Unstable Interface Dynamics for Gravity Stokes Flow

We investigate some unstable behavior of the interface given by two incompressible fluids of different densities evolving by the regular Stokes law with gravity force. In the unstable scenario, where the denser fluid lies above the lighter fluid, we prove infinite-in-time growth of the length or the curvature of the interface. We support these analytical results with numerical simulations that confirm the predicted growth phenomena. In the stable configuration, where the denser fluid lies below the lighter fluid, we show that certain initial configurations evolve into the unstable regime in finite time.

Bounds on the Aspect Ratio of the Momentum Support of a 2D Collisionless Plasma

The relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system is a kinetic model for collisionless plasmas. For the two-dimensional model, global well-posedness of this model is known and was proven by deriving global bounds on the momentum support of the particle density function. In this paper, we prove bounds on the magnitude of the momentum support in one direction depending on the magnitude of the support in the corresponding orthogonal direction.

On the global well-posedness of interface dynamics for gravity Stokes flow

In this paper we establish the global-in-time well-posedness for an arbitrary $C^{1+γ}$, $0<γ<1$, initial internal wave for the free boundary gravity Stokes system in two dimensions. This classical well-posedness result is complemented with a weak solvability result in the case of $C^γ$ or Lipschitz interfaces. Furthermore, we also propose and study several one-dimensional models that capture different features of the full internal wave problem for the gravity Stokes system and show that all of them present finite time singularities. This fact evidences the fine structure of the non-linearity in the full system that allows for the free boundary problem to be globally well-posed while simplifications of it blow-up in finite time.

Well-posedness of the Kolmogorov two-equation model of turbulence in optimal Sobolev spaces

In this paper, we study the well-posedness of the Kolmogorov two-equation model of turbulence in a periodic domain $\mathbb{T}^d$, for space dimensions $d=2,3$. We admit the average turbulent kinetic energy $k$ to vanish in part of the domain, \textsl{i.e.} we consider the case $k \geq 0$; in this situation, the parabolic structure of the equations becomes degenerate. For this system, we prove a local well-posedness result in Sobolev spaces $H^s$, for any $s>1+d/2$. We expect this regularity to be optimal, due to the degeneracy of the system when $k \approx 0$. We also prove a continuation criterion and provide a lower bound for the lifespan of the solutions. The proof of the results is based on Littlewood-Paley analysis and paradifferential calculus on the torus, together with a precise commutator decomposition of the non-linear terms involved in the computations.

Long time interface dynamics for gravity Stokes flow

We study the dynamics of the interface given by two incompressible viscous fluids in the Stokes regime filling a 2D horizontally periodic strip. The fluids are subject to the gravity force and the density difference induces the dynamics of the interface. We derive the contour dynamics formulation for this problem through a $x_1$-periodic version of the Stokeslet. Using this new system, we show local-in-time well-posedness when the initial interface is described by a curve with no self-intersections and $C^{1+γ}$ Hölder regularity, $0<γ<1$. This well-posedness result holds regardless of the Rayleigh-Taylor stability of the physical system. In addition, global-in-time existence and decay to the flat stationary state is proved in the Rayleigh-Taylor stable regime for small initial data. Finally, in the Rayleigh-Taylor unstable regime, we construct a wide family of smooth solutions with exponential in time growth for an arbitrary large interval of existence. Remarkably, the initial data leading to this exponential growth possibly lack any symmetry.
