On a phase--field model of damage for hybrid laminates with cohesive interface

In this paper we investigate a rate--independent model for hybrid laminates described by a damage phase--field approach on two layers coupled with a cohesive law governing the behaviour of their interface in a one-dimensional setup. For the analysis we adopt the notion of energetic evolution, based on global minimisation of the involved energy. Due to the presence of the cohesive zone, as already emerged in literature, compactness issues lead to the introduction of a fictitious variable replacing the physical one which represents the maximal opening of the interface displacement discontinuity reached during the evolution. A new strategy which allows to recover the equivalence between the fictitious and the real variable under general loading--unloading regimes is illustrated. The argument is based on temporal regularity of energetic evolutions. This regularity is achieved by means of a careful balance between the convexity of the elastic energy of the layers and the natural concavity of the cohesive energy of the interface.

Dynamics of two linearly elastic bodies connected by a heavy thin soft viscoelastic layer

In this paper we extend the asymptotic analysis in [LLOO], performed on a structure consisting of two linearly elastic bodies connected by a thin soft nonlinear Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic adhesive layer, to the case in which the total mass of the layer remains strictly positive as its thickness tends to zero. We obtain convergence results by means of a nonlinear version of Trotter's theory of approximation of semigroups acting on variable Hilbert spaces. Differently from the limit models derived in [LLOO], in the present analysis the dynamic effects on the surface to which the layer shrinks do not disappear. Thus, the limiting behavior of the remaining bodies is described not only in terms of their displacements on the contact surface, but also by an additional variable that keeps track of the dynamics in the adhesive layer.

Bounded solutions and their asymptotics for a doubly nonlinear Cahn-Hilliard system

In this paper we deal with a doubly nonlinear Cahn-Hilliard system, where both an internal constraint on the time derivative of the concentration and a potential for the concentration are introduced. The definition of the chemical potential includes two regularizations: a viscosity and a diffusive term. First of all, we prove existence and uniqueness of a bounded solution to the system using a nonstandard maximum-principle argument for time-discretizations of doubly nonlinear equations. Possibly including singular potentials, this novel result brings improvements over previous approaches to this problem. Secondly, under suitable assumptions on the data, we show the convergence of solutions to the respective limit problems once either of the two regularization parameters vanishes.

Structural multiscale topology optimization with stress constraint for additive manufacturing

In this paper a phase-field approach for structural topology optimization for a 3D-printing process which includes stress constraint and potentially multiple materials or multiscales is analyzed. First order necessary optimality conditions are rigorously derived and a numerical algorithm which implements the method is presented. A sensitivity study with respect to some parameters is conducted for a two-dimensional cantilever beam problem. Finally, a possible workflow to obtain a 3D-printed object from the numerical solutions is described and the final structure is printed using a fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer.

Graded-material Design based on Phase-field and Topology Optimization

In the present work we introduce a novel graded-material design based on phase-field and topology optimization. The main novelty of this work comes from the introduction of an additional phase-field variable in the classical single-material phase-field topology optimization algorithm. This new variable is used to grade the material properties in a continuous fashion. Two different numerical examples are discussed, in both of them we perform sensitivity studies to asses the effects of different model parameters onto the resulting structure. From the presented results we can observe that the proposed algorithm adds additional freedom in the design, exploiting the higher flexibility coming from additive manufacturing technology.

A doubly nonlinear Cahn-Hilliard system with nonlinear viscosity

In this paper we discuss a family of viscous Cahn-Hilliard equations with a non-smooth viscosity term. This system may be viewed as an approximation of a "forward-backward" parabolic equation. The resulting problem is highly nonlinear, coupling in the same equation two nonlinearities with the diffusion term. In particular, we prove existence of solutions for the related initial and boundary value problem. Under suitable assumptions, we also state uniqueness and continuous dependence on data.

A nonlinear model for marble sulphation including surface rugosity: theoretical and numerical results

We consider an evolution system describing the phenomenon of marble sulphation of a monument, accounting of the surface rugosity. We first prove a local in time well posedness result. Then, stronger assumptions on the data allow us to establish the existence of a global in time solution. Finally, we perform some numerical simulations that illustrate the main feature of the proposed model.

Global existence for a nonlocal model for adhesive contact

In this paper we address the analytical investigation of a model for adhesive contact, which includes nonlocal sources of damage on the contact surface, such as the elongation. The resulting PDE system features various nonlinearities rendering the unilateral contact conditions, the physical constraints on the internal variables, as well as the integral contributions related to the nonlocal forces. For the associated initial-boundary value problem we obtain a global-in-time existence result by proving the existence of a local solution via a suitable approximation procedure and then by extending the local solution to a global one by a nonstandard prolongation argument.

A rate-independent gradient system in damage coupled with plasticity via structured strains

This contribution deals with a class of models combining isotropic damage with plasticity. We are inspired by It has been inspired by a work by Freddi and Royer-Carfagni, including the case where the inelastic part of the strain only evolves in regions where the material is damaged. The evolution both of the damage and of the plastic variable is assumed to be rate-independent. Existence of solutions is established in the abstract energetic framework elaborated by Mielke and coworkers.

