Quantization, dequantization, and distinguished states

Geometric quantization is a natural way to construct quantum models starting from classical data. In this work, we start from a symplectic vector space with an inner product and -- using techniques of geometric quantization -- construct the quantum algebra and equip it with a distinguished state. We compare our result with the construction due to Sorkin -- which starts from the same input data -- and show that our distinguished state coincides with the Sorkin-Johnson state. Sorkin's construction was originally applied to the free scalar field over a causal set (locally finite, partially ordered set). Our perspective suggests a natural generalization to less linear examples, such as an interacting field.

Operations on the Hochschild Bicomplex of a Diagram of Algebras

A diagram of algebras is a functor valued in a category of associative algebras. I construct an operad acting on the Hochschild bicomplex of a diagram of algebras. Using this operad, I give a direct proof that the Hochschild cohomology of a diagram of algebras is a Gerstenhaber algebra. I also show that the total complex is an $L_\infty$-algebra. The same results are true for the reduced and asimplicial subcomplexes and asimplicial cohomology. This structure governs deformations of diagrams of algebras through the Maurer-Cartan equation.

A novel class of functionals for perturbative algebraic quantum field theory

Perturbative Algebraic Quantum Field Theory (pAQFT) is based upon formal power series valued in spaces of functionals. This is usually done with microcausal functionals, which are defined using microlocal analysis and motivated by propagation of singularities. In this paper, we prove that the class of microcausal functionals is not closed under the Peierls (Poisson) bracket by showing that a Peierls bracket of regular functionals can fail to be smooth. Consequently, microcausal functionals are not a suitable basis for pAQFT. To remedy this issue, we introduce the class of equicausal functionals. We show that this class contains the local functionals and that it closes under the star-product and Peierls bracket. Furthermore, we prove the time-slice axiom for equicausal functionals, using a chain homotopy. The class of microcausal functionals is not closed under this chain homotopy, which strongly suggests that the class of microcausal functionals does not fulfill the time slice axiom.

Local Structure of Sprinkled Causal Sets

We describe numerical and analytical investigations of causal sets sprinkled into spacetime manifolds. The first part of the paper is a numerical study of finite causal sets sprinkled into Alexandrov subsets of Minkowski spacetime of dimensions $1 + 1$, $1 + 2$ and $1 + 3$. In particular we consider the rank 2 past of sprinkled causet events, which is the set of events that are two links to the past. Assigning one of the rank 2 past events as `preferred past' for each event yields a `preferred past structure', which was recently proposed as the basis for a causal set d'Alembertian. We test six criteria for selecting rank 2 past subsets. One criterion performs particularly well at uniquely selecting -- with very high probability -- a preferred past satisfying desirable properties. The second part of the paper concerns (infinite) sprinkled causal sets for general spacetime manifolds. After reviewing the construction of the sprinkling process with the Poisson measure, we consider various specific applications. Among other things, we compute the probability of obtaining a sprinkled causal set of a given isomorphism class by combinatorial means, using a correspondence between causal sets in Alexandrov subsets of $1 + 1$ dimensional Minkowski spacetime and 2D-orders. These methods are also used to compute the expected size of the past infinity as a proportion of the total size of a sprinkled causal set.

The Star Product in Interacting Quantum Field Theory

We propose a new formula for the star product in deformation quantization of Poisson structures related in a specific way to a variational problem for a function $S$, interpreted as the action functional. Our approach is motivated by perturbative Algebraic Quantum Field Theory (pAQFT). We provide a direct combinatorial formula for the star product and we show that it can be applied to a certain class of infinite dimensional manifolds (e.g., regular observables in pAQFT). This is the first step towards understanding how pAQFT can be formulated such that the only formal parameter is $\hbar$, while the coupling constant can be treated as a number. In the introductory part of the paper, apart from reviewing the framework, we make precise several statements present in the pAQFT literature and recast these in the language of (formal) deformation quantization. Finally, we use our formalism to streamline the proof of perturbative agreement provided by Drago, Hack, and Pinamonti and to generalize some of the results obtained in that work to the case of a non-linear interaction.

