A look at generalized trigonometric functions as functions of their two parameters and further new properties

Investigation of the generalized trigonometric and hyperbolic functions containing two parameters has been a very active research area over the last decade. We believe, however, that their monotonicity and convexity properties with respect to parameters have not been thoroughly studied. In this paper, we make an attempt to fill this gap. Our results are not complete; for some functions, we manage to establish (log)-convexity/concavity in parameters, while for others, we only managed the prove monotonicity, in which case we present necessary and sufficient conditions for convexity/concavity. In the course of the investigation, we found two hypergeometric representations for the generalized cosine and hyperbolic cosine functions which appear to be new. In the last section of the paper, we present four explicit integral evaluations of combinations of generalized trigonometric/hyperbolic functions in terms of hypergeometric functions.

Hypergeometric ${}_4F_3(1)$ with integral parameter differences

In this paper we continue investigation of the hypergeometric function ${}_4F_3(1)$ as the function of its seven parameters. We deduce several reduction formulas for this function under additional conditions that one of the top parameters exceeds one of the bottom parameters by a positive integer or reversely one of the bottom parameters exceeds one of the top parameters by a positive integer or both. We show that all such cases reduce to the case of the unit parameter difference. The latter case, in turn, can be expressed in terms of certain linear combination of two series involving the logarithmic derivative of the gamma function.

Optimal discrete Neumann energy in a ball and a circular ring

In this paper, we prove some exact estimates for the discrete Neumann energy of a ball and a circular ring in Euclidean space for points located on circles. The proofs are based on dissymmetrization and analysis of the asymptotic behavior of the Dirichlet integral of the potential function.

Hypergeometric Functions at Unit Argument: Simple Derivation of Old and New Identities

The main goal of this paper is to derive a number of identities for the generalized hypergeometric function evaluated at unity and for certain terminating multivariate hypergeometric functions from the symmetries and other properties of Meijer's $G$ function. For instance, we recover two- and three-term Thomae relations for ${}_3F_2$, give two- and three-term transformations for ${}_4F_3$ with one unit shift and ${}_5F_4$ with two unit shifts in the parameters, establish multi-term identities for general ${}_{p}F_{p-1}$ and several transformations for terminating Kampé de Fériet and Srivastava $F^{(3)}$ functions. We further present a presumably new formula for analytic continuation of ${}_pF_{p-1}(1)$ in parameters and reveal somewhat unexpected connections between the generalized hypergeometric functions and the generalized and ordinary Bernoulli polynomials. Finally, we exploit some recent duality relations for the generalized hypergeometric and $q$-hypergeometric functions to derive multi-term relations for terminating series.

Transformations of the hypergeometric 4F3 with one unit shift: a group theoretic study

We study the group of transformations of 4F3 hypergeometric functions evaluated at unity with one unit shift in parameters. We reveal the general form of this family of transformations and its group property. Next, we use explicitly known transformations to generate a subgroup whose structure is then thoroughly studied. Using some known results for 3F2 transformation groups, we show that this subgroup is isomorphic to the direct product of the symmetric group of degree 5 and 5-dimensional integer lattice. We investigate the relation between two-term 4F3 transformations from our group and three-term 3F2 transformations and present a method for computing the coefficients of the contiguous relations for 3F2 functions evaluated at unity. We further furnish a class of summation formulas associated with the elements of our group. In the appendix to this paper, we give a collection of Wolfram Mathematica routines facilitating the group calculations.

The Fox-Wright function near the singularity and branch cut

The Fox-Wright function is a further extension of the generalized hypergeometric function obtained by introducing arbitrary positive scaling factors into the arguments of the gamma functions in the summand. Its importance comes mostly from its role in fractional calculus although other interesting applications also exist. If the sums of the scaling factors in the top and bottom parameters are equal, the series defining the Fox-Wright function has a finite non-zero radius of convergence. It was demonstrated by Braaksma in 1964 that the Fox-Wright function can then be extended to a holomorphic function in the complex plane cut along a ray from the positive point on the boundary of the disk of convergence to the point at infinity. In this paper we study the behavior of the Fox-Wright function in the neighborhood of this positive singular point. Under certain restrictions we give a convergent expansion with recursively computed coefficients completely characterizing this behavior. We further compute the jump and the average value of the Fox-Wright function on the banks of the branch cut.

Hypergeometric Differential Equation and New Identities for the Coefficients of Nørlund and Bühring

The fundamental set of solutions of the generalized hypergeometric differential equation in the neighborhood of unity has been built by Nørlund in 1955. The behavior of the generalized hypergeometric function in the neighborhood of unity has been described in the beginning of 1990s by Bühring, Srivastava and Saigo. In the first part of this paper we review their results rewriting them in terms of Meijer's $G$-function and explaining the interconnections between them. In the second part we present new formulas and identities for the coefficients that appear in the expansions of Meijer's $G$-function and generalized hypergeometric function around unity. Particular cases of these identities include known and new relations for Thomae's hypergeometric function and forgotten Hermite's identity for the sine function.

Extremal decomposition problems for p-harmonic radius

We extend classical results by Lavrent'ev and Kufarev concerning the product of the conformal radii of planar non-overlapping domains. We also extend relatively recent results for the case of domains in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space, $n \geq 3$, with conformal radii replaced by harmonic ones. Namely, we get analogues of these results in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space in terms of $p$-harmonic radius. The proofs are based on technique of modulii of curve families and dissymmetrization of such families.

Extremal decomposition problems in the Euclidean space

Composition principles for reduced moduli are extended to the case of domains in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space, $n>2$. As a consequence analogues of extremal decomposition theorems of Kufarev, Dubinin and Kirillova in the planer case are obtained.

Completely monotonic gamma ratio and infinitely divisible H-function of Fox

We investigate conditions for logarithmic complete monotonicity of a quotient of two products of gamma functions, where the argument of each gamma function has different scaling factor. We give necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of nonnegativity of some elementary function and more practical sufficient conditions in terms of parameters. Further, we study the representing measure in Bernstein's theorem for both equal and non-equal scaling factors. This leads to conditions on parameters under which Meijer's $G$-function or Fox's $H$-function represents an infinitely divisible probability distribution on positive half-line. Moreover, we present new integral equations for both $G$-function and $H$-function. The results of the paper generalize those due to Ismail (with Bustoz, Muldoon and Grinshpan) and Alzer who considered previously the case of unit scaling factors.

Generalized Stieltjes transforms: basic aspects

The paper surveys the basic properties of generalized Stieltjes functions including some new ones. We introduce the notion of the exact Stieltjes order and give a criterion of exactness, simple sufficient conditions and some prototypical examples. The paper includes an appendix, where we define the left sided Riemann-Liouville and the right sided Kober-Erdelyi fractional integrals of measures supported on half axis and give inversion formulas for them.

Hypergeometric functions as generalized Stieltjes transforms

In this paper we apply generalized Stieltjes transform representation to study the generalized hypergeometric function. Among the results thus proved are new integral representations, inequalities, properties of the Padé table and the properties of the generalized hypergeometric function as a conformal map.
