Metastability for the Curie-Weiss-Potts model with unbounded random interactions

We analyse the metastable behaviour of the disordered Curie--Weiss--Potts (DCWP) model subject to a Glauber dynamics. The model is a randomly disordered version of the mean-field $q$-spin Potts model (CWP), where the interaction coefficients between spins are general independent random variables. These random variables are chosen to have fixed mean (for simplicity taken to be $1$) and well defined cumulant generating function, with a fixed distribution not depending on the number of particles. The system evolves as a discrete-time Markov chain with single spin flip Metropolis dynamics at finite inverse temperature $β$. We provide a comparison of the metastable behaviour of the CWP and DCWP models, when $N \to \infty$. First, we establish the metastability of the CWP model and, using this result, prove metastability for the DCWP model (with high probability). We then determine the ratio between the metastable transition time for the DCWP model and the corresponding time for the CWP model. Specifically, we derive the asymptotic tail behavior and moments of this ratio. Our proof combines the potential-theoretic approach to metastability with concentration of measure techniques, the latter adapted to our specific context.

The Widom-Rowlinson model: Mesoscopic fluctuations for the critical droplet

We study the critical droplet for a close-to-equilibrium Widom-Rowlinson model of interacting particles, represented by disks of radius $1$, in the two-dimensional plane at low temperature. The critical droplet is the set of macroscopic states that correspond to saddle points for the passage from a low-density supersaturated vapour to a stable high-density liquid. We analyse the mesoscopic fluctuations of the surface of the critical droplet, which turns out to be the set of particle configurations that are close to a disk of a certain deterministic radius. Our results represent the first detailed rigorous analysis of the surface fluctuations of a continuum interacting particle system exhibiting condensation and, as such, constitute a fundamental step in the study of phase separation from the perspective of stochastic geometry. At the same time, our results serve as a basis for the study of a non-equilibrium version of the Widom-Rowlinson model, to be analysed elsewhere, where they lead to a correction term in the Arrhenius formula for the average vapour-liquid crossover time.

Hydrodynamic limit and large deviations for run-and-tumble particles with mean-field switching rates

In this paper, we study run-and-tumble particles moving on two copies of the discrete torus (referred to as layers), where the switching rate between layers depends on a mean-field interaction among the particles. We derive the hydrodynamic limit of this model, as well as the large deviations from the hydrodynamic limit. Our main tool is the introduction of a weakly perturbed version of the system, whose hydrodynamic equations precisely characterize the trajectories associated with large deviations.

Metastability of Glauber dynamics with inhomogeneous coupling disorder

We introduce a general class of mean-field-like spin systems with random couplings that comprises both the Ising model on inhomogeneous dense random graphs and the randomly diluted Hopfield model. We are interested in quantitative estimates of metastability in large volumes at fixed temperatures when these systems evolve according to a Glauber dynamics, i.e.\ where spins flip with Metropolis transition probabilities at inverse temperature $β$. We identify conditions ensuring that with high probability the system behaves like the corresponding system where the random couplings are replaced by their averages. More precisely, we prove that the metastability of the former system is implied with high probability by the metastability of the latter. Moreover, we consider relevant metastable hitting times of the two systems and find the asymptotic tail behaviour and the moments of their ratio. This work provides an extension of the results known for the Ising model on the Erdős--R{é}nyi random graph. The proofs use the potential-theoretic approach to metastability in combination with concentration inequalities.

Metastability for the dilute Curie-Weiss model with Glauber dynamics

We analyse the metastable behaviour of the dilute Curie-Weiss model subject to a Glauber dynamics. The model is a random version of a mean-field Ising model, where the coupling coefficients are Bernoulli random variables with mean $p\in (0,1)$. This model can be also viewed as an Ising model on the Erdős-Rényi random graph with edge probability $p$. The system is a Markov chain where spins flip according to a Metropolis dynamics at inverse temperature $β$. We compute the average time the system takes to reach the stable phase when it starts from a certain probability distribution on the metastable state (called the last-exit biased distribution), in the regime where $N\to\infty$, $β>β_c=1$ and $h$ is positive and small enough. We obtain asymptotic bounds on the probability of the event that the mean metastable hitting time is approximated by that of the Curie-Weiss model. The proof uses the potential theoretic approach to metastability and concentration of measure inequalities.

Phase transitions and coarse-graining for a system of particles in the continuum

We revisit the proof of the liquid-vapor phase transition for systems with finite-range interaction by Lebowitz, Mazel and Presutti and extend it to the case where we additionally include a hard-core interaction to the Hamiltonian. We establish the phase transition for the mean field limit and then we also prove it when the interaction range is long but finite, by perturbing around the mean-field theory. A key step in this procedure is the construction of a density (coarse-grained) model via cluster expansion. In this note we present the overall result but we mainly focus on this last issue.

Finite volume corrections and decay of correlations in the canonical ensemble

We consider a classical system of $N$ particles confined in a box $Λ\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ interacting via a finite range pair potential. Given the validity of the cluster expansion in the canonical ensemble we compute the error between the finite and the infinite volume free energy and estimate it to be bounded by the area of the surface of the box's boundary over its volume. We also compute the truncated two-point correlation function and find that the contribution from the ideal gas case is of the order $1/N$ while the contribution of the interactions is of the order $1/|Λ|$ plus an exponentially small error with the distance.

Cluster expansion in the canonical ensemble

We consider a system of particles confined in a box $\La\subset\R^d$ interacting via a tempered and stable pair potential. We prove the validity of the cluster expansion for the canonical partition function in the high temperature - low density regime. The convergence is uniform in the volume and in the thermodynamic limit it reproduces Mayer's virial expansion providing an alternative and more direct derivation which avoids the deep combinatorial issues present in the original proof.
