Nondegenerate actions on Hilbert C*-modules

Let X be a (right) Hilbert C*-module and let B be a C*-algebra acting on X from the left via adjointable operators. In this note we establish the equivalence of two notions of nondegeneracy for such an action of B on X. Furthermore, we explain how techniques from an earlier paper of Kim can be used to give a short proof of a recent result of Dessi, Kakariadis and Paraskevas.

Stable isomorphisms of operator algebras

Let $\A$ and $\B$ be operator algebras with $c_0$-isomorphic diagonals and let $\K$ denote the compact operators. We show that if $\A\otimes\K$ and $\B\otimes\K$ are isometrically isomorphic, then $\A$ and $\B$ are isometrically isomorphic. If the algebras $\A$ and $\B$ satisfy an extra analyticity condition a similar result holds with $\K$ being replaced by any operator algebra containing the compact operators. For non-selfadjoint graph algebras this implies that the graph is a complete invariant for various types of isomorphisms, including stable isomorphisms, thus strengthening a recent result of Dor-On, Eilers and Geffen. Similar results are proven for algebras whose diagonals satisfy cancellation and have $K_0$-groups isomorphic to $\bbZ$. This has implications in the study of stable isomorphisms between various semicrossed products.

Fell's absorption principle for semigroup operator algebras

Fell's absorption principle states that the left regular representation of a group absorbs any unitary representation of the group when tensored with it. In a weakened form, this result carries over to the left regular representation of a right LCM submonoid of a group and its Nica covariant isometric representations but it fails if the semigroup does not satisfy independence. In this paper we explain how to extend Fell's absorption principle to an arbitrary submonoid $P$ of a group $G$ by using an enhanced version of the left regular representation. Li's semigroup $C^*$-algebra $C^*_s(P)$ and its representations appear naturally in our context. Using the enhanced left regular representation, we not only provide a very concrete presentation for the reduced object for $C^*_s(P)$ but we also obtain very transparent proofs of earlier results. We also address the non-selfadjoint theory and we show that the non-selfadjoint object attached to the enhanced left regular representation coincides with that of the left regular representation. We obtain a non-selfadjoint version of Fell's absorption principle involving the tensor algebra of a semigroup and we use it to improve recent results of Clouatre and Dor-On on the residual finite dimensionality of certain $C^*$-algebras associated with such tensor algebras. We also give yet another proof for the existence of a $C^*$-algebra which is co-universal for equivariant, Li-covariant representations of a submonoid $P$ of a group $G$.

The isomorphism problem for tensor algebras of multivariable dynamical systems

We resolve the isomorphism problem for tensor algebras of unital multivariable dynamical systems. Specifically we show that unitary equivalence after a conjugation for multivariable dynamical systems is a complete invariant for complete isometric isomorphisms between their tensor algebras. In particular, this settles a conjecture of Davidson and Kakariadis relating to work of Arveson from the sixties, and extends related work of Kakariadis and Katsoulis.

Tensor algebras of product systems and their C*-envelopes

Let $(G, P)$ be an abelian, lattice ordered group and let $X$ be a compactly aligned product system over $P$. We show that the C*-envelope of the Nica tensor algebra $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{T}^+_X$ coincides with both Sehnem's covariance algebra $\mathcal{A} \times_X P$ and the co-universal C*-algebra $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{O}^r_X$ for injective, gauge compatible, Nica-covariant representations of Carlsen, Larsen, Sims and Vittadello. We give several applications of this result on both the selfadjoint and non-selfadjoint operator algebra theory. First we guarantee the existence of $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{O}^r_X$, thus settling a problem of Carlsen, Larsen, Sims and Vittadello which was open even for abelian, lattice ordered groups. As a second application, we resolve a problem posed by Skalski and Zacharias on dilating isometric representations of product systems to unitary representations. As a third application we characterize the C*-envelope of the tensor algebra of a finitely aligned higher-rank graph which also holds for topological higher-rank graphs. As a final application we prove reduced Hao-Ng isomorphisms for generalized gauge actions of discrete groups on C*-algebras of product systems. This generalizes recent results that were obtained by various authors in the case where $(G, P) =(\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{N})$.

