WAP Systems and Labeled Subshifts

The main object of this work is to present a powerful method of construction of subshifts which we use chiefly to construct WAP systems with various properties. Among many other applications of this so called labeled subshifts, we obtain examples of null as well as non-null WAP subshifts, WAP subshifts of arbitrary countable (Birkhoff) height, and completely scrambled WAP systems of arbitrary countable height. We also construct LE but not HAE subshifts, and recurrent non-tame subshifts.

Eventual nonsensitivity and tame dynamical systems

In this paper we characterize tame dynamical systems and functions in terms of eventual non-sensitivity and eventual fragmentability. As a notable application we obtain a neat characterization of tame subshifts $X \subset \{0,1\}^{\mathbb Z}$: for every infinite subset $L \subseteq {\mathbb Z}$ there exists an infinite subset $K \subseteq L$ such that $π_{K}(X)$ is a countable subset of $\{0,1\}^K$. The notion of eventual fragmentability is one of the properties we encounter which indicate some "smallness" of a family. We investigate a "smallness hierarchy" for families of continuous functions on compact dynamical systems, and link the existence of a "small" family which separates points of a dynamical system $(G,X)$ to the representability of $X$ on "good" Banach spaces. For example, for metric dynamical systems the property of admitting a separating family which is eventually fragmented is equivalent to being tame. We give some sufficient conditions for coding functions to be tame and, among other applications, show that certain multidimensional analogues of Sturmian sequences are tame. We also show that linearly ordered dynamical systems are tame and discuss examples where some universal dynamical systems associated with certain Polish groups are tame.

Circularly ordered dynamical systems

We study topological properties of circularly ordered dynamical systems and prove that every such system is representable on a Rosenthal Banach space, hence, is also tame. We derive some consequences for topological groups. We show that several Sturmian like symbolic $\mathbb{Z}^k$-systems are circularly ordered. Using some old results we characterize circularly ordered minimal cascades.

Short proofs of theorems of Malyutin and Margulis

The Ghys-Margulis alternative asserts that a subgroup $G$ of homeomorphisms of the circle which does not contain a free subgroup on two generators must admit an invariant probability measure. Malyutin's theorem classifies minimal actions of $G$. We present a short proof of Malyutin's theorem and then deduce Margulis' theorem which confirms the G-M alternative. The basic ideas are borrowed from the original work of Malyutin but the use of the apparatus of the enveloping semigroup enables us to shorten the proof considerably.

Affinely prime dynamical systems

We study representations of groups by "affine" automorphisms of compact, convex spaces, with special focus on "irreducible" representations: equivalently "minimal" actions. When the group in question is PSL(2,R), we exhibit a one-one correspondence between bounded harmonic functions on the upper half-plane and a certain class of irreducible representations. Our analysis shows that, surprisingly, all these representations are equivalent. In fact we find that all irreducible affine representations of this group are equivalent. The key to this is a property we call "linear Stone-Weierstrass" for group actions on compact spaces, which, if it holds for the "universal strongly proximal space" of the group (to be defined) then the induced action on the space of probability measures on this space is the unique irreducible affine representation of the group.

Is there a Ramsey-Hindman theorem ?

We show that there does not exist a joint generalization of the theorems of Ramsey and Hindman, or more explicitly, that the property of containing a symmetric IP-set is not divisible.

On doubly minimal systems and a question regarding product recurrence

We show that a doubly minimal system $X$ has the property that for every minimal system $Y$ the orbit closure of any pair $(y,x) \in Y \times X$ is either $Y \times X$ or it has the form $Γ_π= \{(π(x),x) : x \in X\}$ for some factor map $π: X \to Y$. As a corollary we resolve a problem of Haddad and Ott from 2008 regarding product recurrence.

Isomorphic extensions and applications

If $π:(X,T)\to(Z,S)$ is a topological factor map between uniquely ergodic topological dynamical systems, then $(X,T)$ is called an isomorphic extension of $(Z,S)$ if $π$ is also a measure-theoretic isomorphism. We consider the case when the systems are minimal and we pay special attention to equicontinuous $(Z,S)$. We first establish a characterization of this type of isomorphic extensions in terms of mean equicontinuity, and then show that an isomorphic extension need not be almost one-to-one, answering questions of Li, Tu and Ye.

Weak mixing properties for nonsingular actions

For a general group G we consider various weak mixing properties of nonsingular actions. In the case where the action is actually measure preserving all these properties coincide, and our purpose here is to check which implications persist in the nonsingular case.

A universal hypercyclic representation

For any countable group, and also for any locally compact second countable, compactly generated topological group, G, we show the existence of a "universal" hypercyclic (i.e. topologically transitive) representation on a Hilbert space, in the sense that it simultaneously models every possible ergodic probability measure preserving free action of G.

