Lorentzian threads and generalized complexities

Recently, an infinite class of holographic generalized complexities was proposed. These gravitational observables display the behavior required to be duals of complexity, in particular, linear growth at late times and switchback effect. In this work, we aim to understand generalized complexities in the framework of Lorentzian threads. We reformulate the problem in terms of thread distributions and measures and present a program to calculate the infinite family of codimension-one observables. We also outline a path to understand, using threads, the more subtle case of codimension-zero observables.

Imprints of phase transitions on Kasner singularities

Under the AdS/CFT correspondence, asymptotically AdS geometries with backreaction can be viewed as CFT states subject to a renormalization group (RG) flow from an ultraviolet (UV) description towards an infrared (IR) sector. For black holes however, the IR point is the horizon, so one way to interpret the interior is as an analytic continuation to a "trans-IR" imaginary-energy regime. In this paper, we demonstrate that this analytic continuation preserves some imprints of the UV physics, particularly near its "endpoint" at the classical singularity. We focus on holographic phase transitions of geometric objects in round black holes. We first assert the consistency of interpreting such black holes, including their interiors, as RG flows by constructing a monotonic $a$-function. We then explore how UV phase transitions of entanglement entropy and scalar two-point functions, each of which are encoded by bulk geometry under the holographic mapping, are connected to the structure of the near-singularity geometry, which is characterized by Kasner exponents. Using 2d holographic flows triggered by relevant scalar deformations as test beds, we find that the 3d bulk's near-singularity Kasner exponents can be viewed as functions of the UV physics precisely when the deformation is nonzero.

Anisotropic Flows into Black Holes

We consider anisotropic black holes in the context of holographic renormalization group (RG) flows. We construct an $a$-function that is stationary at the boundary and the horizon and prove that it is also monotonic in both the exterior and the interior of the black hole. In spite of the reduced symmetry, we find that the "radial" null energy condition is sufficient to ensure the existence of this monotonic $a$-function. After constructing the $a$-function, we explore a holographic anisotropic $p$-wave superfluid state as a concrete example and numerical testing grounds. In doing so, we find that the $a$-function exhibits nontrivial oscillations in the trans-IR regime while preserving monotonicity. We find evidence that such oscillations appear to drive the trans-IR flow into nontrivial fixed points. We conclude by briefly discussing how our work fits into both the broader program of holographic RG flow and quantum information approaches to probing the black hole interior.

Trans-IR Flows to Black Hole Singularities

We study analytic continuations of holographic renormalization group (RG) flows beyond their infrared (IR) fixed points. Such "trans-IR" flows are a natural framework for describing physics inside of black holes. First, we construct a monotonic holographic $a$-function which counts degrees of freedom along a trans-IR flow. Using this function, we argue that the degrees of freedom "thin out" and vanish when flowing to a trans-IR endpoint, represented by a Kasner singularity. We then recast well-studied quantum information probes in the language of trans-IR flows, finding that entanglement and complexity from volume generally fail to fully probe the trans-IR while 2-point correlations and complexity from action generally do so in a complementary manner.

Page Curves and Bath Deformations

We study the black hole information problem within a semiclassically gravitating AdS$_d$ black hole coupled to and in equilibrium with a $d$-dimensional thermal conformal bath. We deform the bath state by a relevant scalar deformation, triggering a holographic RG flow whose "trans-IR" region deforms from a Schwarzschild geometry to a Kasner universe. The setup manifests two independent scales which control both the extent of coarse-graining and the entanglement dynamics when counting Hawking degrees of freedom in the bath. In tuning either, we find nontrivial changes to the Page time and Page curve. We consequently view the Page curve as a probe of the holographic RG flow, with a higher Page time manifesting as a result of increased coarse-graining of the bath degrees of freedom.

Sparse SYK and traversable wormholes

We investigate two sparse Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) systems coupled by a bilinear term as a holographic quantum mechanical description of an eternal traversable wormhole in the low temperature limit. Each SYK system consists of $N$ Majorana fermions coupled by random $q$-body interactions. The degree of sparseness is captured by a regular hypergraph in such a way that the Hamiltonian contains exactly $k\,N$ independent terms. We improve on the theoretical understanding of the sparseness property by using known measures of hypergraph expansion. We show that the sparse version of the two coupled SYK model is gapped with a ground state close to a thermofield double state. Using Krylov subspace and parallelization techniques, we simulate the system for $q=4$ and $q=8.$ The sparsity of the model allows us to explore larger values of $N$ than the ones existing in the literature for the all-to-all SYK. We analyze in detail the two-point functions and the transmission amplitude of signals between the two systems. We identify a range of parameters where revivals obey the scaling predicted by holography and signals can be interpreted as traversing the wormhole.