The non-selfadjoint approach to the Hao-Ng isomorphism

In an earlier work, the authors proposed a non-selfadjoint approach to the Hao-Ng isomorphism problem for the full crossed product, depending on the validity of two conjectures stated in the broader context of crossed products for operator algebras. By work of Harris and Kim, we now know that these conjectures in the generality stated may not always be valid. In this paper we show that in the context of hyperrigid tensor algebras of C*-correspondences, each one of these conjectures is equivalent to the Hao-Ng problem. This is accomplished by studying the representation theory of non-selfadjoint crossed products of C*-correspondence dynamical systems; in particular we show that there is an appropriate dilation theory. A large class of tensor algebras of C*-correspondences, including all regular ones, are shown to be hyperrigid. Using Hamana's injective envelope theory, we extend earlier results from the discrete group case to arbitrary locally compact groups; this includes a resolution of the Hao-Ng isomorphism for the reduced crossed product and all hyperrigid C*-correspondences. A culmination of these results is the resolution of the Hao-Ng isomorphism problem for the full crossed product and all row-finite graph correspondences; this extends a recent result of Bedos, Kaliszewski, Quigg and Spielberg.

Product systems of C*-correspondences and Takai duality

We establish the Hao-Ng isomorphism for generalized gauge actions of locally compact abelian groups on product systems over abelian lattice orders and we then use it to explore Takai duality in this context. As an application we generalize related work of Schafhauser.

Crossed Products of Operator Algebras

We study crossed products of arbitrary operator algebras by locally compact groups of completely isometric automorphisms. We develop an abstract theory that allows for generalizations of many of the fundamental results from the selfadjoint theory to our context. We complement our generic results with the detailed study of many important special cases. In particular we study crossed products of tensor algebras, triangular AF algebras and various associated C*-algebras. We make contributions to the study of C*-envelopes, semisimplicity, the semi-Dirichlet property, Takai duality and the Hao-Ng isomorphism problem. We also answer questions from the pertinent literature.

Crossed products of operator algebras: applications of Takai duality

Let $(\mathcal G, Σ)$ be an ordered abelian group with Haar measure $μ$, let $(\mathcal A, \mathcal G, α)$ be a dynamical system and let $\mathcal A\rtimes_α Σ$ be the associated semicrossed product. Using Takai duality we establish a stable isomorphism \[ \mathcal A\rtimes_α Σ\sim_{s} \big(\mathcal A \otimes \mathcal K(\mathcal G, Σ, μ)\big)\rtimes_{α\otimes {\rm Ad}\: ρ} \mathcal G, \] where $\mathcal K(\mathcal G, Σ, μ)$ denotes the compact operators in the CSL algebra ${\rm Alg}\:\mathcal L(\mathcal G, Σ, μ)$ and $ρ$ denotes the right regular representation of $\mathcal G$. We also show that there exists a complete lattice isomorphism between the $\hatα$-invariant ideals of $\mathcal A\rtimes_α Σ$ and the $(α\otimes {\rm Ad}\: ρ)$-invariant ideals of $\mathcal A \otimes \mathcal K(\mathcal G, Σ, μ)$. Using Takai duality we also continue our study of the Radical for the crossed product of an operator algebra and we solve open problems stemming from the earlier work of the authors. Among others we show that the crossed product of a radical operator algebra by a compact abelian group is a radical operator algebra. We also show that the permanence of semisimplicity fails for crossed products by $\mathbb R$. A final section of the paper is devoted to the study of radically tight dynamical systems, i.e., dynamical systems $(\mathcal A, \mathcal G, α)$ for which the identity ${\rm Rad}(\mathcal A \rtimes_α\mathcal G)=({\rm Rad}\:\mathcal A) \rtimes_α\mathcal G$ persists. A broad class of such dynamical systems is identified.

Limit algebras and integer-valued cocycles, revisited

A triangular limit algebra A is isometrically isomorphic to the tensor algebra of a C*-correspondence if and only if its fundamental relation R(A) is a tree admitting a $Z^+_0$-valued continuous and coherent cocycle. For triangular limit algebras which are isomorphic to tensor algebras, we give a very concrete description for their defining C*-correspondence and we show that it forms a complete invariant for isometric isomorphisms between such algebras. A related class of operator algebras is also classified using a variant of the Aho-Hopcroft-Ullman algorithm from computer aided graph theory.

