descent for these theories. As applications, we describe the étale local objects in modules over these spectra and show that they satisfy the full six functor formalism, construct an étale descent spectral sequence converging to Bott-inverted motivic Landweber exact theories, and prove cellularity and effectivity of the étale versions of these motivic spectra.

On distributivity in higher algebra I: The universal property of bispans

Structures where we have both a contravariant (pullback) and a covariant (pushforward) functoriality that satisfy base change can be encoded by functors out of ($\infty$-)categories of spans (or correspondences). In this paper we study the more complicated setup where we have two pushforwards (an "additive" and a "multiplicative" one), satisfying a distributivity relation. Such structures can be described in terms of bispans (or polynomial diagrams). We show that there exist $(\infty,2)$-categories of bispans, characterized by a universal property: they corepresent functors out of $\infty$-categories of spans where the pullbacks have left adjoints and certain canonical 2-morphisms (encoding base change and distributivity) are invertible. This gives a universal way to obtain functors from bispans, which amounts to upgrading "monoid-like" structures to "ring-like" ones. For example, symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories can be described as product-preserving functors from spans of finite sets, and if the tensor product is compatible with finite coproducts our universal property gives the canonical semiring structure using the coproduct and tensor product. More interestingly, we encode the additive and multiplicative transfers on equivariant spectra as a functor from bispans in finite $G$-sets, extend the norms for finite étale maps in motivic spectra to a functor from certain bispans in schemes, and make $\mathrm{Perf}(X)$ for $X$ a spectral Deligne--Mumford stack a functor of bispans using a multiplicative pushforward for finite étale maps in addition to the usual pullback and pushforward maps. Combining this with the polynomial functoriality of $K$-theory constructed by Barwick, Glasman, Mathew, and Nikolaus, we obtain norms on algebraic $K$-theory spectra.

On étale motivic spectra and Voevodsky's convergence conjecture

We prove a new convergence result for the slice spectral sequence, following work by Levine and Voevodsky. This verifies a derived variant of Voevodsky's conjecture on convergence of the slice spectral sequence. This is, in turn, a necessary ingredient for our main theorem: a Thomason-style étale descent result for the Bott-inverted motivic sphere spectrum, which generalizes and extends previous étale descent results for special examples of motivic cohomology theories. Combined with first author's étale rigidity results, we obtain a complete structural description of the étale motivic stable category.

Milnor excision for motivic spectra

We prove that the $\infty$-category of motivic spectra satisfies Milnor excision: if $A\to B$ is a morphism of commutative rings sending an ideal $I\subset A$ isomorphically onto an ideal of $B$, then a motivic spectrum over $A$ is equivalent to a pair of motivic spectra over $B$ and $A/I$ that are identified over $B/IB$. Consequently, any cohomology theory represented by a motivic spectrum satisfies Milnor excision. We also prove Milnor excision for Ayoub's étale motives over schemes of finite virtual cohomological dimension.
