Edge Modes on Stringy Horizons

For a quantum field of arbitrary mass and spin in the static patch of de Sitter spacetime, the Euclidean partition function receives contributions from edge modes localized on the horizon, expressible in terms of the Harish-Chandra character of the de Sitter group. Considering the flat limit and summing over all string fields, we obtain the partition function of edge modes in string theory near the Minkowski-Rindler horizon. Application of the Kronecker limit formula naturally yields a modular invariant one-loop partition function. The resulting expression generalizes the edge contribution of a massive vector boson in a spontaneously broken gauge theory to the infinite tower in string theory. It is naturally ultraviolet finite and amenable to a state-counting interpretation.

Quantum Entanglement Index in String Theory

We define a notion of `quantum entanglement index' with the aim to compute it for black hole horizons in string theory at one-loop order using the stringy replica method. We consider the horizon of BTZ black holes to construct the relevant conical orbifolds, labeled by an odd integer $N$, and compute the partition function as a function of $N$, corresponding to the fractional indexed R\'enyi entropy. We show that it is free of tachyons and naturally finite both in the ultraviolet and the infrared, even though it is generically ultraviolet divergent in the field theory limit. Thus, the index provides a useful diagnostic of the entanglement structure of string theory without the need for analytic continuation in $N$.

Quantum Features of the Cosmological Horizon

This thesis explores the thermodynamics of the cosmological horizon, aiming to make progress towards a better understanding of the microscopic nature of its entropy. We utilise the constrained nature of low-dimensional gravity to do so and investigate timelike boundaries in these theories, with an emphasis on the stretched horizon holographic picture. Given the success of AdS/CFT, one might try to embed de Sitter inside anti-de Sitter and describe the expanding region from the boundary. In two dimensions, such geometries exist and, by studying them in the presence of a timelike boundary, we find thermally stable solutions. We thus propose a dual matrix model that should describe this geometry, including the expanding region. One way to test this duality would be to compare bulk and boundary correlators. However, for de Sitter this poses a puzzle: in the saddle point approximation two-point functions are given by a sum over geodesics. Such correlation functions exist for any two arbitrary points in de Sitter, but geodesics do not. This is resolved by including complex saddles that appear upon Wick rotating from the sphere. Additionally, one can use the relationship between three-dimensional gravity and Chern-Simons theory to explore thermodynamic contributions to the de Sitter horizon. The Euclidean gravitational path integral provides the exact, all-loop quantum corrected de Sitter entropy. To understand the microscopic origin of this entropy, one hopes to find an analogous Lorentzian calculation that produces this result. This takes the form of an edge-mode theory living close to the cosmological horizon with a complexified gauge group, leading to an unbounded spectrum. To make progress, we study a comparable Abelian theory that leads to an entropy with an entanglement character. Finally, we summarise some new results on edge-mode theories arising from general boundary conditions.

Complex geodesics in de Sitter space

The two-point function of a free massive scalar field on a fixed background can be evaluated in the large mass limit by using a semiclassical geodesic approximation. In de Sitter space, however, this poses a puzzle. Certain spacelike separated points are not connected by real geodesics despite the corresponding two-point function in the Bunch-Davies state being non-vanishing. We resolve this puzzle by considering complex geodesics after analytically continuing to the sphere. We compute one-loop corrections to the correlator and discuss the implications of our results to de Sitter holography.

Interpolating geometries and the stretched dS$_2$ horizon

We investigate dilaton-gravity models whose solutions contain a large portion of the static patch of dS$_2$. The thermodynamic properties of these theories are considered both in the presence of a finite Dirichlet wall, as well as for asymptotically near-AdS$_2$ boundaries. We show that under certain circumstances such geometries, including those endowed with an asymptotically near-AdS$_2$ boundary, can be locally and even globally thermodynamically stable within particular temperature regimes. First order phase transitions reminiscent of the Hawking-Page transition are discussed. For judiciously chosen models, the near-AdS$_2$ boundary can be viewed as a completion of the stretched cosmological dS$_2$ horizon. We speculate on candidate microphysical models.

Three-dimensional de Sitter horizon thermodynamics

We explore thermodynamic contributions to the three-dimensional de Sitter horizon originating from metric and Chern-Simons gauge field fluctuations. In Euclidean signature these are computed by the partition function of gravity coupled to matter semi-classically expanded about the round three-sphere saddle. We investigate a corresponding Lorentzian picture - drawing inspiration from the topological entanglement entropy literature - in the form of an edge-mode theory residing at the de Sitter horizon. We extend the discussion to three-dimensional gravity with positive cosmological constant, viewed (semi-classically) as a complexified Chern-Simons theory. The putative gravitational edge-mode theory is a complexified version of the chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten model associated to the edge-modes of ordinary Chern-Simons theory. We introduce and solve a family of complexified Abelian Chern-Simons theories as a way to elucidate some of the more salient features of the gravitational edge-mode theories. We comment on the relation to the AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ correspondence.
