On fixed points of self maps of the free ball

In this paper, we study the structure of the fixed point sets of noncommutative self maps of the free ball. We show that for such a map that fixes the origin the fixed point set on every level is the intersection of the ball with a linear subspace. We provide an application for the completely isometric isomorphism problem of multiplier algebras of noncommutative complete Pick spaces.

Nevanlinna-Pick Families and Singular Rational Varieties

The goal of this note is to apply ideas from commutative algebra (a.k.a. affine algebraic geometry) to the question of constrained Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation. More precisely, we consider subalgebras $A \subset \mathbb{C}[z_1,\ldots,z_d]$, such that the map from the affine space to the spectrum of $A$ is an isomorphism except for finitely many points. Letting $\mathfrak{A}$ be the weak-$*$ closure of $A$ in $\mathcal{M}_d$ -- the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space. We provide a parametrization for the Nevanlinna-Pick family of $M_k(\mathfrak{A})$ for $k \geq 1$. In particular, when $k=1$ the parameter space for the Nevanlinna-Pick family is the Picard group of $A$.

Real Fibered Morphisms and Ulrich Sheaves

In this paper we define and study real fibered morphisms. Such morphisms arise in the study of real hyperbolic hypersurfaces in projective space and other hyperbolic varieties. We show that real fibered morphisms are intimately connected to Ulrich sheaves admitting positive definite symmetric bilinear forms.

Algebras of bounded noncommutative analytic functions on subvarieties of the noncommutative unit ball

We study algebras of bounded, noncommutative (nc) analytic functions on nc subvarieties of the nc unit ball. Given a nc variety $\mathfrak{V}$ in the nc unit ball $\mathfrak{B}_d$, we identify the algebra of bounded analytic functions on $\mathfrak{V}$ --- denoted $H^\infty(\mathfrak{V})$ --- as the multiplier algebra $\operatorname{Mult} \mathcal{H}_{\mathfrak{V}}$ of a certain reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_{\mathfrak{V}}$ consisting of nc functions on $\mathfrak{V}$. We find that every such algebra $H^\infty(\mathfrak{V})$ is completely isometrically isomorphic to the quotient $H^\infty(\mathfrak{B}_d)/ \mathcal{J}_{\mathfrak{V}}$ of the algebra of bounded nc holomorphic functions on the ball by the ideal $\mathcal{J}_{\mathfrak{V}}$ of bounded nc holomorphic functions which vanish on $\mathfrak{V}$. We investigate the problem of when two algebras $H^\infty(\mathfrak{V})$ and $H^\infty(\mathfrak{W})$ are isometrically isomorphic. If the variety $\mathfrak{W}$ is the image of $\mathfrak{V}$ under a nc analytic automorphism of $\mathfrak{B}_d$, then $H^\infty(\mathfrak{V})$ and $H^\infty(\mathfrak{W})$ are (completely) isometrically isometric. We prove that the converse holds in the case where the varieties are homogeneous; in general we can only show that if the algebras are isometrically isomorphic, then there must be nc holomorphic maps between the varieties. Along the way we are led to consider some interesting problems on function theory in the nc unit ball. For example, we study various versions of the Nullstellensatz (that is, the problem of to what extent an ideal is determined by its zero set), and we obtain perfect Nullstellensatz in both the homogeneous as well as the commutative cases. We also consider similar problems regarding the bounded analytic functions that extend continuously to the boundary of $\mathfrak{B}_d$.

Representations of Lie Algebras by non-Skewselfadjoint Operators in Hilbert Space

We study non-selfadjoint representations of a finite dimensional real Lie algebra $\fg$. To this end we embed a non-selfadjoint representation of $\fg$ into a more complicated structure, that we call a $\fg$-operator vessel and that is associated to an overdetermined linear conservative input/state/output system on the corresponding simply connected Lie group $\fG$. We develop the frequency domain theory of the system in terms of representations of $\fG$, and introduce the joint characteristic function of a $\fg$-operator vessel which is the analogue of the classical notion of the characteristic function of a single non-selfadjoint operator. As the first non-commutative example, we apply the theory to the Lie algebra of the $ax+b$ group, the group of affine transformations of the line.

Dilations of Semigroups of Contractions through Vessels

Let $A_1,\ldots,A_d$ be a $d$-tuple of commuting dissipative operators on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Using the theory of operator vessels and their associated systems, we give a construction of a dilation of the multi-parameter semigroup of contractions on $\mathcal{H}$ given by $e^{i \sum_{j=1}^d t_j A_j}$.

On algebraic fusions of association schemes

We give a complete description of the irreducible representations of algebraic fusions of association schemes, in terms of the irreducible representations of a Schur cover of the corresponding group of algebraic automorphisms.

Livsic-type Determinantal Representations and Hyperbolicity

Hyperbolic homogeneous polynomials with real coefficients, i.e., hyperbolic real projective hypersurfaces, and their determinantal representations, play a key role in the emerging field of convex algebraic geometry. In this paper we consider a natural notion of hyperbolicity for a real subvariety $X \subset \mathbb{P}^d$ of an arbitrary codimension $\ell$ with respect to a real $\ell - 1$-dimensional linear subspace $V \subset \mathbb{P}^d$ and study its basic properties. We also consider a special kind of determinantal representations that we call Livsic-type and a nice subclass of these that we call \vr{}. Much like in the case of hypersurfaces ($\ell=1$), the existence of a definite Hermitian \vr{} Livsic-type determinantal representation implies hyperbolicity. We show that every curve admits a \vr{} Livsic-type determinantal representation. Our basic tools are Cauchy kernels for line bundles and the notion of the Bezoutian for two meromorphic functions on a compact Riemann surface that we introduce. We then proceed to show that every real curve in $\mathbb{P}^d$ hyperbolic with respect to some real $d-2$-dimensional linear subspace admits a definite Hermitian, or even real symmetric, \vr{} Livsic-type determinantal representation.
