Singularities of star cluster algebras

We introduce the class of star cluster algebras and classify their singularities. Then we focus on the combinatorial structure of the desingularization by determining the number of irreducible centers that are blown up.

Penrose tilings, infinite friezes, and the $A_\infty$-singularity

We study Penrose tilings of the plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ and nonperiodic infinite frieze patterns from the point of view of Cohen--Macaulay representation theory: Triangulations of the completed infinity-gon correspond to subcategories of the Frobenius category $\mathcal{C}_2=\mathrm{CM}_{\mathbb{Z}}(\mathbb{C}[x,y]/(x^2))$, the singularity category of the curve singularity of type $A_\infty$. We relate Penrose tilings to certain triangulations of the completed infinity-gon, and thus to the corresponding subcategories of $\mathcal{C}_2$. We then extend the cluster character of Paquette and Y{\i}ld{\i}r{\i}m for a triangulated category modelling said triangulations to our setting. This allows us to define nonperiodic infinite friezes patterns coming from triangulations of the completed infinity-gon and in particular from Penrose tilings.

Frieze patterns in representation theory

Friezes patterns are infinite arrays of numbers, in which every four neighbouring vertices arranged in a diamond satisfy the same arithmetic rule. Introduced in the late 1960s by Coxeter, and further studied by Conway and Coxeter in their remarkable papers from $1973$, this topic has been nearly forgotten for over thirty years. But since the discovery of connections to cluster algebras and categories of type $A$, interest in friezes has exploded, several generalizations have been studied, and links to geometry and combinatorics have been explored. In this article we will review some of the most striking results connecting the purely combinatorially defined friezes with triangulations of polygons, Grassmannian cluster algebras and (Grassmannian) cluster categories. Then we will focus on Grassmannian cluster categories and some recent results linking them to friezes.

An explicit derived McKay correspondence for some complex reflection groups of rank two

In this paper, we explore the derived McKay correspondence for several reflection groups, namely reflection groups of rank two generated by reflections of order two. We prove that for each of the reflection groups $G=G(2m,m,2)$, $G_{12}$, $G_{13}$, or $G_{22}$, there is a semiorthogonal decomposition of the following form, where $B_1,\ldots,B_r$ are the normalizations of the irreducible components of the branch divisor $\mathbb{C}^2\to \mathbb{C}^2/G$ and $E_1,\ldots,E_n$ are exceptional objects: $$D^G(\mathbb{C}^2)\cong \langle E_1,\ldots,E_n,D(B_1),\ldots, D(B_r), D(\mathbb{C}^2/G)\rangle.$$ We verify that the pieces of this decomposition correspond to the irreducible representations of $G$, verifying the Orbifold Semiorthogonal Decomposition Conjecture of Polishchuk and Van den Bergh. Due to work of Potter on the group $G(m,m,2)$, this conjecture is now proven for all finite groups $G\leq \mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ that are generated by order $2$ reflections. Each of these groups contains, as a subgroup of index $2$, a distinct finite group $H\leq \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. A key part of our work is an explicit computation of the action of $G/H$ on the $H$-Hilbert scheme $\textrm{$H$-Hilb}(\mathbb{C}^2)$.

Frieze patterns and combinatorics of curve singularities

We study the connection between Conway-Coxeter frieze patterns and the data of the minimal resolution of a complex curve singularity: using Popescu-Pampu's notion of the lotus of a singularity, we describe a bijection between the dual resolution graphs of Newton non-degenerate plane curve singularities and Conway-Coxeter friezes. We use representation theoretic reduction methods to interpret some of the entries of the frieze coming from the partial resolutions of the corresponding curve singularity. Finally, we translate the notion of mutation, coming from cluster combinatorics, to resolutions of plane complex curves.

Reduction of Frobenius extriangulated categories

We describe a reduction technique for stably 2-Calabi--Yau Frobenius extriangulated categories $\mathcal{F}$ with respect to a functorially finite rigid subcategory $\mathcal{X}$. The reduction of such a category is another category $\mathcal{X}^{\perp_1}\subseteq\mathcal{F}$ of the same kind, whose cluster-tilting subcategories are those cluster-tilting subcategories $\mathcal{T}\subseteq\mathcal{F}$ such that $\mathcal{X}\subseteq\mathcal{T}$. This reduction operation generalises Iyama--Yoshino's reduction for 2-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories, which is recovered by passing to stable categories. Moreover, for a certain class of categories $\mathcal{F}$ and rigid objects $M$, we show that the relationship between $\mathcal{F}$ and $M^{\perp_1}$ may also be expressed in terms of internally Calabi--Yau algebras, in the sense of the third author. As an application, we give a conceptual proof of a result on frieze patterns originally obtained by the first author with Baur, Gratz, Serhiyenko, and Todorov.

