Assessment of PLATO Science Performance

The PLATO mission is scheduled for launch early 2027. In this paper we present an overview of the performance drivers for the mission at the time where all flight models of the cameras have been tested and integrated on the optical bench. The PLATO consortium needs an estimate of the planet detection yield to dimension the ground-based radial velocity follow-up resources. We provide updated estimates on the yield of planet detections that can be expected from the mission under certain assumptions. As of today, large uncertainties remain on the planet occurrence rates, especially for small planets in long-period orbits, and on our ability to detect these planets in the presence of stellar variability and instrumental noise. To partially overcome these limitations, we compare results using different planet occurrence rates, detectability rates, and we include an estimate on the expected contribution of stellar variability to the noise budget. The final detection yield of PLATO will provide constraints to planet occurrence rates which in turn will help constraining planet formation models.

Preparing the NIRSpec/JWST science data calibration: from ground testing to sky

The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of four instruments aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRSpec is developed by ESA with AIRBUS Defence & Space as prime contractor. The calibration of its various observing modes is a fundamental step to achieve the mission science goals and provide users with the best quality data from early on in the mission. Extensive testing of NIRSpec on the ground, aided by a detailed model of the instrument, allow us to derive initial corrections for the foreseeable calibrations. We present a snapshot of the current calibration scheme that will be revisited once JWST is in orbit.

A newly-discovered young massive star cluster at the end of the Galactic Bar

We present a near-infrared study of the candidate star cluster Mercer 81, located at the centre of the G338.4+0.1 HII region, and close to the TeV gamma-ray source HESS 1640-465. Using HST/NICMOS imaging and VLT/ISAAC spectroscopy we have detected a compact and highly extincted cluster of stars, though the bright stars in the centre of the field are in fact foreground objects. The cluster contains nine stars with strong Paschen-alpha emission, one of which we identify as a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star, as well as an A-type supergiant. The line-of-sight extinction is very large, $A_{V}\sim 45$, illustrating the challenges of locating young star clusters in the Galactic Plane. From a quantitative analysis of the WR star we argue for a cluster age of 3.7$^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$\,Myr, and, assuming that all emission-line stars are WRs, a cluster mass of $\ga 10^4$\msun. A kinematic analysis of the cluster's surrounding HII-region shows that the cluster is located in the Galactic disk at a distance of 11$\pm$2\,kpc. This places the cluster close to where the far end of the Bar intersects the Norma spiral arm. This cluster, as well as the nearby cluster [DBS2003]179, represent the first detections of active star cluster formation at this side of the Bar, in contrast to the near side which is well known to have recently undergone a $\sim 10^6$\msun\ starburst episode.

The Intermediate-mass Young Stellar Object 08576nr292: Discovery of a disk-jet system

We present observations of the embedded massive young stellar object (YSO) candidate 08576nr292, obtained with X-shooter and SINFONI on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The flux-calibrated, medium-resolution X-shooter spectrum (300 - 2500 nm) includes over 300 emission lines, but no (photospheric) absorption lines and is consistent with a reddened disk spectrum. Among the emission lines are three hydrogen series and helium lines, both permitted and forbidden metal lines, and CO first-overtone emission. A representative sample of lines with different morphologies is presented. The H alpha and Ca II triplet lines are very strong, with profiles indicative of outflow and - possibly - infall, usually observed in accreting stars. These lines include a blue-shifted absorption component at ~ -125 km/s. The He I and metal-line profiles are double-peaked, with a likely origin in a circumstellar disk. The forbidden lines, associated with outflow, have a single blue-shifted emission component centered at -125 km/s, coinciding with the absorption components in H alpha and Ca II. SINFONI H- and K-band integral-field spectroscopy of the cluster environment demonstrates that the [Fe II] emission is produced by a jet originating at the location of 08576nr292. Because the spectral type of the central object cannot be determined, its mass remains uncertain. We argue that 08576nr292 is an intermediate-mass YSO with a high accretion rate Mdot_acc ~ 10^-5 - 10^-6 Msun/yr. These observations demonstrate the potential of X-shooter and SINFONI to study in great detail an accretion disk-jet system, rarely seen around the more massive YSOs.

Near-IR observations of UCHII regions

We present adaptive-optics (AO) assisted J, H and K/K' images of 8 UCHII regions taken with the ALFA and ADONIS AO systems at Calar Alto and La Silla observatories. The images show details of the stellar population and the near-IR morphology of UCHIIs with unprecedented resolution. We have searched for the ionizing sources of the regions using near-IR photometry. The spectral type of the ionizing and most luminous stars inferred from our photometry has been compared with spectral type estimates from IRAS and published radio-continuum measurements. We find that the photometric near-IR spectral types are earlier than estimates from radio and IRAS data. This difference is alleviated when stellar spherical models including line blanketing and stellar winds instead of non-LTE plane-parallel models are used to derive the radio- and IRAS-based spectral types. We also made an attempt to correlate the properties of the near-IR ionizing population with MSX data and published CS measurements. No correlation was found. We note that in two of the regions (G309.92+0.48 and G61.48+0.09B1), the best candidate to ionize the region is possibly a super-giant.

GLITP Optical Monitoring of QSO 0957+561: VR Light Curves and Variability

The GLITP collaboration observed the first gravitational lens system (QSO 0957+561) from 2000 February 3 to 2000 March 31. The daily VR observations were made with the 2.56-m Nordic Optical Telescope at Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, La Palma (Spain). We have derived detailed and robust VR light curves of the two components Q0957+561A and Q0957+561B. In spite of the excellent sampling rate, we have not found evidence in favor of true daily variability. With respect to variability on time-scales of several weeks, we measure VR gradients of about -0.8 mmag/day in Q0957+561A and + 0.3 mmag/day in Q0957+561B. The gradients are very probably originated in the far source, thus adopting this reasonable hypothesis (intrinsic variability), we compare them to the expected gradients during the evolution of a compact supernova remnant at the redshift of the source quasar. The starburst scenario is roughly consistent with some former events, but the new gradients do not seem to be caused by supernova remnant activity.
