Duality for Delsarte's extremal problem on compact Gelfand pairs

We study Delsarte-type problems for positive definite functions on compact Gelfand pairs as infinite-dimensional linear programming problems. This setup includes, as a particular case, the case of compact Abelian groups. Depending on the restriction on the signs of the functions, we obtain two important particular cases, the Turán and Delsarte problems. These problems have been studied in relation to number theory, sphere packing, and statistics. In this paper, we describe their duals and prove a strong duality statement.

Duality for Delsarte's extremal problem on locally compact Abelian groups

The Delsarte extremal problem for positive definite functions, originally introduced by Delsarte in coding theory to bound the size of error-correcting codes, has since found applications in diverse areas such as sphere packing, Fuglede's spectral set conjecture, and $1$-avoiding sets. Recent developments have established the existence of extremizers in fairly general settings and identified precise linear programming dual formulations, together with strong duality results, in several important cases including finite groups and $\mathbb{R}^d$. In this paper, we consider a generalized Delsarte problem on locally compact Abelian groups, providing a natural framework for harmonic analysis. We extend both the normalization and the objective functional to encompass a wide range of previously studied cases, while avoiding restrictive topological assumptions common in the literature. Within this general setting, we derive the corresponding dual problem and prove a strong duality theorem, thereby unifying and extending earlier results. Naturally, our proof uses harmonic analysis, but the key is a functional analytic approach which distinguishes our proof from existing methods.

On extremal problems of Delsarte type for positive definite functions on LCA groups

A unifying framework for some extremal problems on locally compact Abelian groups is considered, special cases of which include the Delsarte and Turán extremal problems. A slight variation of the extremal problem is introduced and the different formulations are studied for equivalence. Extending previous work, a general result on existence of extremal functions for the new variant is proved under a certain general topological condition.

The pointwise limit of metric integral operators approximating set-valued functions

For set-valued functions (SVFs, multifunctions), mapping a compact interval $[a,b]$ into the space of compact non-empty subsets of ${\mathbb R}^d$, we study approximation based on the metric approach that includes metric linear combinations, metric selections and weighted metric integrals. In our earlier papers we considered convergence of metric Fourier approximations and metric adaptations of some classical integral approximating operators for SVFs of bounded variation with compact graphs. While the pointwise limit of a sequence of these approximants at a point of continuity $x$ of the set-valued function $F$ is $F(x)$, the limit set at a jump point was earlier described in terms of the metric selections of the multifunction. Here we show that, under certain assumptions on $F$, the limit set at $x$ equals the metric average of the left and the right limits of $F$ at $x$, thus extending the case of real-valued functions.

Metric approximation of set-valued functions of bounded variation by integral operators

We introduce an adaptation of integral approximation operators to set-valued functions (SVFs, multifunctions), mapping a compact interval $[a,b]$ into the space of compact non-empty subsets of ${\mathbb R}^d$. All operators are adapted by replacing the Riemann integral for real-valued functions by the weighted metric integral for SVFs of bounded variation with compact graphs. For such a set-valued function $F$, we obtain pointwise error estimates for sequences of integral operators at points of continuity, leading to convergence at such points to $F$. At points of discontinuity of $F$, we derive estimates, which yield the convergence to a set, first described in our previous work on the metric Fourier operator. Our analysis uses recently defined one-sided local quasi-moduli at points of discontinuity and several notions of local Lipschitz property at points of continuity. We also provide a global approach for error bounds. A multifunction $F$ is represented by the set of all its metric selections, while its approximation (its image under the operator) is represented by the set of images of these metric selections under the operator. A bound on the Hausdorff distance between these two sets of single-valued functions in $L^1$ provides our global estimates. The theory is illustrated by presenting the examples of two concrete operators: the Bernstein-Durrmeyer operator and the Kantorovich operator.

Metric Fourier approximation of set-valued functions of bounded variation

We introduce and investigate an adaptation of Fourier series to set-valued functions (multifunctions, SVFs) of bounded variation. In our approach we define an analogue of the partial sums of the Fourier series with the help of the Dirichlet kernel using the newly defined weighted metric integral. We derive error bounds for these approximants. As a consequence, we prove that the sequence of the partial sums converges pointwisely in the Hausdorff metric to the values of the approximated set-valued function at its points of continuity, or to a certain set described in terms of the metric selections of the approximated multifunction at a point of discontinuity. Our error bounds are obtained with the help of the new notions of one-sided local moduli and quasi-moduli of continuity which we discuss more generally for functions with values in metric spaces.
