Optimization methods for very accurate Digital Breast Tomosynthesis image reconstruction

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis is an X-ray imaging technique that allows a volumetric reconstruction of the breast, from a small number of low-dose two-dimensional projections. Although it is already used in clinical setting, enhancing the quality of the recovered images is still a subject of research. Aim of this paper is to propose, in a general optimization framework, very accurate iterative algorithms for Digital Breast Tomosynthesis image reconstruction, characterized by a convergent behaviour. They are able to detect the cancer object of interest, i.e. masses and microcalcifications, in the early iterations and to enhance the image quality in a prolonged execution. The suggested model-based implementations are specifically aligned to Digital Breast Tomosynthesis clinical requirements and take advantage of a Total Variation regularizer. We also tune a fully-automatic strategy to set a proper regularization parameter. We assess our proposals on real data, acquired from a breast accreditation phantom and a clinical case. The results confirm the effectiveness of the presented solutions in reconstructing breast volumes with particular focus on the masses and microcalcifications.

Preliminary analysis of COVID-19 spread in Italy with an adaptive SEIRD model

In this paper we propose a Susceptible-Infected-Exposed-Recovered-Dead (SEIRD) differential model for the analysis and forecast of the COVID-19 spread in some regions of Italy, using the data from the Italian Protezione Civile from February 24th 2020. In this study investigate an adaptation of the model. Since several restricting measures have been imposed by the Italian government at different times, starting from March 8th 2020, we propose a modification of SEIRD by introducing a time dependent transmitting rate. In the numerical results we report the maximum infection spread for the three Italian regions firstly affected by the COVID-19 outbreak(Lombardia, Veneto and Emilia Romagna). This approach will be successively extended to other Italian regions, as soon as more data will be available.

A fast nonconvex Compressed Sensing algorithm for highly low-sampled MR images reconstruction

In this paper we present a fast and efficient method for the reconstruction of Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) from severely under-sampled data. From the Compressed Sensing theory we have mathematically modeled the problem as a constrained minimization problem with a family of non-convex regularizing objective functions depending on a parameter and a least squares data fit constraint. We propose a fast and efficient algorithm, named Fast NonConvex Reweighting (FNCR) algorithm, based on an iterative scheme where the non-convex problem is approximated by its convex linearization and the penalization parameter is automatically updated. The convex problem is solved by a Forward-Backward procedure, where the Backward step is performed by a Split Bregman strategy. Moreover, we propose a new efficient iterative solver for the arising linear systems. We prove the convergence of the proposed FNCR method. The results on synthetic phantoms and real images show that the algorithm is very well performing and computationally efficient, even when compared to the best performing methods proposed in the literature.
