Enhanced two-photon emission from a dressed biexciton

Radiative two-photon cascades from biexcitons in semiconductor quantum dots under resonant two-photon excitation are promising candidates for the generation of photon pairs. In this work, we propose a scheme to obtain two-photon emission that allows to operate under very intense driving fields. This approach relies on the Purcell enhancement of two-photon virtual transitions between states of the biexciton dressed by the laser. The richness provided by the biexcitonic level structure allows to reach a variety of regimes, from antibunched and bunched photon pairs with polarization orthogonal to the driving field, to polarization entangled two-photon emission. This evidences that the general paradigm of two-photon emission from a ladder of dressed states can find interesting, particular implementations in a variety of systems.

Coherent generation of nonclassical light on chip via detuned photon blockade

The on-chip generation of non-classical states of light is a key-requirement for future optical quantum hardware. In solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics, such non-classical light can be generated from self-assembled quantum dots strongly coupled to photonic crystal cavities. Their anharmonic strong light-matter interaction results in large optical nonlinearities at the single photon level, where the admission of a single photon into the cavity may enhance (photon-tunnelling) or diminish (photon-blockade) the probability for a second photon to enter the cavity. Here, we demonstrate that detuning the cavity and QD resonances enables the generation of high-purity non-classical light from strongly coupled systems. For specific detunings we show that not only the purity but also the efficiency of single-photon generation increases significantly, making high-quality single-photon generation by photon-blockade possible with current state-of-the-art samples.

Violation of classical inequalities by photon frequency-filtering

The violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz and Bell inequalities ranks among the major evidences of the genuinely quantum nature of an emitter. We show that by dispensing from the usual approximation of mode correlations and studying directly correlations between the physical reality -the photons- these violations can be optimized. This is achieved by extending the concept of photon correlations to all frequencies in all the possible windows of detections, with no prejudice to the supposed origin of the photons. We identify the regions of quantum emission as rooted in collective de-excitation involving virtual states instead of, as previously assumed, cascaded transitions between real states.

Photon correlations from ultra-strong optical nonlinearities

We study the full field and frequency filtered output photon statistics of a resonator in thermal equilibrium with a bath and containing an arbitrarily large quartic nonlinearity. According to the general theory of photodetection, we derive general input-output relations valid for the ultra-anharmonic regime, where the nonlinearity becomes comparable to the energy of the resonator, and show how the emission properties are modified as compared to the generally assumed simple anharmonic regime. We analyse the impact of the nonlinearity on the full statistics of the emission and its spectral properties. In particular we derive a semi-analytical expression for the frequency resolved two-photon correlations or two-photon spectrum of the system in terms of the master equation coefficients and density matrix. This provides a very clear insight into the level structure and emission possibilities of the system.

Correlator expansion approach to stationary states of weakly coupled cavity arrays

We introduce a method for calculating the stationary state of a translation invariant array of weakly coupled cavities in the presence of dissipation and coherent as well as incoherent drives. Instead of computing the full density matrix our method directly calculates the correlation functions which are relevant for obtaining all local quantities of interest. It considers an expansion of the correlation functions and their equations of motion in powers of the photon tunneling rate between adjacent cavities, leading to an exact second order solution for any number of cavities. Our method provides a controllable approximation for weak tunneling rates applicable to the strongly correlated regime that is dominated by nonlinearities in the cavities and thus of high interest.

Distilling one, two and entangled pairs of photons from a quantum dot with cavity QED effects and spectral filtering

A quantum dot can be used as a source of one- and two-photon states and of polarisation entangled photon pairs. The emission of such states is investigated from the point of view of frequency-resolved two-photon correlations. These follow from a spectral filtering of the dot emission, which can be achieved either by using a cavity or by placing a number of interference filters before the detectors. The combination of these various options is used to iteratively refine the emission in a "distillation" process and arrive at highly correlated states with a high purity. So-called "leapfrog processes" where the system undergoes a direct transition from the biexciton state to the ground state by direct emission of two photons, are shown to be central to the quantum features of such sources. Optimum configurations are singled out in a global theoretical picture that unifies the various regimes of operation.

Theory of frequency-filtered and time-resolved N-photon correlations

A theory of correlations between N photons of given frequencies and detected at given time delays is presented. These correlation functions are usually too cumbersome to be computed explicitly. We show that they are obtained exactly through intensity correlations between two-level sensors in the limit of their vanishing coupling to the system. This allows the computation of correlation functions hitherto unreachable. The uncertainties in time and frequency of the detection, which are necessary variables to describe the system, are intrinsic to the theory. We illustrate the formalism with the Jaynes--Cummings model, showing how correlations of various peaks at zero or finite time delays bring new insights into the dynamics of open quantum systems.

Fluctuation induced luminescence sidebands in the emission spectra of resonantly driven quantum dots

We describe how complex fluctuations of the local environment of an optically active quantum dot can leave rich fingerprints in its emission spectrum. A new feature, termed "Fluctuation Induced Luminescence" (FIL), is observed to arise from extremely rare fluctuation events that have a dramatic impact on the response of the system-so called "black swan" events. A quantum dissipative master equation formalism is developed to describe this effect phenomenologically. Experiments performed on single quantum dots subject to electrical noise show excellent agreement with our theory, producing the characteristic FIL sidebands.

