Higher anomalies, compressing SPTs and cohomology operations

We explicitly compute and tabulate the suspension map for cohomology operations, applying it to the dimensional reduction of anomalies and higher group structures of generalised symmetries in quantum field theories and lattice systems. In a quantum system with a discrete $p$-form symmetry, we can restrict the symmetry defects to a codimension-$q$ subspace of spacetime, or equivalently confine the gauge field to a slab whose thickness approaches zero. This results in a $(p-q)$-form symmetry on the subspace. We determine the fate of two important properties of symmetries under this process. First, we compute the anomaly of the reduced symmetry, or the higher anomaly of the original symmetry, which acts as an obstruction to higher gauging and onsiteability. Second, for two symmetries forming a higher-group structure, encoded as a Postnikov class, we compute the reduced higher-group structure, which may or may not be trivial. Both cases are captured by the $q$-fold iteration of the cohomology suspension $Ω$, also known as the loop functor or transgression, in the cohomology of Eilenberg--MacLane spaces. Classical results state that $Ω$ is an isomorphism in a stable range and annihilates mixed anomalies. To calculate $Ω$ over a base ring which is not a field, we make use of small models for the chain DGAs of Eilenberg--MacLane spaces, pioneered by Cartan and Moore, whose results we review and extend. The critical added step is the improvement of a mod $p$ chain contraction to the $p$-local integers, obtained via a $p$-adic series. We automate the computations in a software package \texttt{emcm}, and provide extensive tables of the results. Finally, to make contact with explicit cochain formulations of cohomology operations, we demonstrate how to calculate cup products and certain cup-$i$ products in this framework.

SymTFT, Protected Gaplessness, and Spontaneous Breaking of Non-invertible Symmetries

In recent years we have learned that several four-dimensional field theories can manifest non-invertible zero-form symmetries generalizing the Kramers-Wannier duality defect of the 2d critical Ising model. Several recent works by various groups have observed a deep interplay among such non-invertible symmetries in 3+1 dimensions, their anomalies, and the properties of the ground state(s). The purpose of this work is to present a first coarse classification of all possible classes of non-invertible symmetries of this type that can either enforce gaplessness or be spontaneously broken in the infrared exploiting the topological symmetry theory formalism. Our methods also generalize to non-invertible KW-like duality symmetries graded by non-abelian finite subgroups. As a first applications of our results we present examples in the context of supersymmetric models. Along the way we notice the potential for further global structures that could be realized by non-SUSY versions of Argyres-Douglas type fixed points.

The Higher Structure of Symmetries of Axion-Maxwell Theory

Generalized symmetries of quantum field theories can be characterized by topological defects/operators organized into a higher category. In this paper we consider the Axion-Maxwell field theory in four dimensions and, building on the construction of its topological defects by Choi, Lam, Shao, Hidaka, Nitta and Yokokura, we discuss field theoretical methods to compute some aspects of the higher structure of such category. In particular, we determine explicitly the generalized F-symbols for the non-invertible electric 1-form symmetry of the theory. Along the way, we clarify various aspects of the bottom-up worldvolume approach towards the calculus of defects.

Defect groups of class $\mathcal{S}$ theories from the Coulomb branch

We study the global forms of class $\mathcal{S}[A_{N-1}]$ 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ theories by deriving their defect groups (charges of line operators up to screening by local operators) from Coulomb branch data. Specifically, we employ an explicit construction of the BPS quiver for the case of full regular punctures to show that the defect group is $(\mathbb{Z}_N)^{2g}$, where $g$ is the genus of the associated Riemann surface. This determines a sector of surface operators in the 5d symmetry TFT. We show how these can also be identified from dimensional reduction of M-theory. We discuss connections to the theory of cluster algebras.

Simons Lectures on Categorical Symmetries

Global Categorical Symmetries are a powerful new tool for analyzing quantum field theories. This volume compiles lecture notes from the 2022 and 2023 summer schools on Global Categorical Symmetries, held at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and at the Swiss Map Research Station in Les Diableret. Specifically, this volume collects the lectures: * An introduction to symmetries in quantum field theory, Kantaro Ohmori * Introduction to anomalies in quantum field theory, Clay Córdova * Symmetry Categories 101, Michele Del Zotto * Applied Cobordism Hypothesis, David Jordan * Finite symmetry in QFT, Daniel S. Freed These volumes are devoted to interested newcomers: we only assume (basic) knowledge of quantum field theory (QFT) and some relevant maths. We try to give appropriate references for non-standard materials that are not covered. Our aim in this first volume is to illustrate some of the main questions and ideas together with some of the methods and the techniques necessary to begin exploring global categorical symmetries of QFTs.

Bell Diagonal and Werner state generation: entanglement, non-locality, steering and discord on the IBM quantum computer

We propose the first correct special-purpose quantum circuits for preparation of Bell-diagonal states (BDS), and implement them on the IBM Quantum computer, characterizing and testing complex aspects of their quantum correlations in the full parameter space. Among the circuits proposed, one involves only two quantum bits but requires adapted quantum tomography routines handling classical bits in parallel. The entire class of Bell-diagonal states is generated, and a number of characteristic indicators, namely entanglement of formation, CHSH non-locality, steering and discord, are experimentally evaluated over the full parameter space and compared with theory. As a by-product of this work we also find a remarkable general inequality between "quantum discord" and "asymmetric relative entropy of discord": the former never exceeds the latter. We also prove that for all BDS the two coincide.
