Quantum detection of CP violation in the $t\bar{t}$ system: production

We investigate how possible new CP-violating top-quark interactions are encoded in the quantum state of a produced $t\bar t$ pair. We derive analytic expressions for the production density matrix in several benchmark channels relevant to hadron, lepton and photon colliders. In a common spin basis, we identify two characteristic CP-odd structures in the Fano--Bloch decomposition: a difference between the top and antitop polarisation vectors and an antisymmetric component of the spin-correlation matrix. We construct observables that directly probe these structures and study how quantum information measures, including discord, concurrence, magic and trace distance, respond to CP-even and CP-odd SMEFT contributions. Finally, using current measurements and future collider projections, we assess the sensitivity of these observables to possible new sources of CP violation in top-quark production. This establishes the production-level framework whose experimental reconstruction is developed in a companion paper.

Quantum detection of CP violation in the $t\bar{t}$ system: tomography

We develop a quantum-tomographic framework for determining whether possible CP-odd effects in $t\bar t$ events originate in production, in decay, or in both. In the narrow-width approximation, the process $I\to t\bar t\to b\ell^+ν\,\bar b\ell^-\barν$ factorises into a production density matrix and top and antitop decay density matrices. We extend the standard tomography procedure to a general anomalous $Wtb$ vertex and derive the corresponding angular distributions. Polar-angle distributions retain their usual tomographic form, up to modifications of the spin-analysing powers, and can therefore be used to reconstruct the production density matrix and test its CP properties. By contrast, dedicated azimuthal observables involving the $b$--lepton decay planes contain characteristic sine modulations that provide linear probes of possible new CP-violating interactions in the decay vertex. Combining the two classes of observables gives a systematic strategy for separating sources of CP violation in production and in decay. We illustrate the resulting angular signatures for representative $t\bar t$ production scenarios at hadron and lepton colliders.

Constraining four-heavy-quark operators with top-quark, Higgs, and electroweak precision data

We establish constraints on the dimension-six four-heavy-quark operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) by synthesising LHC measurements of top-quark and single-Higgs production with electroweak precision observables. We scrutinise the choice of the $γ_5$ scheme in single-Higgs calculations, demonstrating its non-negligible impact on SMEFT fits.

Sensitivity to top-quark couplings in diboson production at lepton colliders

We study the next-to-leading order electroweak corrections to $e^+e^- \rightarrow W^+W^-$ from dimension-six two-fermion top-quark operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. We compute analytical and numerical results for future electron-positron colliders, focusing on the proposed LEP3 and FCC-ee that will operate at centre-of-mass energies below the $t \bar{t}$ production threshold. We compare the indirect sensitivity arising from virtual corrections to $WW$ production to that from $ZH$ production, and to the current constraints from LEP and LHC data. We show that NLO corrections can provide competitive sensitivity to these operators. This work represents a first step towards the systematic computation of electroweak corrections to $W$-pair production at lepton colliders in the SMEFT, whose impact can then be properly assessed in global analyses.

New Physics Reach through Precision at Future Colliders: a Multi-Pronged Approach

We present projections for the sensitivity of future high-energy colliders to new physics through precision measurements of the Standard Model (SM) interactions, focusing on near-term electron-positron facilities: FCC-ee, LEP3, and the Linear Collider Facility. We interpret these projections in three complementary frameworks: Higgs coupling modifiers, effective Higgs and electroweak couplings, and global SMEFT fits. The SMEFT analysis includes renormalisation-group evolution, linear/quadratic contributions, and NLO corrections to EFT cross sections where available. By matching the EFT to UV-complete models, we also quantify the sensitivity of future colliders to representative benchmark scenarios, including composite Higgs models and single-particle SM extensions. In parallel, we release an updated version of the open-source SMEFiT framework, enabling the results presented here to be fully reproduced, extended, and customised.

Two-loop renormalisation of the quark fields in the presence of four-fermion SMEFT operators

We compute the contributions of the dimension-6 SMEFT operators involving four third-generation quarks to the two-loop renormalisation of the quark fields and masses. We perform the computations in both the Naive Dimensional Regularisation (NDR) and the Breitenlohner-Maison-`t Hooft-Veltman (BMHV) schemes, and we present results for all relevant field and mass renormalisation constants in the on-shell and MS-bar schemes. We carefully discuss all scheme choices which affect the final results. This completes the computation of field and mass renormalisation constants relevant for two-loop computations in QCD involving dimension-six SMEFT operators.