Uniformly recurrent subgroups

We define the notion of uniformly recurrent subgroup, URS in short, which is a topological analog of the notion of invariant random subgroup (IRS), introduced in a work of M. Abert, Y. Glasner and B. Virag. Our main results are as follows. (i) It was shown by B. Weiss that for an arbitrary countable infinite group G, any free ergodic probability measure preserving G-system admits a minimal model. In contrast we show here, using URS's, that for the lamplighter group there is an ergodic measure preserving action which does not admit a minimal model. (ii) For an arbitrary countable group G, every URS can be realized as the stability system of some topologically transitive G-system.

Banach representations and affine compactifications of dynamical systems

To every Banach space V we associate a compact right topological affine semigroup E(V). We show that a separable Banach space V is Asplund if and only if E(V) is metrizable, and it is Rosenthal (i.e. it does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$) if and only if E(V) is a Rosenthal compactum. We study representations of compact right topological semigroups in E(V). In particular, representations of tame and HNS-semigroups arise naturally as enveloping semigroups of tame and HNS (hereditarily non-sensitive) dynamical systems, respectively. As an application we obtain a generalization of a theorem of R. Ellis. A main theme of our investigation is the relationship between the enveloping semigroup of a dynamical system X and the enveloping semigroup of its various affine compactifications Q(X). When the two coincide we say that the affine compactification Q(X) is E-compatible. This is a refinement of the notion of injectivity. We show that distal non-equicontinuous systems do not admit any E-compatible compactification. We present several new examples of non-injective dynamical systems and examine the relationship between injectivity and E-compatibility.

Hypercyclic operators, Gauss measures and Polish dynamical systems

In this work we consider hypercyclic operators as a special case of Polish dynamical systems. In the first section we analyze the construction of Bayart and Grivaux of a hypercyclic operator which preserves a Gaussian measure, and derive a description of the maximal spectral type of the Koopman operator associated to the corresponding measure preserving dynamical system. We then use this information to show the existence of a mildly but not strongly mixing hypercyclic operator on Hilbert space. In the last two sections we study hypercyclic and frequently hypecyclic operators which, as Polish dynamical systems are, M-systems, E-systems, and syndetically transitive systems.

Minimal hyperspace actions of homeomorphism groups of h-homogeneous spaces

Let X be a h-homogeneous zero-dimensional compact Hausdorff space, i.e. X is a Stone dual of a homogeneous Boolean algebra. Using the dual Ramsey theorem and a detailed combinatorial analysis of what we call stable collections of subsets of a finite set, we obtain a complete list of the minimal sub-systems of the compact dynamical system (Exp(Exp(X)),Homeo(X)), where Exp(X) stands for the hyperspace comprising the closed subsets of X equipped with the Vietoris topology. The importance of this dynamical system stems from Uspenskij's characterization of the universal ambit of G = Homeo(X). The results apply to X = C the Cantor set, the generalized Cantor sets X = {0,1}^kappa for non-countable cardinals kappa, and to several other spaces. A particular interesting case is X = beta(omega) \ omega, where beta(omega) denotes the Stone-Cech compactification of the natural numbers. This space, called the corona or the remainder of omega, has been extensively studied in the fields of set theory and topology.

Three Zutot

Three topics in dynamical systems are discussed. In the first two sections we solve some open problems concerning, respectively, Furstenberg entropy of stationary dynamical systems, and uniformly rigid actions admitting a weakly mixing fully supported invariant probability measure. In the third section we provide a new example that displays some unexpected properties of strictly ergodic actions of non-amenable groups.

Extensions of Cantor minimal systems and dimension groups

Given a factor map $p : (X,T) \to (Y,S)$ of Cantor minimal systems, we study the relations between the dimension groups of the two systems. First, we interpret the torsion subgroup of the quotient of the dimension groups $K_0(X)/K_0(Y)$ in terms of intermediate extensions which are extensions of $(Y,S)$ by a compact abelian group. Then we show that, by contrast, the existence of an intermediate non-abelian finite group extension can produce a situation where the dimension group of $(Y,S)$ embeds into a proper subgroup of the dimension group of $(X,T)$, yet the quotient of the dimension groups is nonetheless torsion free. Next we define higher order cohomology groups $H^n(X \mid Y)$ associated to an extension, and study them in various cases (proximal extensions, extensions by, not necessarily abelian, finite groups, etc.). Our main result here is that all the cohomology groups $H^n(X \mid Y)$ are torsion groups. As a consequence we can now identify $H^0(X \mid Y)$ as the torsion group of $ K_0(X)/K_0(Y)$.