Warped Information and Entanglement Islands in AdS/WCFT

We use the notion of double holography to study Hawking radiation emitted by the eternal BTZ black hole in equilibrium with a thermal bath, but in the form of warped CFT$_2$ degrees of freedom. In agreement with the literature, we find entanglement islands and a phase transition in the entanglement surface, but our results differ significantly from work in AdS/CFT in three major ways: (1) the late-time entropy decreases in time, (2) island degrees of freedom exist at all times, and not just at late times, with the phase transition changing whether or not these degrees of freedom include the black hole interior, and (3) the physics involves a field-theoretic IR divergence, emerging when the boundary interval is too big relative to the black hole's inverse temperature. This behavior in the entropy appears to be consistent with the non-unitarity of holographic warped CFT$_2$ and demonstrates that the islands are not a phenomenon restricted to black hole information in unitary setups.

Constraining higher order gravities with subregion duality

In higher derivative theories, gravity can travel slower or faster than light. With this feature in mind, we revisit the construction of the causal and entanglement wedges in this type of theories, and argue that they must be constructed using the fastest mode instead of null rays. We show that the property of causal wedge inclusion, i.e., the fact that the causal wedge must be contained in the entanglement wedge, leads to more stringent constraints on the couplings than those imposed by hyperbolicity and boundary causality. Our results imply that the full power of subregion-subregion duality could lead to the same conclusions previously obtained based on high energy graviton scattering. We illustrate our findings with a systematic analysis in Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

A Killing Vector Treatment of Multiboundary Wormholes

The two-sided BTZ black hole has been instrumental in elucidating several aspects of AdS/CFT. Similarly, multiboundary wormholes provide a useful and rich arena in which probing questions of quantum gravity can be posed and explored. In this work, we find the explicit forms of the Killing vectors needed to construct three-boundary wormholes, with and without rotation, as quotients of AdS$_3$. We ensure that our method captures the full moduli space of such wormholes and elaborate on the generalization of our procedure to more exotic multiboundary spaces, including higher genus.

Complexity of Mixed States in QFT and Holography

We study the complexity of Gaussian mixed states in a free scalar field theory using the 'purification complexity'. The latter is defined as the lowest value of the circuit complexity, optimized over all possible purifications of a given mixed state. We argue that the optimal purifications only contain the essential number of ancillary degrees of freedom necessary in order to purify the mixed state. We also introduce the concept of 'mode-by-mode purifications' where each mode in the mixed state is purified separately and examine the extent to which such purifications are optimal. We explore the purification complexity for thermal states of a free scalar QFT in any number of dimensions, and for subregions of the vacuum state in two dimensions. We compare our results to those found using the various holographic proposals for the complexity of subregions. We find a number of qualitative similarities between the two in terms of the structure of divergences and the presence of a volume law. We also examine the 'mutual complexity' in the various cases studied in this paper.

Complexity-action of subregions with corners

In the past, the study of the divergence structure of the holographic entanglement entropy on singular boundary regions uncovered cut-off independent coefficients. These coefficients were shown to be universal and to encode important field theory data. Inspired by these lessons we study the UV divergences of subregion complexity-action (CA) in a region with corner (kink). We develop a systematic approach to study all the divergence structures, and we emphasize that the counter term that restores reparameterization invariance on the null boundaries plays a crucial role in simplifying the results and rendering them more transparent. We find that a general form of subregion CA contains a part dependent on the null generator normalizations and a part that is independent of them. The former includes a volume contribution as well as an area contribution. We comment on the origin of the area term as entanglement entropy, and point out that its presence constitutes a robust difference between the two prescriptions to calculate subregion complexity (-action v.s. -volume). We also find universal $\logδ$ divergence associated with the kink feature of the subregion. Similar flat angle limit as the subregion-CV result is obtained.

Rotating traversable wormholes in AdS

In this work we explore the effect of rotation in the size of a traversable wormhole obtained via a double trace boundary deformation. We find that at fixed temperature the size of the wormhole increases with the angular momentum $J/M\ell$. The amount of information that can be sent through the wormhole increases as well. However, for the type of interaction considered, the wormhole closes as the temperature approaches the extremal limit. We also briefly consider the scenario where the boundary coupling is not spatially homogeneous and show how this is reflected in the wormhole opening.

On holographic entanglement entropy of Horndeski black holes

We study entanglement entropy in a particular tensor-scalar theory: Horndeski gravity. Our goal is two-fold: investigate the Lewkowycz-Maldacena proposal for entanglement entropy in the presence of a tensor-scalar coupling and address a puzzle existing in the literature regarding the thermal entropy of asymptotically AdS Horndeski black holes. Using the squashed cone method, i.e. turning on a conical singularity in the bulk, we derive the functional for entanglement entropy in Horndeski gravity. We analyze the divergence structure of the bulk equation of motion. Demanding that the leading divergence of the transverse component of the equation of motion vanishes we identify the surface where to evaluate the entanglement functional. We show that the surface obtained is precisely the one that minimizes said functional. By evaluating the entanglement entropy functional on the horizon we obtain the thermal entropy for Horndeski black holes; this result clarifies discrepancies in the literature. As an application of the functional derived we find the minimal surfaces numerically and study the entanglement plateaux.