Generation of a two-photon state from a quantum dot in a microcavity under incoherent and coherent continuous excitation

We analyze the impact of both an incoherent and a coherent continuous excitation on our proposal to generate a two-photon state from a quantum dot in a microcavity [New J. Phys. 13, 113014 (2011)]. A comparison between exact numerical results and analytical formulas provides the conditions to efficiently generate indistinguishable and simultaneous pairs of photons under both types of excitation.

Signatures of single site addressability in resonance fluorescence spectra

Pioneering methods in recent optical lattice experiments allow to focus laser beams down to a spot size that is comparable to the lattice constant. Inspired by this achievement, we examine the resonance fluorescence spectra of two-level atoms positioned in adjacent lattice sites and compare the case where the laser hits only one atom (single site addressing) with cases where several atoms are illuminated. In contrast to the case where the laser hits several atoms, the spectrum for single site addressing is no longer symmetric around the laser frequency. The shape of the spectrum of fluorescent light can therefore serve as a test for single site addressing. The effects we find can be attributed to a dipole-dipole interaction between the atoms due to mutual exchange of photons.

Climbing the Jaynes-Cummings ladder by photon counting

We present a new method to observe direct experimental evidence of Jaynes--Cummings nonlinearities in a strongly dissipative cavity quantum electrodynamics system, where large losses compete with the strong light-matter interaction. This is a highly topical problem, particularly for quantum dots in microcavities where transitions from higher rungs of the Jaynes--Cummings ladder remain to be evidenced explicitly. We compare coherent and incoherent excitations of the system and find that resonant excitation of the detuned emitter make it possible to unambiguously evidence few photon quantum nonlinearities in currently available experimental systems.

THz lasing in a polariton system: Quantum theory

We study the laser regime of terahertz (THz) emission from a semiconductor microcavity in the strong coupling regime, where optical transitions between upper and lower exciton-polariton modes are allowed due to the mixing of the upper mode with one of the dark exciton states. Using a system of master-Boltzmann equations describing both polariton modes and the THz mode, we calculate the first and second order coherences and the spectral shape of THz emission. This analysis shows that THz lasing in microcavities is possible provided that the system is embedded in a good THz cavity, that the optical (polariton) lasing condition is fulfilled and if the depletion of the upper polariton mode due to acoustic phonon assisted relaxation processes is reduced. This latter condition is likely to be realised in pillar microcavities, which seem to be the most suitable candidates for realisation of a THz laser.

Steady state entanglement of two coupled qubits

The maximum entanglement between two coupled qubits in the steady state under two independent incoherent sources of excitation is reported. Asymmetric configurations where one qubit is excited while the other one dissipates the excitation are optimal for entanglement, reaching values three times larger than with thermal sources. The reason is the purification of the steady state mixture (that includes a Bell state) thanks to the saturation of the pumped qubit. Photon antibunching between the cross emission of the qubits can be used to experimentally evidence the large degrees of entanglement.

Strong and weak coupling of two coupled qubits

I investigate the dynamics and power spectrum of two coupled qubits (two-level systems) under incoherent continuous pump and dissipation. New regimes of strong coupling are identified, that are due to additional paths of coherence flow in the system. Dressed states are reconstructed even in the regime of strong decoherence. The results are analytical and offer an exact description of strong-coupling in presence of pumping and decay in a nontrivial (nonlinear) system.

Two-photon lasing by a single quantum dot in a high-Q microcavity

We investigate theoretically two-photon processes in a microcavity containing one quantum dot in the strong coupling regime. The cavity mode can be tuned to resonantly drive the two-photon transition between the ground and the biexciton states, while the exciton states are far-off resonance due to the biexciton binding energy. We study the steady state of the quantum dot and cavity field in presence of a continuous incoherent pumping. We identify the regime where the system acts as two-photon emitter and discuss the feasibility and performance of realistic single quantum dot devices for two-photon lasing.

Optical Spectra of the Jaynes-Cummings Ladder

We explore how the Jaynes-Cummings ladder transpires in the emitted spectra of a two-level system in strong coupling with a single mode of light. We focus on the case of very strong coupling, that would be achieved with systems of exceedingly good quality (very long lifetimes for both the emitter and the cavity). We consider the incoherent regime of excitation, that is realized with semiconductors quantum dots in microcavities, and discuss how reasonable is the understanding of the systems in terms of transitions between dressed states of the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian.

Luminescence Spectra of Quantum Dots in Microcavities. II. Fermions

We discuss the luminescence spectra of coupled light-matter systems realized with semiconductor heterostructures in microcavities in the presence of a continuous, incoherent pumping, when the matter field is Fermionic. The linear regime--which has been the main topic of investigation both experimentally and theoretically--converges to the case of coupling to a Bosonic material field, and has been amply discussed in the first part of this work. We address here the nonlinear regime, and argue that, counter to intuition, it is better observed at low pumping intensities. We support our discussion with particular cases representative of, and beyond, the experimental state of the art. We explore the transition from the quantum to the classical regime, by decomposing the total spectrum into individual transitions between the dressed states of the light-matter coupling Hamiltonian, reducing the problem to the positions and broadenings of all possible transitions. As the system crosses to the classical limit, rich multiplet structures mapping the quantized energy levels melt and turn to cavity lasing and to an incoherent Mollow triplet in the direct exciton emission for very good structure. Less ideal figures of merit can still betray the quantum regime, with a proper balance of cavity versus electronic pumping.