Switch Functions

We define a switch function to be a function from an interval to $\{1,-1\}$ with a finite number of sign changes. (Special cases are the Walsh functions.) By a topological argument, we prove that, given $n$ real-valued functions, $f_1, \dots, f_n$, in $L^1[0,1]$, there exists a switch function, $σ$, with at most $n$ sign changes that is simultaneously orthogonal to all of them in the sense that $\int_0^1 σ(t)f_i(t)dt=0$, for all $i = 1, \dots , n$. Moreover, we prove that, for each $λ\in (-1,1)$, there exists a unique switch function, $σ$, with $n$ switches such that $\int_0^1 σ(t) p(t) dt = λ\int_0^1 p(t)dt$ for every real polynomial $p$ of degree at most $n-1$. We also prove the same statement holds for every real even polynomial of degree at most $2n-2$. Furthermore, for each of these latter results, we write down, in terms of $λ$ and $n$, a degree $n$ polynomial whose roots are the switch points of $σ$; we are thereby able to compute these switch functions.

A Cohomological Perspective on Algebraic Quantum Field Theory

Algebraic quantum field theory is considered from the perspective of the Hochschild cohomology bicomplex. This is a framework for studying deformations and symmetries. Deformation is a possible approach to the fundamental challenge of constructing interacting QFT models. Symmetry is the primary tool for understanding the structure and properties of a QFT model. This perspective leads to a generalization of the algebraic quantum field theory framework, as well as a more general definition of symmetry. This means that some models may have symmetries that were not previously recognized or exploited. To first order, a deformation of a QFT model is described by a Hochschild cohomology class. A deformation could, for example, correspond to adding an interaction term to a Lagrangian. The cohomology class for such an interaction is computed here. However, the result is more general and does not require the undeformed model to be constructed from a Lagrangian. This computation leads to a more concrete version of the construction of perturbative algebraic quantum field theory.

Quantization of Planck's Constant

This paper is about the role of Planck's constant, $\hbar$, in the geometric quantization of Poisson manifolds using symplectic groupoids. In order to construct a strict deformation quantization of a given Poisson manifold, one can use all possible rescalings of the Poisson structure, which can be combined into a single "Heisenberg-Poisson" manifold. The new coordinate on this manifold is identified with $\hbar$. I present an explicit construction for a symplectic groupoid integrating a Heisenberg-Poisson manifold and discuss its geometric quantization. I show that in cases where $\hbar$ cannot take arbitrary values, this is enforced by Bohr-Sommerfeld conditions in geometric quantization. A Heisenberg-Poisson manifold is defined by linearly rescaling the Poisson structure, so I also discuss nonlinear variations and give an example of quantization of a nonintegrable Poisson manifold using a presymplectic groupoid. In appendices, I construct symplectic groupoids integrating a more general class of Heisenberg-Poisson manifolds constructed from Jacobi manifolds and discuss the parabolic tangent groupoid.

Deformation Quantization and Irrational Numbers

Diophantine approximation is the problem of approximating a real number by rational numbers. We propose a version of this in which the numerators are approximately related to the denominators by a Laurent polynomial. Our definition is motivated by the problem of constructing strict deformation quantizations of symplectic manifolds. We show that this type of approximation exists for any real number and also investigate what happens if the number is rational or a quadratic irrational.

A Groupoid Approach to Quantization

Many interesting C*-algebras can be viewed as quantizations of Poisson manifolds. I propose that a Poisson manifold may be quantized by a twisted polarized convolution C*-algebra of a symplectic groupoid. Toward this end, I define polarizations for Lie groupoids and sketch the construction of this algebra. A large number of examples show that this idea unifies previous geometric constructions, including geometric quantization of symplectic manifolds and the C*-algebra of a Lie groupoid.

An Obstruction to Quantization of the Sphere

In the standard example of strict deformation quantization of the symplectic sphere $S^2$, the set of allowed values of the quantization parameter $\hbar$ is not connected; indeed, it is almost discrete. Li recently constructed a class of examples (including $S^2$) in which $\hbar$ can take any value in an interval, but these examples are badly behaved. Here, I identify a natural additional axiom for strict deformation quantization and prove that it implies that the parameter set for quantizing $S^2$ is never connected.

