Naturalness of asymptotically safe Higgs

We extend the list of theories featuring a rigorous interacting ultraviolet fixed point by constructing the first theory featuring a Higgs-like scalar with gauge, Yukawa and quartic interactions. We show that the theory enters a perturbative asymptotically safe regime at energies above a physical scale $Λ$. We determine the salient properties of the theory and use it as a concrete example to test whether scalars masses unavoidably receive quantum correction of order $Λ$. Having at our dispose a calculable model allowing us to precisely relate the IR and UV of the theory we demonstrate that the scalars can be lighter than $Λ$. Although we do not have an answer to whether the Standard Model hypercharge coupling growth towards a Landau pole at around $Λ\sim 10^{40}$ GeV can be tamed by non-perturbative asymptotic safety, our results indicate that such a possibility is worth exploring. In fact, if successful, it might also offer an explanation for the unbearable lightness of the Higgs.

Fundamental partial compositeness

We construct renormalizable Standard Model extensions, valid up to the Planck scale, that give a composite Higgs from a new fundamental strong force acting on fermions and scalars. Yukawa interactions of these particles with Standard Model fermions realize the partial compositeness scenario. Under certain assumptions on the dynamics of the scalars, successful models exist because gauge quantum numbers of Standard Model fermions admit a minimal enough 'square root'. Furthermore, right-handed SM fermions have an SU(2)$_R$-like structure, yielding a custodially-protected composite Higgs. Baryon and lepton numbers arise accidentally. Standard Model fermions acquire mass at tree level, while the Higgs potential and flavor violations are generated by quantum corrections. We further discuss accidental symmetries and other dynamical features stemming from the new strongly interacting scalars. If the same phenomenology can be obtained from models without our elementary scalars, they would reappear as composite states.

Di-photon resonance and Dark Matter as heavy pions

We analyse confining gauge theories where the 750 GeV di-photon resonance is a composite techni-pion that undergoes anomalous decays into SM vectors. These scenarios naturally contain accidentally stable techni-pions Dark Matter candidates. The di-photon resonance can acquire a larger width by decaying into Dark Matter through the CP-violating $θ$-term of the new gauge theory reproducing the cosmological Dark Matter density as thermal relic.

Trinification can explain the di-photon and di-boson LHC anomalies

LHC data show a diphoton excess at 750 GeV and a less significant diboson excess around 1.9 TeV. We propose trinification as a common source of both anomalies. The 1.9 TeV excess can be produced by the lightest extra vector: a $W_R^\pm$ with a gauge coupling $g_R\approx 0.44$ that does not decay into leptons. Furthermore, trinification predicts extra scalars. One of them can reproduce the $γγ$ excess while satisfying constraints from all other channels, given the specific set of extra fermions predicted by trinification.

Accidental Composite Dark Matter

We build models where Dark Matter candidates arise as composite states of a new confining gauge force, stable thanks to accidental symmetries. Restricting to renormalizable theories compatible with SU(5) unification, we find 13 models based on SU(N) gauge theories and 9 based on SO(N). We also describe other models that require non-renormalizable interactions. The two gauge groups lead to distinctive phenomenologies: SU(N) theories give complex DM, with potentially observable electric and magnetic dipole moments that lead to peculiar spin-independent cross sections; SO(N) theories give real DM, with challenging spin-dependent cross sections or inelastic scatterings. Models with Yukawa couplings also give rise to spin-independent direct detection mediated by the Higgs boson and to electric dipole moments for the electron. In some models DM has higher spin. Each model predicts a specific set of lighter composite scalars, possibly observable at colliders.

Non Minimal Terms in Composite Higgs Models and in QCD

We introduce a general parametrisation for theories where the Higgs is a Goldstone boson that encompasses all existing models. Our construction deviates from extra-dimensional or deconstructed theories through the inclusion of "non-local" interactions in theory space. These terms are necessary to reproduce the most general 4D effective lagrangian compatible with the symmetries. After showing the relation of our formalism to the Callan-Coleman-Wess-Zumino effective lagrangian we apply our framework to SO(5)/SO(4) composite Higgs models studying the implications for the Higgs potential, coupling of resonances and S-parameter. We also outline the relevance of non-minimal terms in effective descriptions of QCD, studying the electro-magnetic splitting of pions and the correlation between L_9 and L_10 in the chiral lagrangian.
