Exploring thermal order in conformal theories with multiple scalars coupled to an $O(N)$ vector field

We study thermal order in conformal field theories (CFTs) in $d=4-ε$ and $d=3$ dimensions where several scalars are coupled to an $O(N)$ vector field. In $(4-ε)$ dimensions, we consider models coupling a cubic model of $M$ scalars with $\mathbb{Z}_2^M\rtimes S_M$ symmetry (corresponding to sign flips and permutations of the scalars) to an $O(N)$ vector model. For any $M$, we find a window of $N$ in which two Wilson-Fisher-like fixed points exist. We show that the $\mathbb{Z}_2^M\rtimes S_M$ symmetry is spontaneously broken at arbitrary nonzero temperatures for $M=2$ and sufficiently large $N$ within this window, but it remains unbroken for $M>2$. Using the functional renormalisation group to continue these fixed points towards three dimensions, we find that they collide and move into the complex plane well before reaching $d=3$, suggesting that their continuation to $d=3$ does not yield unitary CFTs. We then work directly in three dimensions at large but finite $N$, with $M\ll N$, initially without assuming any permutation symmetry among the $M$ scalars. By studying the RG flow, we show that these models possess a conformal manifold up to the leading nontrivial order in the $1/N$ expansion of the beta functions (which is $\mathcal{O}(1/N)$). At each point on this manifold, the scalars split into two classes that are distinguished by how they couple to the $O(N)$ vector field. We then restrict to a subspace of the conformal manifold where there is an additional symmetry under permutations of the scalars within each class. We prove that in a domain of this subspace, all $M$ scalars acquire thermal expectation values such that the symmetry under sign flips of the scalars is spontaneously broken at all nonzero temperatures. This provides a novel class of large $N$ CFTs that exhibit a rich pattern of persistent symmetry breaking at nonzero temperatures.

A Comment On Topological Degeneracy In Gauged WZW Models

Given a Lie group $G$, a level $k$, and a Lie subgroup $H$ one can construct 2d conformal field theories by either 1.) gauging a nonanomalous $H$ symmetry of the WZW model constructed from $(G,k)$ or 2.) using an algebraic procedure known as the GKO coset construction. The two models are closely related, but not precisely the same: The gauged WZW model is identified with the corresponding GKO model coupled to a 2d topological field theory. The topological theory is characterized by a commutative Frobenius algebra derived from the endomorphisms of an algebra object in a modular tensor category constructed from $(G,H,k)$. The partition function on the torus of the two models differ by a factor of the dimension of this algebra of endomorphisms. Concrete examples are constructed and some applications to string theory and 2d Yang-Mills coupled to nonanomalous matter are briefly discussed. This paper is a summary of a longer companion paper.

Holography of K-complexity: Switchbacks and Shockwaves

In this paper we study Krylov complexity in the presence of single and multiple operators in the DSSYK model, where we can use the analytical techniques coming from chord diagrammatics. One of the results we obtain is that it showcases the switchback effect, when the appropriate ``triple-scaling limit'' is taken, under which the model becomes dual to semiclassical JT gravity. We build on previous work, where it was shown that, in the continuum limit, Krylov complexity is defined as the sum of expectations value of right and left chord number operators. Here we argue that this property signals the emergence of the geometric nature of this notion of K-complexity. We show that in the regime where DSSYK is dual to semi-classical gravity, the light matter chord corresponds to a shockwave insertion in JT gravity. We identify the geodesic-length dual of the operator complexity and extend the relevant holographic dictionary to describe the details of the matter insertions. Additionally, we define a class of two-sided perturbations of the Lanczos algorithm that allows to analyze the switchback effect. In the appropriate semi-classical limit, this perturbed operator complexity is dual to an ERB length in JT gravity with corresponding shockwave insertions. We thus establish that K-complexity exhibits the expected switchback effect and universal late-time linear growth, consistent with previous findings regarding its geometric nature in the holographic bulk-boundary map.

Krylov Complexity

We introduce and review a new complexity measure, called `Krylov complexity', which takes its origins in the field of quantum-chaotic dynamics, serving as a canonical measure of operator growth and spreading. Krylov complexity, underpinned by the Lanczos algorithm, has since evolved into a highly diverse field of its own right, both because of its attractive features as a complexity, whose definition does not depend on arbitrary control parameters, and whose phenomenology serves as a rich and sensitive probe of chaotic dynamics up to exponentially late times, but also because of its relevance to seemingly far-afield subjects such as holographic dualities and the quantum physics of black holes. In this review we give a unified perspective on these topics, emphasizing the robust and most general features of K-complexity, both in chaotic and integrable systems, state and prove theorems on its generic features and describe how it is geometrised in the context of (dual) gravitational dynamics. We hope that this review will serve both as a source of intuition about K-complexity in and of itself, as well as a resource for researchers trying to gain an overview over what is by now a rather large and multi-faceted literature. We also mention and discuss a number of open problems related to K-complexity, underlining its currently very active status as a field of research.

