Higher Poles and Crossing Phenomena from Twisted Genera

We demonstrate that Appell-Lerch sums with higher order poles as well as their modular covariant completions arise as partition functions in the cigar conformal field theory with worldsheet supersymmetry. The modular covariant derivatives of the elliptic genus of the cigar give rise to operator insertions corresponding to (powers of) right-moving momentum, left-moving fermion number, as well as a term corresponding to an ordinary zero mode partition sum. To show this, we demonstrate how the right-moving supersymmetric quantum mechanics (and in particular the Hamiltonian and spectral density) depend on the imaginary part of the chemical potential for angular momentum. As a consequence of our analysis we find that varying the imaginary part of the chemical potential for angular momentum on the cigar gives rise to a wall-crossing phenomenon in the bound state contribution to the elliptic genus, while the full elliptic genus is a continuous function of the chemical potential.

On the Classification of Residues of the Grassmannian

We study leading singularities of scattering amplitudes which are obtained as residues of an integral over a Grassmannian manifold. We recursively do the transformation from twistors to momentum twistors and obtain an iterative formula for Yangian invariants that involves a succession of dualized twistor variables. This turns out to be useful in addressing the problem of classifying the residues of the Grassmannian. The iterative formula leads naturally to new coordinates on the Grassmannian in terms of which both composite and non-composite residues appear on an equal footing. We write down residue theorems in these new variables and classify the independent residues for some simple examples. These variables also explicitly exhibit the distinct solutions one expects to find for a given set of vanishing minors from Schubert calculus.

Matrix Factorizations For Non-Abelian Orbifolds

We discuss a prescription to construct fractional branes in Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds, with particular attention to the case of non-abelian orbifolds. We analyze in detail a S_3 orbifold and a D_n orbifold and show how the computation of the spectrum can be carried out explicitly even when the factorizations involve higher rank matrices.

Children's Drawings From Seiberg-Witten Curves

We consider N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories perturbed by tree level superpotential terms near isolated singular points in the Coulomb moduli space. We identify the Seiberg-Witten curve at these points with polynomial equations used to construct what Grothendieck called "dessins d'enfants" or "children's drawings" on the Riemann sphere. From a mathematical point of view, the dessins are important because the absolute Galois group Gal(\bar{Q}/Q) acts faithfully on them. We argue that the relation between the dessins and Seiberg-Witten theory is useful because gauge theory criteria used to distinguish branches of N=1 vacua can lead to mathematical invariants that help to distinguish dessins belonging to different Galois orbits. For instance, we show that the confinement index defined in hep-th/0301006 is a Galois invariant. We further make some conjectures on the relation between Grothendieck's programme of classifying dessins into Galois orbits and the physics problem of classifying phases of N=1 gauge theories.

Strebel Differentials With Integral Lengths And Argyres-Douglas Singularities

Strebel differentials are a special class of quadratic differentials with several applications in string theory. In this note we show that finding Strebel differentials with integral lengths is equivalent to finding generalized Argyres-Douglas singularities in the Coulomb moduli space of a U(N) $\N=2$ gauge theory with massive flavours. Using this relation, we find an efficient technique to solve the problem of factorizing the Seiberg-Witten curve at the Argyres-Douglas singularity. We also comment upon a relation between more general Seiberg-Witten curves and Belyi maps.

D-branes in Toroidal Orbifolds and Mirror Symmetry

We study D-branes extended in T^2/Z_4 using the mirror description as a tensor product of minimal models. We describe branes in the mirror both as boundary states in minimal models and as matrix factorizations in the corresponding Landau-Ginzburg model. We isolate a minimal set of branes and give a geometric interpretation of these as D1-branes constrained to the orbifold fixed points. This picture is supported both by spacetime arguments and by the explicit construction of the boundary states, adapting the known results for rational boundary states in the minimal models. Similar techniques apply to a larger class of toroidal orbifolds.

LHC Signatures of Resonant CP Violation in a Minimal Supersymmetric Higgs Sector

We present the general formalism for studying CP-violating phenomena in the production, mixing and decay of a coupled system of CP-violating neutral Higgs bosons at high-energy colliders. Considering the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) Higgs sector in which CP violation is radiatively induced by phases in the soft supersymmetry-breaking third-generation trilinear squark couplings and gaugino masses, we apply our formalism to neutral Higgs production via {\bar b}b, gg and W^+ W^- collisions at the LHC. We discuss CP asymmetries in the longitudinal and transverse polarizations of τ^+ τ^- pairs. The signatures of CP violation are more prominent in the production via gg and W^+ W^- than via {\bar b}b, and are resonantly enhanced when two (or all three) neutral Higgs bosons are nearly degenerate with mass differences comparable to their decay widths. Such scenarios occur naturally in the MSSM for values of \tanβ>~ 5 (30) and large (small) charged Higgs-boson masses. We analyze representative examples with large mixing between the three neutral Higgs bosons weighing about 120 GeV, that may exhibit observable CP asymmetries even as large as 80%.

Fractional Branes in Landau-Ginzburg Orbifolds

We construct fractional branes in Landau-Ginzburg orbifold categories and study their behavior under marginal closed string perturbations. This approach is shown to be more general than the rational boundary state construction. In particular we find new D-branes on the quintic -- such as a single D0-brane -- which are not restrictions of bundles on the ambient projective space. We also exhibit a family of deformations of the D0-brane in the Landau-Ginzburg category parameterized by points on the Fermat quintic.