Triple-gauge couplings in LHC diboson production: a SMEFT view from every angle

This study explores fully leptonic WZ and WW production at the LHC within the SMEFT framework at NLO in QCD, focusing on both CP-even and CP-odd triple-gauge-coupling dimension-six operators. We investigate the off-shell processes, contrasting our findings in inclusive setups with those in the presence of realistic fiducial selections. Alongside the conventional kinematic observables, we examine polarisation-sensitive observables and angular coefficients. Moreover, we assess potential SMEFT effects on asymmetry observables. Through a sensitivity analysis, we identify critical LHC observables that are particularly sensitive to SMEFT-induced modifications, thereby shedding light on potential avenues for new-physics searches in diboson production at the LHC.

Electroweak corrections in the SMEFT: four-fermion operators at high energies

In the Standard Model (SM), electroweak (EW) corrections become significant at high energies, particularly at the tera-electronvolt scale and beyond, due to the presence of Sudakov logarithms. At these energy scales, the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework provides an enhanced sensitivity to potential new physics effects. This motivates the inclusion of EW corrections not only for SM predictions but also for analyses within SMEFT. In this work, we compute EW corrections in the high-energy limit for a selected set of dimension-six operators, specifically the class of four-fermion contact interactions, in key hard-scattering processes relevant to both current and future colliders: top-quark pair production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and in a muon collider scenario, as well as the Drell-Yan process at the LHC. We first discuss the technical details and challenges associated with evaluating EW Sudakov logarithms in SMEFT, contrasting them with the SM case. We then present phenomenological results for the aforementioned processes, highlighting the non-trivial effects introduced by EW corrections arising from the insertion of dimension-six, four-fermion operators. Importantly, the resulting $K$-factors exhibit significant deviations from their SM counterparts, with dependencies not only on the process but also on the specific operators considered. Finally, we explore the potential to lift flat directions in the SMEFT parameter space by incorporating higher-order corrections, using Fisher information techniques.

Diboson production in the SMEFT at dimension-8

We present a comprehensive analysis of dimension-8 and dimension-6 effects in fully leptonic $WZ$ and $WW$ production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) within the Standard Model (SM) Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We focus on dimension-8 operators with maximal energy growth in the quark-(anti)quark-initiated production channel and assess their impact differentially through a variety of observables, including polarisation-sensitive ones. Leveraging existing data from measurements at the LHC, we perform fits to quantify the sensitivity of current and future data to dimension-8 effects and evaluate their interplay with squared dimension-6 contributions. By marginalising over the dimension-8 operators we examine the robustness of a dimension-6 SMEFT analysis in diboson production. We find that dimension-8 effects become subdominant only for new-physics scales above 3 TeV.

Quantum Information meets High-Energy Physics: Input to the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

Some of the most astonishing and prominent properties of Quantum Mechanics, such as entanglement and Bell nonlocality, have only been studied extensively in dedicated low-energy laboratory setups. The feasibility of these studies in the high-energy regime explored by particle colliders was only recently shown and has gathered the attention of the scientific community. For the range of particles and fundamental interactions involved, particle colliders provide a novel environment where quantum information theory can be probed, with energies exceeding by about 12 orders of magnitude those employed in dedicated laboratory setups. Furthermore, collider detectors have inherent advantages in performing certain quantum information measurements, and allow for the reconstruction of the state of the system under consideration via quantum state tomography. Here, we elaborate on the potential, challenges, and goals of this innovative and rapidly evolving line of research and discuss its expected impact on both quantum information theory and high-energy physics.

Two-loop renormalisation of quark and gluon fields in the SMEFT in the on-shell scheme

We compute the contributions of CP-conserving dimension-six SMEFT operators to the two-loop renormalisation constants of quark and gluon fields in the on-shell scheme. Specifically, we consider the top-quark chromomagnetic operator and the triple gluon operator. We also compute the contribution of four-quark operators to the gluon renormalisation constant and discuss the implications for the running of the strong coupling constant.

Higgs trilinear coupling in the standard model effective field theory at the high luminosity LHC and the FCC-ee

Motivated by the updated HL-LHC projections for Higgs pair production from ATLAS and CMS and by the release of the FCC-ee Feasibility Study, we critically revisit the sensitivity of the global SMEFT analysis to deformations of the Higgs self-coupling modifier $κ_3$. To this end, we quantify the impact of SMEFT operators modifying double Higgs production at the LHC and single Higgs production, including loop corrections, at the FCC-ee, and include Renormalisation Group Evolution throughout. We demonstrate that significantly improving on the legacy HL-LHC constraints on $κ_3$ at the FCC-ee is not possible without the $\sqrt{s}=365$ GeV run; that individual and marginalised determinations are similar at the HL-LHC while differing by up to a factor 3 at the FCC-ee; and that quadratic EFT corrections cannot be neglected. Overall, the combination of HL-LHC and FCC-ee data offers unique potential to pin down the Higgs self-coupling with $\sim$$15\%$ precision.

