Focus topics for the ECFA study on Higgs / Top / EW factories

In order to stimulate new engagement and trigger some concrete studies in areas where further work would be beneficial towards fully understanding the physics potential of an $e^+e^-$ Higgs / Top / Electroweak factory, we propose to define a set of focus topics. The general reasoning and the proposed topics are described in this document.

The Road Ahead for CODEX-b

In this Snowmass contribution we present a comprehensive status update on the progress and plans for the proposed CODEX-b detector, intended to search for long-lived particles beyond the Standard Model. We review the physics case for the proposal and present recent progress on optimization strategies for the detector and shielding design, as well as the development of new fast and full simulation frameworks. A summary of the technical design for a smaller demonstrator detector (CODEX-$β$) for the upcoming Run~3 of the LHC is also discussed, alongside the road towards realization of the full experiment at the High-Luminosity LHC.

Expression of Interest for the CODEX-b Detector

This document presents the physics case and ancillary studies for the proposed CODEX-b long-lived particle (LLP) detector, as well as for a smaller proof-of-concept demonstrator detector, CODEX-$β$, to be operated during Run 3 of the LHC. Our development of the CODEX-b physics case synthesizes `top-down' and `bottom-up' theoretical approaches, providing a detailed survey of both minimal and complete models featuring LLPs. Several of these models have not been studied previously, and for some others we amend studies from previous literature: In particular, for gluon and fermion-coupled axion-like particles. We moreover present updated simulations of expected backgrounds in CODEX-b's actively shielded environment, including the effects of shielding propagation uncertainties, high-energy tails and variation in the shielding design. Initial results are also included from a background measurement and calibration campaign. A design overview is presented for the CODEX-$β$ demonstrator detector, which will enable background calibration and detector design studies. Finally, we lay out brief studies of various design drivers of the CODEX-b experiment and potential extensions of the baseline design, including the physics case for a calorimeter element, precision timing, event tagging within LHCb, and precision low-momentum tracking.

The time-dependent $CP$ asymmetry in $B^0 \to K_{\rm res} γ\to π^+ π^- K^0_{\scriptscriptstyle S} γ$ decays

The time-dependent $CP$ asymmetry in $B^0 \to K_{\rm res} γ\to π^+ π^- K^0_{\scriptscriptstyle S} γ$ is sensitive to the photon polarisation in the quark level process $b \to s γ$. While this polarisation is predominantly left-handed in the standard model, it could be modified by the existence of new physics contributions that may possess different $CP$ properties. In this paper, we derive the $CP$ violation formulae for $B^0 \to K_{\rm res} γ\to π^+ π^- K^0_{\scriptscriptstyle S} γ$ including the most dominant intermediate states. We propose a new observable that could be measured in a time-dependent amplitude analysis of $B^0 \to π^+ π^- K^0_{\scriptscriptstyle S} γ$ decays, providing a stringent contraint on the photon polarisation. We discuss the future prospects for obtaining such constraints from measurements at Belle II and LHCb.

Extraction of the CKM phase $γ$ using charmless 3-body decays of $B$ mesons

The weak phase $γ$ is extracted from three-body charmless decays of $B$ mesons following a method proposed by Bhattacharya, Imbeault \& London. The result is obtained by combining the BABAR amplitude analyses for the processes $B^0 \rightarrow K^+ π^0 π^-$, $B^0 \rightarrow K_S^0 π^+ π^-$, $B^0 \rightarrow K_S^0 K_S^0 K_S^0$, $B^0 \rightarrow K^+ K_S^0 K^-$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ π^+ π^-$, under the assumption of $α_{\rm{SU(3)}}$ flavour symmetry. Six possible solutions are found. One solution is compatible with the Standard Model while the others are not. It is also found that, when averaged over the entire Dalitz plane, the effect of $α_{\rm{SU(3)}}$ breaking on the analysis is only at the percent level.

JFIT: a framework to obtain combined experimental results through joint fits

A master-worker architecture is presented for obtaining combined experimental results through joint fits of datasets from several experiments. The design of the architecture allows such joint fits to be performed keeping the data separated, in its original format, and using independent fitting environments. This allows the benefits of joint fits, such as ensuring that correlations are correctly taken into account and better determination of nuisance parameters, to be harnessed without the need to reformat data samples or to rewrite existing fitting code. The Jfit framework is a C++ implementation of this idea in the Laura++ package, using dedicated classes of the ROOT package. We present the Jfit framework, give instructions for its use, and demonstrate its functionalities with concrete examples.

Hadronisation at LEP

An overview of recent results from LEP concerning the hadronisation process is presented. Emphasis is placed on the $b$-quark. The first presented analysis is the measurement of the $b$-quark fragmentation function. It includes a new, hadronic-model independent method to extract the x-dependence of the non-perturbative QCD component from the measured fragmentation function. This is followed by the results of two analyses on, respectively, production rates of b-excited states and branching fractions of b-quarks to neutral and charged b-hadrons. Multiplicity in the final state is also discussed concerning the difference in multiplicities between b and light quark initiated events, and total multiplicities in three jet events. Finally, recent measurements of ωand ηmeson production rates are given.