Categories for Grassmannian cluster algebras of infinite rank

We construct Grassmannian categories of infinite rank, providing an infinite analogue of the Grassmannian cluster categories introduced by Jensen, King, and Su. Each Grassmannian category of infinite rank is given as the category of graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a certain hypersurface singularity. We show that generically free modules of rank $1$ in a Grassmannian category of infinite rank are in bijection with the Plücker coordinates in an appropriate Grassmannian cluster algebra of infinite rank. Moreover, this bijection is structure preserving, as it relates rigidity in the category to compatibility of Plücker coordinates. Along the way, we develop a combinatorial formula to compute the dimension of the $\mathrm{Ext}^1$-spaces between any two generically free modules of rank $1$ in the Grassmannian category of infinite rank.

Matrix Factorizations of the discriminant of $S_n$

Consider the symmetric group $S_n$ acting as a reflection group on the polynomial ring $k[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$, where $k$ is a field such that Char$(k)$ does not divide $n!$. We use Higher Specht polynomials to construct matrix factorizations of the discriminant of this group action: these matrix factorizations are indexed by partitions of $n$ and respect the decomposition of the coinvariant algebra into isotypical components. The maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules associated to these matrix factorizations give rise to a noncommutative resolution of the discriminant and they correspond to the nontrivial irreducible representations of $S_n$. All our constructions are implemented in Macaulay2 and we provide several examples. We also discuss extensions of these results to Young subgroups of $S_n$.

On stacky surfaces and noncommutative surfaces

Let $\mathbf{k}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $\geq 7$ or zero. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a tame order of global dimension $2$ over a normal surface $X$ over $\mathbf{k}$ such that $\operatorname{Z}(\mathcal{A})=\mathcal{O}_{X}$ is locally a direct summand of $\mathcal{A}$. We prove that there is a $\mu_N$-gerbe $\mathcal{X}$ over a smooth tame algebraic stack whose generic stabilizer is trivial, with coarse space $X$ such that the category of 1-twisted coherent sheaves on $\mathcal{X}$ is equivalent to the category of coherent sheaves of modules on $\mathcal{A}$. Moreover, the stack $\mathcal{X}$ is constructed explicitly through a sequence of root stacks, canonical stacks, and gerbes. This extends results of Reiten and Van den Bergh to finite characteristic and the global situation. As applications, in characteristic $0$ we prove that such orders are geometric noncommutative schemes in the sense of Orlov, and we study relations with Hochschild cohomology and Connes' convolution algebra.

Classification of singularities of cluster algebras of finite type: the case of trivial coefficients

We provide a complete classification of the singularities of cluster algebras of finite type with trivial coefficients. Alongside, we develop a constructive desingularization of these singularities via blowups in regular centers over fields of arbitrary characteristic. Furthermore, from the same perspective, we study a family of cluster algebras which are not of finite type and which arise from a star shaped quiver.

Cluster structures for the $A_{\infty}$ singularity

We study a category $\mathcal{C}_2$ of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded MCM modules over the $A_\infty$ curve singularity and demonstrate it has infinite type $A$ cluster combinatorics. In particular, we show that this Frobenius category (or a suitable subcategory) is stably equivalent to the infinite type $A$ cluster categories of Holm-Jorgensen, Fisher and Paquette-Yildirim. As a consequence, $\mathcal{C}_2$ has cluster tilting subcategories modelled by certain triangulations of the (completed) $\infty$-gon. We use the Frobenius structure to extend this further to consider maximal almost rigid subcategories, and show that these subcategories and their mutations exhibit the combinatorics of the completed $\infty$-gon.