The Structure of Noncommutative Deformations

Noncommutatively deformed geometries, such as the noncommutative torus, do not exist generically. I showed in a previous paper that the existence of such a deformation implies compatibility conditions between the classical metric and the Poisson bivector (which characterizes the noncommutativity). Here I present another necessary condition: the vanishing of a certain rank 5 tensor. In the case of a compact Riemannian manifold, I use these conditions to prove that the Poisson bivector can be constructed locally from commuting Killing vectors.

Noncommutative Rigidity

Using very weak criteria for what may constitute a noncommutative geometry, I show that a pseudo-Riemannian manifold can only be smoothly deformed into noncommutative geometries if certain geometric obstructions vanish. These obstructions can be expressed as a system of partial differential equations relating the metric and the Poisson structure that describes the noncommutativity. I illustrate this by computing the obstructions for well known examples of noncommutative geometries and quantum groups. These rigid conditions may cast doubt on the idea of noncommutatively deformed space-time.

Evolution in Quantum Causal Histories

We provide a precise definition and analysis of quantum causal histories (QCH). A QCH consists of a discrete, locally finite, causal pre-spacetime with matrix algebras encoding the quantum structure at each event. The evolution of quantum states and observables is described by completely positive maps between the algebras at causally related events. We show that this local description of evolution is sufficient and that unitary evolution can be recovered wherever it should actually be expected. This formalism may describe a quantum cosmology without an assumption of global hyperbolicity; it is thus more general than the Wheeler-DeWitt approach. The structure of a QCH is also closely related to quantum information theory and algebraic quantum field theory on a causal set.

Quantization of Multiply Connected Manifolds

The standard (Berezin-Toeplitz) geometric quantization of a compact Kaehler manifold is restricted by integrality conditions. These restrictions can be circumvented by passing to the universal covering space, provided that the lift of the symplectic form is exact. I relate this construction to the Baum-Connes assembly map and prove that it gives a strict quantization of the manifold. I also propose a further generalization, classify the required structure, and provide a means of computing the resulting algebras. These constructions involve twisted group C*-algebras of the fundamental group which are determined by a group cocycle constructed from the cohomology class of the symplectic form.

Fredholm Modules for Quantum Euclidean Spheres

The quantum Euclidean spheres, $S_q^{N-1}$, are (noncommutative) homogeneous spaces of quantum orthogonal groups, $\SO_q(N)$. The *-algebra $A(S^{N-1}_q)$ of polynomial functions on each of these is given by generators and relations which can be expressed in terms of a self-adjoint, unipotent matrix. We explicitly construct complete sets of generators for the K-theory (by nontrivial self-adjoint idempotents and unitaries) and the K-homology (by nontrivial Fredholm modules) of the spheres $S_q^{N-1}$. We also construct the corresponding Chern characters in cyclic homology and cohomology and compute the pairing of K-theory with K-homology. On odd spheres (i. e., for N even) we exhibit unbounded Fredholm modules by means of a natural unbounded operator D which, while failing to have compact resolvent, has bounded commutators with all elements in the algebra $A(S^{N-1}_q)$.

Geometric Quantization of Vector Bundles

I repeat my definition for quantization of a vector bundle. For the case of Toeplitz and geometric quantization of a compact Kaehler Manifold, I give a construction for quantizing any smooth vector bundle which depends functorially on a choice of connection on the bundle.

Noncommutative Regularization for the Practical Man

It has been proposed that the noncommutative geometry of the "fuzzy" 2-sphere provides a nonperturbative regularization of scalar field theories. This generalizes to compact Kaehler manifolds where simple field theories are regularized by the geometric quantization of the manifold. In order to permit actual calculations and the comparison with other regularizations, I describe the perturbation theory of these regularized models and propose an approximation technique for evaluation of the Feynman diagrams. I present example calculations of the simplest diagrams for the $ϕ^4$ model on the 2-sphere, a 2-sphere times a 2-sphere, and 2-dimensional complex projective space. This regularization fails for noncompact spaces; I give a brief dimensional analysis argument as to why this is so. I also discuss the relevance of the topology of Feynman diagrams to their ultra-violet and infra-red divergence behavior in this model.
