A non-local singular non-linear Fokker-Planck PDE

The focus of this paper is a non-local singular non-linear Fokker-Planck partial differential equation (PDE). The peculiarity of this PDE feature is in its divergence coefficient, which presents a product between a Besov distribution and a non-linearity. The latter involves the convolution between an integrable kernel K and the solution of the PDE, which leads to a non-locality of the first order term in the PDE. We prove existence and uniqueness of a solution to the PDE as well as continuity results on its coefficients. Previous analytical results are then applied to the study of well-posedness in law for a non-local singular McKean stochastic differential equation. As byproduct of that probabilistic representation, we establish mass conservation and positivity preserving for the PDE.

An Euler scheme for McKean SDEs with Besov drift: convergence rate and implementation

We study a one-dimensional McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equation (SDE) with a drift equal to a product of a distribution depending on the state of the process and a non-linear function depending pointwise on the law density of the solution. Building on recent well-posedness results, we propose the first implementable numerical scheme for this class of SDEs. Our approach combines mollification of the distributional drift with the Euler-Maruyama scheme and a PDE-based approximation of the law via the associated Fokker-Planck equation. We prove strong convergence of the scheme and derive an explicit rate, showing how to balance the smoothing parameter with the time discretisation. Numerical experiments confirm the applicability of our scheme and demonstrate the significant influence of the McKean interaction term on the law of the solution.

Weak Error on the densities for the Euler scheme of stable additive SDEs with Besov drift

We are interested in the Euler-Maruyama dicretization of the formal SDE, $dX_t=b(t,X_t)dt+dZ_t$, where $Z$ is a symmetric isotropic d dimensional stable process of index $\alpha\in (1,2)$, and $b$ is distributional. It belongs to a mix Lebesgue-Besov space. The associated parameters satisfy some constraints which guarantee weak-well posedness. Defining an appropriate Euler scheme, we obtain a convergence rate for the weak error on the densities. The rate depends on the parameters.

McKean-Vlasov equations with singular coefficients - a review of recent results

This paper focuses on recent works on McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equations (SDEs) involving singular coefficients. After recalling the classical framework, we review existing recent literature depending on the type of singularities of the coefficients: on the one hand they satisfy some integrability and measurability conditions only, while on the other hand the drift is allowed to be a generalised function. Different types of dependencies on the law of the unknown and different noises will also be considered. McKean-Vlasov SDEs are closely related to non-linear Fokker-Planck equations that are satisfied by the law (or its density) of the unknown. These connections are often established also in this singular setting and will be reviewed here. Important tools for dealing with singular coefficients are also included in the paper, such as Figalli-Trevisan superposition principle, Zvonkin transformation, Markov marginal uniqueness, and stochastic sewing lemma.

Degenerate McKean-Vlasov equations with drift in anisotropic negative Besov spaces

The paper is concerned with a McKean-Vlasov type SDE with drift in anisotropic Besov spaces with negative regularity and with degenerate diffusion matrix under the weak H{\"o}rmander condition. The main result is of existence and uniqueness of a solution in law for the McKean-Vlasov equation, which is formulated as a suitable martingale problem. All analytical tools needed are derived in the paper, such as the well-posedness of the Fokker-Planck and Kolmogorov PDEs with distributional drift, as well as continuity dependence on the coefficients. The solutions to these PDEs naturally live in anisotropic Besov spaces, for which we developed suitable analytical inequalities, such as Schauder estimates.

Convergence rate of numerical scheme for SDEs with a distributional drift in Besov space

This paper is concerned with numerical solutions of one-dimensional SDEs with the drift being a generalised function, in particular belonging to the H\"older-Zygmund space $C^{-\gamma}$ of negative order $-\gamma<0$ in the spatial variable. We design an Euler-Maruyama numerical scheme and prove its convergence, obtaining an upper bound for the strong $L^1$ convergence rate. We finally implement the scheme and discuss the results obtained.

A pde with drift of negative Besov index and linear growth solutions

This paper investigates a class of PDEs with coefficients in negative Besov spaces and whose solutions have linear growth. We show existence and uniqueness of mild and weak solutions, which are equivalent in this setting, and several continuity results. To this aim, we introduce ad-hoc Besov-H{\"o}lder type spaces that allow for linear growth, and investigate the action of the heat semigroup on them. We conclude the paper by introducing a special subclass of these spaces which has the useful property to be separable.

SDEs with singular coefficients: The martingale problem view and the stochastic dynamics view

We consider SDEs with (distributional) drift in negative Besov spaces and random initial condition and investigate them from two different viewpoints. In the first part we set up a martingale problem and show its well-posedness.We then prove further properties of the martingale problem, like continuity with respect to the drift and the link with the Fokker-Planck equation. We also show that the solutions are weak Dirichlet processes for which we evaluate the quadratic variation of the martingale component. In the second part we identify the dynamics of the solution of the martingale problemby describing the proper associated SDE.Under suitable assumptions we show equivalence with the solution to the martingale problem.

