Optical free space extreme learning machine for the implementation of emergent complex systems

Cellular automata conform a set of computational models which evolve with a reduced set of simple rules, yet still are able to show extremely complex emergent phenomena such as fractals and universal computation. Despite their apparent simplicity, they have shown great potential in simulating natural systems and solving challenging computational tasks such as classification and image generation. Instead of implementing cellular automata purely at the software level, it is desirable to design novel analog computing platforms that physically evolve following the automata's underlying rules, thereby reducing power requirements and latency. Here, we introduce an optical extreme learning machine for the simulation of a wide range of cellular automata. Our system operates in free space, and uses a spatial light modulator to encode the evolution rules of the system, while coherent wave propagation performs the corresponding computations. Our results demonstrate a simple, fully-programmable, cost and power efficient, and easy to build and align platform for the implementation of a wide range of complex computational systems such as elementary cellular automata, Conway's Game of Life, and two-dimensional Turing machines.

New measurements on water ice photodesorption and product formation under ultraviolet irradiation

The photodesorption of icy grain mantles has been claimed to be responsible for the abundance of gas-phase molecules toward cold regions. Being water a ubiquitous molecule, it is crucial to understand its role in photochemistry and its behavior under an ultraviolet field. We report new measurements on the UV-photodesorption of water ice and its H$_2$, OH, and O$_2$ photoproducts using a calibrated quadrupole mass spectrometer. Solid water was deposited under ultra-high-vacuum conditions and then UV-irradiated at various temperatures starting from 8 K with a microwave discharged hydrogen lamp. Deuterated water was used for confirmation of the results. We found a photodesorption yield of 1.3 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ molecules per incident photon for water, and 0.7 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ molecules per incident photon for deuterated water at the lowest irradiation temperature, 8 K. The photodesorption yield per absorbed photon is given and comparison with astrophysical scenarios, where water ice photodesorption could account for the presence of gas-phase water toward cold regions in the absence of a thermal desorption process is addressed.

Observation of crystallization slowdown in supercooled para-hydrogen and ortho-deuterium quantum liquid mixtures

We report a quantitative experimental study of the crystallization kinetics of supercooled quantum liquid mixtures of para-hydrogen (pH$_2$) and ortho-deuterium (oD$_2$) by high spatial resolution Raman spectroscopy of liquid microjets. We show that in a wide range of compositions the crystallization rate of the isotopic mixtures is significantly reduced with respect to that of the pure substances. To clarify this behavior we have performed path-integral simulations of the non-equilibrium pH$_2$-oD$_2$ liquid mixtures, revealing that differences in quantum delocalization between the two isotopic species translate into different effective particle sizes. Our results provide first experimental evidence for crystallization slowdown of quantum origin, offering a benchmark for theoretical studies of quantum behavior in supercooled liquids.
