On Pursell-Shanks type results

We prove a Lie-algebraic characterization of vector bundle for the Lie algebra $\mathcal{D}(E,M),$ seen as ${\rm C}^\infty(M)-$module, of all linear operators acting on sections of a vector bundle $E\to M$. We obtain similar result for its Lie subalgebra $\mathcal{D}^1(E,M)$ of all linear first-order differential operators. Thanks to a well-chosen filtration, $\mathcal{D}(E,M)$ becomes $\mathcal{P}(E,M)$ and we prove that $\mathcal{P}^1(E,M)$ characterizes the vector bundle without the hypothesis of being seen as ${\rm C}^\infty(M)-$module. We prove that the Lie algebra $\mathcal{S}(\mathcal{P}(E,M))$ of symbols of linear operators acting on smooth sections of a vector bundle $E\to M,$ characterizes it. To obtain this, we assume that $\mathcal{S}(\mathcal{P}(E,M))$ is seen as ${\rm C}^\infty(M)-$module. We obtain a similar result with the Lie algebra $\mathcal{S}^1(\mathcal{P}(E,M))$ of symbols of first-order linear operators without the hypothesis of being seen as a ${\rm C}^\infty(M)-$module.

Lie algebra of homogeneous operators of a vector bundle

We prove that for a vector bundle $ E \to M$, the Lie algebra $\mathcal{D}_{\mathcal{E}}(E)$ generated by all differential operators on $E$ which are eigenvectors of $L_{\mathcal{E}},$ the Lie derivative in the direction of the Euler vector field of $E,$ and the Lie algebra $\mathcal{D}_G(E)$ obtained by Grothendieck construction over the $\mathbb{R}-$algebra $\mathcal{A}(E):= {\rm Pol}(E)$ of fiberwise polynomial functions, coincide up an isomorphism. This allows us to compute all the derivations of the $\mathbb{R}-$algebra $\mathcal{A}(E)$ and to obtain an explicit description of the Lie algebra of zero-weight derivations of $\mathcal{A}(E).$

On Gel'fand-Kolmogoroff type results

We prove that a vector bundle $ E \to M$ is characterized by the associative structure of the space of symbols of the Lie algebra generated by all differential operators on $E$ which are eigenvectors of the Lie derivative in the direction of the Euler vector field. We also obtain similar result with the $\mathbb{R}-$ algebra of smooth functions which are polynomial along the fibers of $E.$ This allows us to deduce a Gel'fand-Kolmogoroff type result for the $\mathbb{R}-$algebra ${\rm Pol}(T^*(M))$ of symbols of the differential operators of $M.$

Classical Poisson algebra of a vector bundle : Lie-algebraic characterization

We prove that the Lie algebra $\mathcal{S}(\mathcal{P}(E,M))$ of symbols of linear operators acting on smooth sections of a vector bundle $E\to M,$ characterizes it. To obtain this, we assume that $\mathcal{S}(\mathcal{P}(E,M))$ is seen as ${\rm C}^\infty(M)-$module and that the vector bundle is of rank $n>1.$ We improve this result for the Lie algebra $\mathcal{S}^1(\mathcal{P}(E,M))$ of symbols of first-order linear operators. We obtain a Lie algebraic characterization of vector bundles with $\mathcal{S}^1(\mathcal{P}(E,M))$ without the hypothesis of being seen as a ${\rm C}^\infty(M)-$module.

On a Poisson-algebraic characterization of vector bundles

We prove that the $\mathbb{R}-$algebra $\mathcal{S}(\mathcal{P}(E,M)) $ of symbols of differential operators acting on the sections of the vector bundle $E\to M$ decompose into the sum \[ \mathcal{S}(\mathcal{P}(E,M))=\mathcal{J}(E)\oplus {\rm Pol}(T^*M) \] where $\mathcal{J}(E)$ is an ideal of $\mathcal{S}(\mathcal{P}(E,M))$ in which product of two elements is always zero. This induces that $\mathcal{S}(\mathcal{P}(E,M))$ cannot characterize $E \to M$ with its only structure of $\mathbb{R}-$ algebra. We prove that with its Poisson algebra structure, $\mathcal{S}(\mathcal{P}(E,M))$ characterizes the vector bundle $E\to M$ without the requirement to be considered as a ${\rm C}^\infty(M)-$module.

On a Lie Algebraic Characterization of Vector Bundles

We prove that a vector bundle $π: E \to M$ is characterized by the Lie algebra generated by all differential operators on $E$ which are eigenvectors of the Lie derivative in the direction of the Euler vector field. Our result is of Pursell-Shanks type but it is remarkable in the sense that it is the whole fibration that is characterized here. The proof relies on a theorem of [Lecomte P., J. Math. Pures Appl. (9) 60 (1981), 229-239] and inherits the same hypotheses. In particular, our characterization holds only for vector bundles of rank greater than 1.