Variational inequalities on unbounded domains for zero-sum singular-controller vs. stopper games

We study a class of zero-sum games between a singular-controller and a stopper over finite-time horizon. The underlying process is a multi-dimensional (locally non-degenerate) controlled stochastic differential equation (SDE) evolving in an unbounded domain. We prove that such games admit a value and provide an optimal strategy for the stopper. The value of the game is shown to be the maximal solution, in a suitable Sobolev class, of a variational inequality of `min-max' type with obstacle constraint and gradient constraint. Although the variational inequality and the game are solved on an unbounded domain we do not require boundedness of either the coefficients of the controlled SDE or of the cost functions in the game.

McKean SDEs with singular coefficients

The paper investigates existence and uniqueness for a stochastic differential equation (SDE) with distributional drift depending on the law density of the solution. Those equations are known as McKean SDEs. The McKean SDE is interpreted in the sense of a suitable singular martingale problem. A key tool used in the investigation is the study of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation.

Blow-up for a nonlinear PDE with fractional Laplacian and singular quadratic nonlinearity

We consider a parabolic-type PDE with a diffusion given by a fractional Laplacian operator and with a quadratic nonlinearity of the 'gradient' of the solution, convoluted with a singular term b. Our first result is the well-posedness for this problem: We show existence and uniqueness of a (local in time) mild solution. The main result is about blow-up of said solution, and in particular we find sufficient conditions on the initial datum and on the term b to ensure blow-up of the solution in finite time.

A numerical scheme for stochastic differential equations with distributional drift

In this paper we present a scheme for the numerical solution of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations (SDEs) whose drift belongs to a fractional Sobolev space of negative regularity (a subspace of Schwartz distributions). We obtain a rate of convergence in a suitable $L^1$-norm and we implement the scheme numerically. To the best of our knowledge this is the first paper to study (and implement) numerical solutions of SDEs whose drift lives in a space of distributions. As a byproduct we also obtain an estimate of the convergence rate for a numerical scheme applied to SDEs with drift in $L^p$-spaces with $p\in(1,\infty)$.

A non-linear parabolic PDE with a distributional coefficient and its applications to stochastic analysis

We consider a non-linear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) on $\mathbb R^d$ with a distributional coefficient in the non-linear term. The distribution is an element of a Besov space with negative regularity and the non-linearity is of quadratic type in the gradient of the unknown. Under suitable conditions on the parameters we prove local existence and uniqueness of a mild solution to the PDE, and investigate properties like continuity with respect to the initial condition and blow-up times. We prove a global existence and uniqueness result assuming further properties on the non-linearity. To conclude we consider an application of the PDE to stochastic analysis, in particular to a class of non-linear backward stochastic differential equations with distributional drivers.

Fractional Brownian motions ruled by nonlinear equations

In this note we consider generalized diffusion equations in which the diffusivity coefficient is not necessarily constant in time, but instead it solves a nonlinear fractional differential equation involving fractional Riemann-Liouville time-derivative. Our main contribution is to highlight the link between these generalised equations and fractional Brownian motion (fBm). In particular, we investigate the governing equation of fBm and show that its diffusion coefficient must satisfy an additive evolutive fractional equation. We derive in a similar way the governing equation of the iterated fractional Brownian motion.

On the Estimation of Entropy in the FastICA Algorithm

The fastICA method is a popular dimension reduction technique used to reveal patterns in data. Here we show both theoretically and in practice that the approximations used in fastICA can result in patterns not being successfully recognised. We demonstrate this problem using a two-dimensional example where a clear structure is immediately visible to the naked eye, but where the projection chosen by fastICA fails to reveal this structure. This implies that care is needed when applying fastICA. We discuss how the problem arises and how it is intrinsically connected to the approximations that form the basis of the computational efficiency of fastICA.

A Feynman-Kac result via Markov BSDEs with generalized driver

In this paper we investigate BSDEs where the driver contains a distributional term (in the sense of generalised functions) and derive general Feynman-Kac formulae related to these BSDEs. We introduce an integral operator to give sense to the equation and then we show the existence of a strong solution employing results on a related PDE.Due to the irregularity of the driver, the $Y$-component of a couple $(Y,Z)$ solving the BSDE is not necessarily a semimartingale but a weak Dirichlet process.

Forward-backward SDEs with distributional coefficients

Forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) have attracted significant attention since they were introduced almost 30 years ago, due to their wide range of applications, from solving non-linear PDEs to pricing American-type options. Here, we consider two new classes of multidimensional FBSDEs with distributional coefficients (elements of a Sobolev space with negative order). We introduce a suitable notion of a solution, show existence and uniqueness of a strong solution of the first FBSDE, and weak existence for the second. We establish a link with PDE theory via a nonlinear Feynman-Kac representation formula. The associated semi-linear second order parabolic PDE is the same for both FBSDEs, also involves distributional coefficients and has not previously been investigated; our analysis uses mild solutions, Sobolev spaces and semigroup theory.

Regularity of the solutions to SPDEs in metric measure spaces

In this paper we study the regularity of non-linear parabolic PDEs and stochastic PDEs on metric measure spaces admitting heat kernels. In particular we consider mild function solutions to abstract Cauchy problems and show that the unique solution is Hölder continuous in time with values in a suitable fractional Sobolev space. As this analysis is done via a-priori estimates, we can apply this result to stochastic PDEs on metric measure spaces and solve the equation in a pathwise sense for almost all paths. The main example of noise term is of fractional Brownian type and the metric measure spaces can be classical as well as given by various fractal structures. The whole approach is low dimensional and works for spectral dimensions less than 4.
