Anderson orthogonality scaling in the Rabi-driven heavy Fermi polaron

The Anderson orthogonality catastrophe (AOC) is a paradigmatic many-body phenomenon in which a local perturbation induces a macroscopic response of a Fermi sea. We probe signatures of the AOC by coherently driving heavy Fermi polarons in an ultracold $^6$Li-$^{133}$Cs mixture. We observe a power-law dependence of the measured Rabi frequency on the drive strength, with exponents consistent with AOC predictions. Finite-temperature simulations quantitatively reproduce the observed scaling, indicating that AOC signatures persist beyond the idealized zero-temperature, infinite-mass limit. The damping of the Rabi oscillations provides access to polaron dephasing and reveals a nonmonotonic drive dependence, qualitatively consistent with current theories. Our results establish coherently driven impurities as a versatile probe of quantum many-body dynamics through local coherent control.

The heavy Fermi polaron I: the Lithium-Cesium experiment

We present details of an experimental platform for studying Fermi polarons in a quantum-gas mixture. The system consists of about a thousand bosonic $^{133}$Cs impurities immersed in a deeply degenerate Fermi gas ($T/T_F \sim 0.2$) of approximately $2\times 10^5$ $^6$Li atoms in a single hyperfine state, with interspecies interactions tunable via a Feshbach resonance. Using optical Raman spectroscopy without relative momentum transfer, we perform injection spectroscopy and thereby create the Fermi polaron. Owing to the large mass imbalance between the two species, the setup provides access to previously unexplored regimes of Fermi polarons.

Engineering a Bound State in the Continuum via Quantum Interference

Quantum mechanical interaction potentials typically support either localized bound states below the dissociation threshold or delocalized scattering states above it. While bound states are energetically isolated, scattering states embed a quantum system in a continuum of environmental modes, making dissipation and loss intrisic features of open quantum systems. A striking exception are bound states in the continuum (BICs), which remain localized despite lying within the scattering continuum due to destructive interference. It was predicted that such states can arise from the interference of two Feshbach resonances coupled to a common continuum, yet this mechanism has remained experimentally inaccessible in genuine quantum systems. Here we demonstrate the formation of such an interference-stabilized state in ultracold collisions of ${}^6$Li atoms by coherently coupling two tunable Feshbach resonances using Floquet engineering. At a critical parameter point, both elastic and inelastic coupling to the continuum vanish, yielding a molecular state above the dissociation threshold. Loss spectroscopy, quench dynamics, and rf-photoassociation directly reveal the resulting decoupling from scattering states. Our observations are quantitatively captured by full coupled-channel calculations and a minimal non-Hermitian model, identifying a Friedrich-Wintgen BIC. Our results establish quantum interference as a powerful mechanism for controlling openness in quantum matter and for engineering non-Hermitian Hamiltonians.

An experimental platform for studying the heteronuclear Efimov effect with an ultracold mixture of $^6$Li and $^{133}$Cs atoms

We present the experimental apparatus enabling the observation of the heteronuclear Efimov effect in an optically trapped ultracold mixture of $^6$Li-$^{133}$Cs with high-resolution control of the interactions. A compact double-species Zeeman slower consisting of four interleaving helical coils allows for a fast-switching between two optimized configurations for either Li or Cs and provides an efficient sequential loading into their respective MOTs. By means of a bichromatic optical trapping scheme based on species-selective trapping we prepare mixtures down to 100 nK of 1$\times$ 10$^4$ Cs atoms and 7$\times$ 10$^3$ Li atoms. Highly stable magnetic fields allow high-resolution atom-loss spectroscopy and enable to resolve splitting in the loss feature of a few tens of milligauss. These features allowed for a detailed study of the Efimov effect.

The HDvent Emergency Ventilator System

The pandemic caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has affected countries all across the world, heavily burdening the medical infrastructure with the growing number of patients affected by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). With ventilators in limited supply, this public health emergency highlights the need for safe, fast, reliable, and economical alternatives to high-end commercial devices and has prompted the development of easy-to-use and mass-producible ventilators. Here, we detail the design of the HDvent Emergency Ventilator System. The device performs ventilation through mechanical compression of manual resuscitators and includes control electronics, flow and pressure sensors, and an external data visualization and monitoring unit. We demonstrate its suitability for open loop, pressure- and volume-controlled ventilation. The system has not undergone clinical testing and has not been approved for use as a medical device. The project documentation needed to reproduce the prototype is freely available and will contribute to the development of open source ventilation systems.

Scattering of two heavy Fermi polarons: resonances and quasibound states

Impurities in a Fermi sea, or Fermi polarons, experience a Casimir interaction induced by quantum fluctuations of the medium. When there is short-range attraction between impurities and fermions, also the induced interaction between two impurities is strongly attractive at short distance and oscillates in space for larger distances. We theoretically investigate the scattering properties and compute the scattering phase shifts and scattering lengths between two heavy impurities in an ideal Fermi gas at zero temperature. While the induced interaction between impurities is weakly attractive for weak impurity-medium interactions, we find that impurities strongly and attractively interacting with the medium exhibit resonances in the induced scattering with a sign change of the induced scattering length and even strong repulsion. These resonances occur whenever a three-body Efimov bound state appears at the continuum threshold. At energies above the continuum threshold, we find that the Efimov state in medium can turn into a quasibound state with a finite decay width.

Fermions meet two bosons -- the heteronuclear Efimov effect revisited

In this article, we revisit the heteronuclear Efimov effect in a Bose-Fermi mixture with large mass difference in the Born-Oppenheimer picture. As a specific example, we consider the combination of bosonic $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ and fermionic $^6\mathrm{Li}$. In a system consisting of two heavy bosons and one light fermion, the fermion-mediated potential between the two heavy bosons gives rise to an infinite series of three-body bound states. The intraspecies scattering length determines the three-body parameter and the scaling factor between consecutive Efimov states. In a second scenario, we replace the single fermion by an entire Fermi Sea at zero temperature. The emerging interaction potential for the two bosons exhibits long-range oscillations leading to a weakening of the binding and a breakup of the infinite series of Efimov states. In this scenario, the binding energies follow a modified Efimov scaling law incorporating the Fermi momentum. The scaling factor between deeply bound states is governed by the intraspecies interaction, analogous to the Efimov states in vacuum.