Sensitivity to $\mathcal{CP}$-violating effective couplings in the top-Higgs sector

The observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe requires new sources of charge-parity ($\mathcal{CP}$) violation beyond those in the Standard Model. In this work, we investigate $\mathcal{CP}$-violating effects in the top-Higgs sector using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework. Focusing on top-pair production in association with a Higgs boson and single top-Higgs associated production at the LHC, we study $\mathcal{CP}$ violation in the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling and other Higgs and top interactions entering these processes. By analysing $\mathcal{CP}$-sensitive differential observables and asymmetries, we provide direct constraints on $\mathcal{CP}$-violating interactions in the top-Higgs sector. Our analysis demonstrates how combining $t\bar{t}h$ and $thj$ production can disentangle the real and imaginary components of the top-Yukawa coupling, offering valuable insights into potential sources of $\mathcal{CP}$ violation. The sensitivity of these observables to SMEFT operators provides model-independent constraints on the parameter space, advancing the search for new physics in the top-Higgs sector.

Two-loop renormalisation of quark and gluon fields in the SMEFT

We compute the contributions of CP-conserving operators in the dimension-six SMEFT to the two-loop renormalisation constants of quark and gluon fields in the $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$-scheme. Specifically, we consider the top-quark chromomagnetic operator and the triple gluon operator. We work with the background-field method, which allows us to extract the contribution of these operators to the two-loop running of the top mass and the strong coupling constant. We discuss in detail the mixing with the unphysical operators required for the renormalisation, and we present analytic results for the renormalisation constants of all relevant operators.

Connecting Scales: RGE Effects in the SMEFT at the LHC and Future Colliders

Global interpretations of particle physics data within the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), including their matching to UV-complete models, involve energy scales potentially spanning several orders of magnitude. Relating these measurements among them in terms of a common energy scale is enabled by the Renormalisation Group Equations (RGEs). Here we present a systematic assessment of the impact of RGEs, accounting for QCD, electroweak, and Yukawa corrections, in a global SMEFT fit of LEP and LHC data where individual cross-sections are assigned a characteristic energy scale. We also quantify the impact of the RGE effects in projected global fits at the HL-LHC and the FCC-ee. Finally, we assess the role that RGEs play on the sensitivity at HL-LHC and FCC-ee to representative one-particle UV models matched onto SMEFT either at tree and one-loop level. Our study emphasizes the importance of a consistent treatment of energy scales to achieve the best precision and accuracy in indirect searches for heavy new physics through precision measurements.

Diboson production in the SMEFT from gluon fusion

Precision measurements of diboson production at the LHC is an important probe of the limits of the Standard Model. The gluon-fusion channel of this process offers a connection between the Higgs and top sectors. We study in a systematic way gluon-induced diboson production in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. We compute the amplitudes of double Higgs, double $Z/W$ and associated $ZH$ production at one loop and with up to one insertion of a dimension-6 operator. We study their high-energy limit and identify to which operators each channel could be most sensitive. To illustrate the relevance of these processes, we perform a phenomenological study of associated $ZH$ production. We show that for some top operators the gluon-induced channel can offer competitive sensitivity to constraints obtained from top quark production processes.

CP violation in loop-induced diboson production

We consider the impact of CP-violating Higgs and top interactions on diboson production from gluon fusion within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework. We systematically study differential distributions for double Higgs, double $W$ and $Z$ production and compare their features to those obtained from CP-conserving interactions. For electroweak gauge boson production, we explore the impact of the new interactions on the angular distributions of the leptonic decay products and the associated gauge boson polarisation fractions both inclusively and differentially with the transverse momentum of the gauge boson.

Mapping the SMEFT at High-Energy Colliders: from LEP and the (HL-)LHC to the FCC-ee

We present SMEFiT3.0, an updated global SMEFT analysis of Higgs, top quark, and diboson production data from the LHC complemented by electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) from LEP and SLD. We consider recent inclusive and differential measurements from the LHC Run II, alongside with a novel implementation of the EWPOs based on independent calculations of the relevant EFT contributions. We estimate the impact of HL-LHC measurements on the SMEFT parameter space when added on top of SMEFiT3.0, through dedicated projections extrapolating from Run II data. We quantify the significant constraints that measurements from two proposed high-energy circular $e^+e^-$ colliders, the FCC-ee and the CEPC, would impose on both the SMEFT parameter space and on representative UV-complete models. Our analysis considers projections for the FCC-ee and the CEPC based on the latest running scenarios and includes $Z$-pole EWPOs, fermion-pair, Higgs, diboson, and top quark production, using optimal observables for both the $W^+W^-$ and the $t\bar{t}$ channels. The framework presented in this work may be extended to other future colliders and running scenarios, providing timely input to ongoing studies towards future high-energy particle physics facilities.