McKay quivers and Lusztig algebras of some finite groups

We are interested in the McKay quiver $Γ(G)$ and skew group rings $A*G$, where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$, where $V$ is a finite dimensional vector space over a field $K$, and $A$ is a $K-G$-algebra. These skew group rings appear in Auslander's version of the McKay correspondence. In the first part of this paper we consider complex reflection groups $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$ and find a combinatorial method, making use of Young diagrams, to construct the McKay quivers for the groups $G(r,p,n)$. We first look at the case $G(1,1,n)$, which is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$, followed by $G(r,1,n)$ for $r >1$. Then, using Clifford theory, we can determine the McKay quiver for any $G(r,p,n)$ and thus for all finite irreducible complex reflection groups up to finitely many exceptions. In the second part of the paper we consider a more conceptual approach to McKay quivers of arbitrary finite groups: we define the Lusztig algebra $\widetilde A(G)$ of a finite group $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$, which is Morita equivalent to the skew group ring $A*G$. This description gives us an embedding of the basic algebra Morita equivalent to $A*G$ into a matrix algebra over $A$.

Canonical Resolutions over Koszul Algebras

We generalize Buchsbaum and Eisenbud's resolutions for the powers of the maximal ideal of a polynomial ring to resolve powers of the homogeneous maximal ideal over graded Koszul algebras. Our approach has the advantage of producing resolutions that are both more explicit and minimal compared to those previously discovered by Green and Mart\'ınez-Villa \cite{GreenMartinezVilla} or Mart\'ınez-Villa and Zacharia \cite{MartinezVillaZacharia}.

Friezes satisfying higher SL$_k$-determinants

In this article, we construct SL$_k$-friezes using Plücker coordinates, making use of the cluster structure on the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian of $k$-spaces in $n$-space via the Plücker embedding. When this cluster algebra is of finite type, the SL$_k$-friezes are in bijection with the so-called mesh friezes of the corresponding Grassmannian cluster category. These are collections of positive integers on the AR-quiver of the category with relations inherited from the mesh relations on the category. In these finite type cases, many of the SL$_k$-friezes arise from specialising a cluster to 1. These are called unitary. We use Iyama-Yoshino reduction to analyse the non-unitary friezes. With this, we provide an explanation for all known friezes of this kind. An appendix by Cuntz and Plamondon proves that there are 868 friezes of type $E_6$.

A McKay correspondence for reflection groups

We construct a noncommutative desingularization of the discriminant of a finite reflection group $G$ as a quotient of the skew group ring $A=S*G$. If $G$ is generated by order two reflections, then this quotient identifies with the endomorphism ring of the reflection arrangement $\mathcal{A}(G)$ viewed as a module over the coordinate ring $S^G/(Δ)$ of the discriminant of $G$. This yields, in particular, a correspondence between the nontrivial irreducible representations of $G$ to certain maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules over the coordinate ring $S^G/(Δ)$. These maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules are precisely the nonisomorphic direct summands of the coordinate ring of the reflection arrangement $\mathcal{A} (G)$ viewed as a module over $S^G/(Δ)$. We identify some of the corresponding matrix factorizations, namely the so-called logarithmic (co-)residues of the discriminant.

Trace ideals, normalization chains, and endomorphism rings

In this paper we consider reduced (non-normal) commutative noetherian rings $R$. With the help of conductor ideals and trace ideals of certain $R$-modules we deduce a criterion for a reflexive $R$-module to be closed under multiplication with scalars in an integral extension of $R$. Using results of Greuel and Knörrer this yields a characterization of plane curves of finite Cohen--Macaulay type in terms of trace ideals. Further, we study one-dimensional local rings $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ such that that their normalization is isomorphic to the endomorphism ring $\mathrm{End}_R(\mathfrak{m})$: we give a criterion for this property in terms of the conductor ideal, and show that these rings are nearly Gorenstein. Moreover, using Grauert--Remmert normalization chains, we show the existence of noncommutative resolutions of singularities of low global dimensions for curve singularities.

Non-Commutative Resolutions of Toric Varieties

Let $R$ be the coordinate ring of an affine toric variety. We show that the endomorphism ring $End_R(\mathbb A),$ where $\mathbb A$ is the (finite) direct sum of all (isomorphism classes of) conic $R$-modules, has finite global dimension. Furthermore, we show that $End_R(\mathbb A)$ is a non-commutative crepant resolution if and only if the toric variety is simplicial. For toric varieties over a perfect field $k$ of prime characteristic, we show that the ring of differential operators $D_\mathsf{k}(R)$ has finite global dimension.