Semicrossed products of operator algebras and their C*-envelopes

Let $\A$ be a unital operator algebra and let $α$ be an automorphism of $\A$ that extends to a *-automorphism of its $\ca$-envelope $\cenv (\A)$. In this paper we introduce the isometric semicrossed product $\A \times_α^{\is} \bbZ^+ $ and we show that $\cenv(\A \times_α^{\is} \bbZ^+) \simeq \cenv (\A) \times_α \bbZ$. In contrast, the $\ca$-envelope of the familiar contractive semicrossed product $\A \times_α \bbZ^+ $ may not equal $\cenv (\A) \times_α \bbZ$. Our main tool for calculating $\ca$-envelopes for semicrossed products is the concept of a relative semicrossed product of an operator algebra, which we explore in the more general context of injective endomorphisms. As an application, we extend a recent result of Davidson and Katsoulis to tensor algebras of $\ca$-correspondences. We show that if $\T_{\X}^{+}$ is the tensor algebra of a $\ca$-correspondence $(\X, \fA)$ and $α$ a completely isometric automorphism of $\T_{\X}^{+}$ that fixes the diagonal elementwise, then the contractive semicrossed product satisfies $ \cenv(\T_{\X}^{+} \times_α \bbZ^+)\simeq Ø_{\X} \times_α \bbZ$, where $Ø_{\X}$ denotes the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of $(\X, \fA)$.

Nest representations of directed graph algebras

This paper is a comprehensive study of the nest representations for the free semigroupoid algebra $\flgee$ of countable directed graph $G$ as well as its norm-closed counterpart, the tensor algebra $\T^{+}(G)$. We prove that the finite dimensional nest representations separate the points in $\flgee$, and a fortiori, in $\T^{+}(G)$. The irreducible finite dimensional representations separate the points in $\flgee$ if and only if $G$ is transitive in components (which is equivalent to being semisimple). Also the upper triangular nest representations separate points if and only if for every vertex $x \in \V(G)$ supporting a cycle, $x$ also supports at least one loop edge. We also study \textit{faithful} nest representations. We prove that $\flgee$ (or $\T^{+}(G)$) admits a faithful irreducible representation if and only if $G$ is strongly transitive as a directed graph. More generally, we obtain a condition on $G$ which is equivalent to the existence of a faithful nest representation. We also give a condition that determines the existence a faithful nest representation for a maximal type $\bN$ nest.

Compact Operators and Nest Representations of Limit Algebras

In this paper we study the nest representations of a strongly maximal TAF algebra, whose ranges contain non-zero compact operators. We introduce a particular class of such representations, the essential nest representations, and we show that their kernels coincide with the completely meet irreducible ideals. From this we deduce that there exist enough contractive nest representations, with non-zero compact operators in their range, to separate the points. Using nest representation theory, we also give a coordinate-free description of the fundamental groupoid for strongly maximal TAF algebras. For an arbitrary nest representation $ρ$ of a strongly maximal TAF algebra, we show that the presence of non-zero compact operators in the range implies that the nest is similar to a completely atomic one. If, in addition, the range of $ρ$ is norm closed, then every compact operator in the range of $ρ$ can be approximated by sums of rank one operators in the range of $ρ$. In the case of $\bbN$-ordered nest representations, we show that the range of $ρ$ contains finite rank operators iff $\ker ρ$ fails to be a prime ideal.

The C*-envelope of the tensor algebra of a directed graph

Given an arbitrary countable directed graph $G$ we prove the C*-envelope of the tensor algebra $T_+(G)$ coincides with the universal Cuntz-Krieger algebra associated with $G$. Our approach is concrete in nature and does not rely on Hilbert module machinery. We show how our results extend to the case of higher rank graphs, where an analogous result is obtained for the tensor algebra of a row-finite $k$-graph with no sources.

Isomorphisms of algebras associated with directed graphs

In this paper we verify that the graph forms a complete invariant for Banach algebra isomorphisms of tensor algebras of graphs. For tensor algebras associated with countable directed graphs having no sinks the graph forms an invariant for algebraic isomorphisms as well. The graph also forms a complete invariant for w*-bicontinuous isomorphisms of free semigroupoid algebras. For free semigroupoid algebras associated with countable directed locally finite graphs with no sinks, the graph also forms an invariant for algebraic isomorphisms.

Applications of the Wold decomposition to the study of row contractions associated with directed graphs

Based on a Wold decomposition for families of partial isometries and projections of Cuntz-Krieger-Toeplitz-type, we extend several fundamental theorems from the case of single vertex graphs to the general case of countable directed graphs with no sinks. We prove a Szego-type factorization theorem for CKT families, which leads to information on the structure of the unit ball in free semigroupoid algebras, and show that joint similarity implies joint unitary equivalence for such families. For each graph we prove a generalization of von Neumann's inequality which applies to row contractions of operators on Hilbert space which are related to the graph in a natural way. This yields a functional calculus determined by quiver algebras and free semigroupoid algebras. We establish a generalization of Coburn's theorem for the C*-algebra of a CKT family, and prove a universality theorem for C*-algebras generated by these families. In both cases, the C*-algebras generated by quiver algebras play the universal role.
