Quantitative estimates for the relative isoperimetric problem and its gradient flow outside convex bodies in the plane

We prove three related quantitative results for the relative isoperimetric problem outside a convex body $Ω$ in the plane: (1) Łojasiewicz estimates and quantitative rigidity for critical points, (2) rates of convergence for the gradient flow, and (3) quantitative stability for minimizers. These results come with explicit constants and optimal exponents/rates, and hold whenever a simple two-dimensional auxiliary variational problem for circular arcs outside of $Ω$ is nondegenerate. The proofs are inter-related, and in particular, for the first time in the context of isoperimetric problems, a flow approach is used to prove quantitative stability for minimizers.

The Willmore Energy Landscape of Spheres and Avoidable Singularities of the Willmore Flow

We study the sublevel sets of the Willmore energy on the space of smoothly immersed $ 2 $-spheres in Euclidean $ 3 $-space. We show that the subset of immersions with energy at most $ 12π$ consists of four regular homotopy classes. Moreover, we show that in certain regular homotopy classes, all singularities of the Willmore flow are avoidable, that is, the initial surface admits a regular homotopy to a round sphere whose Willmore energy does not exceed that of the initial surface. This yields a classification of initial surfaces with energy at most $ 12π$ that lead to unavoidable singularities. As a further consequence, we obtain an extension of the Li-Yau inequality at $ 12π$ for a large class of immersed spheres without triple points. To prove these results, we glue together different instances of the Willmore flow and employ an invariant for triple-point-free immersed spheres.

The Injectivity Radius of Souls of Alexandrov Spaces

A sharp lower bound for the injectivity radius in noncompact nonnegatively curved Riemannian manifolds involving their soul goes back to Šarafutdinov. We generalize this bound to the setting of Alexandrov spaces. Our main theorem reads as follows. If the injectivity radius of an Alexandrov space of nonnegative curvature does not coincide with the one of its souls, then it is at least $ πK^{-1/2} $, where $ K $ is an upper curvature bound. We introduce the soul of Alexandrov spaces in some detail and compare two notions of injectivity radii.

Geometry of complete minimal surfaces at infinity and the Willmore index of their inversions

We study complete minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with finite total curvature and embedded planar ends. After conformal compactification via inversion, these yield examples of surfaces stationary for the Willmore bending energy $\mathcal{W}: =\frac{1}{4} \int|\vec H|^2$. In codimension one, we prove that the $\mathcal{W}$-Morse index for any inverted minimal sphere or real projective plane with $m$ such ends is exactly $m-3=\frac{\mathcal{W}}{4π}-3$. We also consider several geometric properties -- for example, the property that all $m$ asymptotic planes meet at a single point -- of these minimal surfaces and explore their relation to the $\mathcal{W}$-Morse index of their inverted surfaces.

Nonlocal estimates for the Volume Preserving Mean Curvature Flow and applications

We obtain estimates on nonlocal quantities appearing in the Volume Preserving Mean Curvature Flow (VPMCF) in the closed, Euclidean setting. As a result we demonstrate that blowups of finite time singularities of VPMCF are ancient solutions to Mean Curvature Flow (MCF), prove that monotonicity methods may always be applied at finite times and obtain information on the asymptotics of the flow.

A note on Alexandrov immersed mean curvature flow

We demonstrate that the property of being Alexandrov immersed is preserved along mean curvature flow. Furthermore, we demonstrate that mean curvature flow techniques for mean convex embedded flows such as noncollapsing and gradient estimates also hold in this setting. We also indicate the necessary modifications to the work of Brendle--Huisken to allow for mean curvature flow with surgery for the Alexandrov immersed, $2$-dimensional setting.

A posteriori error estimates for wave maps into spheres

We provide a posteriori error estimates in the energy norm for temporal semi-discretisations of wave maps into spheres that are based on the angular momentum formulation. Our analysis is based on novel weak-strong stability estimates which we combine with suitable reconstructions of the numerical solution. We present time-adaptive numerical simulations based on the a posteriori error estimators for solutions involving blow-up.

On the Index of Willmore spheres

We consider unbranched Willmore surfaces in the Euclidean space that arise as inverted complete minimal surfaces with embedded planar ends. Several statements are proven about upper and lower bounds on the Morse Index - the number of linearly independent variational directions that locally decrease the Willmore energy. We in particular compute the Index of a Willmore sphere in the three-space. This Index is $m-d$, where $m$ is the number of ends of the corresponding complete minimal surface and $d$ is the dimension of the span of the normals at the $m$-fold point. The dimension $d$ is either two or three. For $m=4$ we prove that $d=3$. In general, we show that there is a strong connection of the Morse Index to the number of logarithmically growing Jacobi fields on the corresponding minimal surface.

Singularities of the area preserving curve shortening flow with a Neumann free boundary condition

We consider the area preserving curve shortening flow with Neumann free boundary conditions outside of a convex domain or at a straight line. We give a criterion on initial curves that guarantees the appearance of a singularity in finite time. We prove that the singularity is of type II. Furthermore, if these initial curves are convex, then an appropriate rescaling at the finite maximal time of existence yields a grim reaper or half a grim reaper as limit flow. We construct examples of initial curves satisfying the mentioned criterion.

Existence of minimizing Willmore Klein bottles in Euclidean four-space

Let $K$ be a Klein bottle. We show that the infimum of the Willmore energy among all immersed Klein bottles in Euclidean $n$-space is attained by a smooth embedded Klein bottle, where $n\geq 4$. There are three distinct regular homotopy classes of immersed Klein bottles in the Euclidean four-space each one containing an embedding. One is characterized by the property that it contains the minimizer just mentioned. For the other two regular homotopy classes we show that the Willmore energy is bounded from below by $8π$. We give a classification of the minimizers of these two classes. In particular, we prove the existence of infinitely many distinct embedded Klein bottles in Euclidean four-space that have Euler normal number $-4$ or $+4$ and Willmore energy $8π$. The surfaces are distinct even when we allow conformal transformations of the ambient space. As they are all minimizers in their homotopy class they are Willmore surfaces.

The area preserving curve shortening flow with Neumann free boundary conditions

We study the area preserving curve shortening flow with Neumann free boundary conditions outside of a convex domain in the Euclidean plane. Under certain conditions on the initial curve the flow does not develop any singularity, and it subconverges smoothly to an arc of a circle sitting outside of the given fixed domain and enclosing the same area as the initial curve.