A non-smooth regularization of a forward-backward parabolic equation

In this paper we introduce a model describing diffusion of species by a suitable regularization of a "forward-backward" parabolic equation. In particular, we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions, as well as continuous dependence on data, for a system of partial differential equations and inclusion, which may be interpreted, e.g., as evolving equation for physical quantities such as concentration and chemical potential. The model deals with a constant mobility and it is recovered from a possibly non-convex free-energy density. In particular, we render a general viscous regularization via a maximal monotone graph acting on the time derivative of the concentration and presenting a strong coerciveness property.

Generalized gradient flow structure of internal energy driven phase field systems

In this paper we introduce a general abstract formulation of a variational thermomechanical model, by means of a unified derivation via a generalization of the principle of virtual powers for all the variables of the system, including the thermal one. In particular, choosing as thermal variable the entropy of the system, and as driving functional the internal energy, we get a gradient flow structure (in a suitable abstract setting) for the whole nonlinear PDE system. We prove a global in time existence of (weak) solutions result for the Cauchy problem associated to the abstract PDE system as well as uniqueness in case of suitable smoothness assumptions on the functionals.

On the strongly damped wave equation with constraint

A weak formulation for the so-called "semilinear strongly damped wave equation with constraint" is introduced and a corresponding notion of solution is defined. The main idea in this approach consists in the use of duality techniques in Sobolev-Bochner spaces, aimed at providing a suitable "relaxation" of the constraint term. A global in time existence result is proved under the natural condition that the initial data have finite "physical" energy.

Singular limit of an integrodifferential system related to the entropy balance

A thermodynamic model describing phase transitions with thermal memory, in terms of an entropy equation and a momentum balance for the microforces, is adressed. Convergence results and error estimates are proved for the related integrodifferential system of PDE as the sequence of memory kernels converges to a multiple of a Dirac delta, in a suitable sense.

Analysis of a model coupling volume and surface processes in thermoviscoelasticity

We focus on a highly nonlinear evolutionary abstract PDE system describing volume processes coupled with surfaces processes in thermoviscoelasticity, featuring the quasi-static momentum balance, the equation for the unidirectional evolution of an internal variable on the surface, and the equations for the temperature in the bulk domain and the temperature on the surface. A significant example of our system occurs in the modeling for the unidirectional evolution of the adhesion between a body and a rigid support, subject to thermal fluctuations and in contact with friction. We investigate the related initial-boundary value problem, and in particular the issue of existence of global-in-time solutions, on an abstract level. This allows us to highlight the analytical features of the problem and, at the same time, to exploit the tight coupling between the various equations in order to deduce suitable estimates on (an approximation) of the problem. Our existence result is proved by passing to the limit in a carefully tailored approximate problem, and by extending the obtained local-in-time solution by means of a refined prolongation argument.

Modeling and analysis of a phase field system for damage and phase separation processes in solids

In this work, we analytically investigate a multi-component system for describing phase separation and damage processes in solids. The model consists of a parabolic diffusion equation of fourth order for the concentration coupled with an elliptic system with material dependent coefficients for the strain tensor and a doubly nonlinear differential inclusion for the damage function. The main aim of this paper is to show existence of weak solutions for the introduced model, where, in contrast to existing damage models in the literature, different elastic properties of damaged and undamaged material are regarded. To prove existence of weak solutions for the introduced model, we start with an approximation system. Then, by passing to the limit, existence results of weak solutions for the proposed model are obtained via suitable variational techniques.

Existence of solutions for a mathematical model related to solid-solid phase transitions in shape memory alloys

We consider a strongly nonlinear PDE system describing solid-solid phase transitions in shape memory alloys. The system accounts for the evolution of an order parameter (related to different symmetries of the crystal lattice in the phase configurations), of the stress (and the displacement), and of the absolute temperature. The resulting equations present several technical difficulties to be tackled: in particular, we emphasize the presence of nonlinear coupling terms, higher order dissipative contributions, possibly multivalued operators. As for the evolution of temperature, a highly nonlinear parabolic equation has to be solved for a right hand side that is controlled only in L^1. We prove the existence of a solution for a regularized version, by use of a time discretization technique. Then, we perform suitable a priori estimates which allow us pass to the limit and find a weak global-in-time solution to the system.

A new 3D macroscopic model for shape memory alloys describing martensite reorientation

In this paper we introduce a 3D phenomenological model for shape memory behavior, accounting for: martensite reorientation, asymmetric response of the material to tension/compression, different kinetics between forward and reverse phase transformation. We combine two modeling approaches using scalar and tensorial internal variables. Indeed, we use volume proportions of different configurations of the crystal lattice (austenite and two variants of martensite) as scalar internal variables and the preferred direction of stress-induced martensite as tensorial internal variable. Then, we derive evolution equations by a generalization of the principle of virtual powers, including microforces and micromovements responsible for phase transformation. In addition, we prescribe an evolution law for phase proportions ensuring different evolution laws during forward and reverse transformation of the oriented martensite.

Analysis of a temperature-dependent model for adhesive contact with friction

We propose a model for unilateral contact with adhesion between a viscoelastic body and a rigid support, encompassing thermal and frictional effects. Following the approach by M. Fremond, adhesion is described in terms of a surface damage parameter. The main result of the paper states the existence of global solutions to the associated Cauchy problem. It is proved by passing to the limit in a carefully tailored approximate problem, via variational techniques.