Holographic entanglement chemistry

We use the Iyer-Wald formalism to derive an extended first law of entanglement that includes variations in the cosmological constant, Newton's constant and --in the case of higher-derivative theories-- all the additional couplings of the theory. In Einstein gravity, where the number of degrees of freedom $N^2$ of the dual field theory is a function of $Λ$ and $G$, our approach allows us to vary $N$ keeping the field theory scale fixed or to vary the field theory scale keeping $N$ fixed. We also derive an extended first law of entanglement for Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock gravity and show that in these cases all the extra variations reorganize nicely in terms of the central charges of the theory. Finally, we comment on the implications for renormalization group flows and c-theorems in higher dimensions.

Boundary Causality vs Hyperbolicity for Spherical Black Holes in Gauss-Bonnet

We explore the constraints boundary causality places on the allowable Gauss-Bonnet gravitational couplings in asymptotically AdS spaces, specifically considering spherical black hole solutions. We additionally consider the hyperbolicity properties of these solutions, positing that hyperbolicity-violating solutions are sick solutions whose causality properties provide no information about the theory they reside in. For both signs of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling, spherical black holes violate boundary causality at smaller absolute values of the coupling than planar black holes do. For negative coupling, as we tune the Gauss-Bonnet coupling away from zero, both spherical and planar black holes violate hyperbolicity before they violate boundary causality. For positive coupling, the only hyperbolicity-respecting spherical black holes which violate boundary causality do not do so appreciably far from the planar bound. Consequently, eliminating hyperbolicity-violating solutions means the bound on Gauss-Bonnet couplings from the boundary causality of spherical black holes is no tighter than that from planar black holes.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy in Time Dependent Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We study holographic entanglement entropy in Gauss-Bonnet gravity following a global quench. It is known that in dynamical scenarios the entanglement entropy probe penetrates the apparent horizon. The goal of this work is to study how far behind the horizon can the entanglement probe reach in a Gauss-Bonnet theory. We find that the behavior is quite different depending on the sign of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $λ_{GB}$. We show that for $λ_{GB} > 0$ the holographic entanglement entropy probe explores less of the spacetime behind the horizon than in Einstein gravity. On the other hand, for $λ_{GB} < 0$ the results are strikingly different; for early times a new family of solutions appears. These new solutions reach arbitrarily close to the singularity. We calculate the entanglement entropy for the two family of solutions with negative coupling and find that the ones that reach the singularity are the ones of less entropy. Thus, for $λ_{GB} < 0$ the holographic entanglement entropy probes further behind the horizon than in Einstein gravity. In fact, for early times it can explore all the way to the singularity.

Holographic entanglement entropy and the extended phase structure of STU black holes

We study the extended thermodynamics, obtained by considering the cosmological constant as a thermodynamic variable, of STU black holes in 4-dimensions in the fixed charge ensemble. The associated phase structure is conjectured to be dual to an RG-flow on the space of field theories. We find that for some charge configurations the phase structure resembles that of a Van der Waals gas: the system exhibits a family of first order phase transitions ending in a second order phase transition at a critical temperature. We calculate the holographic entanglement entropy for several charge configurations and show that for the cases where the gravity background exhibits Van der Waals behavior, the entanglement entropy presents a transition at the same critical temperature. To further characterize the phase transition we calculate appropriate critical exponents and show that they coincide. Thus, the entanglement entropy successfully captures the information of the extended phase structure. Finally, we discuss the physical interpretation of the extended space in terms of the boundary QFT and construct various holographic heat engines dual to STU black holes.

Weak Field Collapse in AdS: Introducing a Charge Density

We study the effect of a non-vanishing chemical potential on the thermalization time of a strongly coupled large $N_c$ gauge theory in $(2+1)$-dimensions, using a specific bottom-up gravity model in asymptotically AdS space. We first construct a perturbative solution to the gravity-equations, which dynamically interpolates between two AdS black hole backgrounds with different temperatures and chemical potentials, in a perturbative expansion of a bulk neutral scalar field. In the dual field theory, this corresponds to a quench dynamics by a marginal operator, where the corresponding coupling serves as the small parameter in which the perturbation is carried out. The evolution of non-local observables, such as the entanglement entropy, suggests that thermalization time decreases with increasing chemical potential. We also comment on the validity of our perturbative analysis.