Operator K-complexity in DSSYK: Krylov complexity equals bulk length

In this paper we study the notion of complexity under time evolution in chaotic quantum systems with holographic duals. Continuing on from our previous work, we turn our attention to the issue of Krylov complexity upon the insertion of a class of single-particle operators in the double-scaled SYK model. Such an operator is described by a matter-chord insertion, which splits the theory into left/right sectors, allowing us, via chord-diagram technology, to compute two different notions of complexity associated to the operator insertion: first a Krylov operator complexity, and second the Krylov complexity of a state obtained by an operator acting on the thermofield double state. We will provide both an analytic proof and detailed numerical evidence, that both Krylov complexities arise from a recursively defined basis of states characterized by a constant total chord number. As a consequence, in all cases we are able to establish that Krylov complexity is given by the expectation value of a length operator acting on the Hilbert space of the theory, expressed in terms of basis states, organized by left and right chord number. We find analytic expressions for the semiclassical limit of K-complexity, and study how the size of the operator encodes the scrambling dynamics upon the matter insertion in Krylov language. We furthermore determine the effective Hamiltonian governing the evolution of K-complexity, showing that evolution on the Krylov chain can equivalently be understood as a particle moving in a Morse potential. A particular type of triple scaling limit allows to access the gravitational sector of the theory, in which the geometrical nature of K-complexity is assured by virtue of being a total chord length, in an analogous fashion to what was found in [1] for the K-complexity of the thermofield double state.

On the time dependence of holographic complexity for charged AdS black holes with scalar hair

In the presence of a scalar hair perturbation, the Cauchy horizon of a Reissner-Nordström black hole disappears and is replaced by the rapid collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge, which leads to a Kasner singularity [1,2]. We study the time-dependence of holographic complexity, both for the volume and for the action proposals, in a class of models with hairy black holes. Volume complexity can only probe a portion of the black hole interior that remains far away from the Kasner singularity. We provide numerical evidence that the Lloyd bound is satisfied by the volume complexity rate in all the parameter space that we explored. Action complexity can instead probe a portion of the spacetime closer to the singularity. In particular, the complexity rate diverges at the critical time $t_c$ for which the Wheeler-DeWitt patch touches the singularity. After the critical time the action complexity rate approaches a constant. We find that the Kasner exponent does not directly affect the details of the divergence of the complexity rate at $t=t_c$ and the late-time behaviour of the complexity. The Lloyd bound is violated by action complexity at finite time, because the complexity rate diverges at $t=t_c$. We find that the Lloyd bound is satisfied by the asymptotic action complexity rate in all the parameter space that we investigated.

Symmetry breaking at high temperatures in large N gauge theories

Considering marginally relevant and relevant deformations of the weakly coupled $(3+1)$-dimensional large $N$ conformal gauge theories introduced in arXiv:2011.13981, we study the patterns of phase transitions in these systems that lead to a symmetry-broken phase in the high temperature limit. These deformations involve only the scalar fields in the models. The marginally relevant deformations are obtained by varying certain double trace quartic couplings between the scalar fields. The relevant deformations, on the other hand, are obtained by adding masses to the scalar fields while keeping all the couplings frozen at their fixed point values. At the $N\rightarrow\infty$ limit, the RG flows triggered by these deformations approach the aforementioned weakly coupled CFTs in the UV regime. These UV fixed points lie on a conformal manifold with the shape of a circle in the space of couplings. In certain parameter regimes a subset of points on this manifold exhibits thermal order characterized by the spontaneous breaking of a global $\mathbb Z_2$ or $U(1)$ symmetry and Higgsing of a subset of gauge bosons at all nonzero temperatures. We show that the RG flows triggered by the marginally relevant deformations lead to a weakly coupled IR fixed point which lacks the thermal order. Thus, the systems defined by these RG flows undergo a transition from a disordered phase at low temperatures to an ordered phase at high temperatures. This provides examples of both inverse symmetry breaking and symmetry nonrestoration. For the relevant deformations, we demonstrate that a variety of phase transitions are possible depending on the signs and magnitudes of the masses (squared) added to the scalar fields. Using thermal perturbation theory, we derive the approximate values of the critical temperatures for all these phase transitions. All the results are obtained at the $N\rightarrow\infty$ limit.

The bi-conical vector model at $1/N$

We study finite $N$ aspects of the $O(m)\times O(N-m)$ vector model with quartic interactions in general $2\leq d \leq 6$ spacetime dimensions. This model has recently been shown to display the phenomenon of persistent symmetry breaking at a perturbative Wilson-Fisher-like fixed point in $d=4-ε$ dimensions. The large rank limit of the bi-conical model displays a conformal manifold and a moduli space of vacua. We find a set of three double trace scalar operators that are respectively irrelevant, relevant and marginal deformations of the conformal manifold in general $d$. We calculate the anomalous dimensions of the single and multi-trace scalar operators to the first sub-leading order in the large rank expansion. The anomalous dimension of the marginal operator does not vanish in general, indicating that the conformal manifold is lifted at finite $N$. In the case of equal ranks we are able to derive explicitly the scaling dimensions of various operators as functions of only $d$.

Thermal order in large N conformal gauge theories

In this work we explore the possibility of spontaneous breaking of global symmetries at all nonzero temperatures for conformal field theories (CFTs) in $D = 4$ space-time dimensions. We show that such a symmetry-breaking indeed occurs in certain families of non-supersymmetric large $N$ gauge theories at a planar limit. We also show that this phenomenon is accompanied by the system remaining in a persistent Brout-Englert-Higgs (BEH) phase at any temperature. These analyses are motivated by the work done in arXiv:2005.03676 where symmetry-breaking was observed in all thermal states for certain CFTs in fractional dimensions. In our case, the theories demonstrating the above features have gauge groups which are specific products of $SO(N)$ in one family and $SU(N)$ in the other. Working in a perturbative regime at the $N\rightarrow\infty$ limit, we show that the beta functions in these theories yield circles of fixed points in the space of couplings. We explicitly check this structure up to two loops and then present a proof of its survival under all loop corrections. We show that under certain conditions, an interval on this circle of fixed points demonstrates both the spontaneous breaking of a global symmetry as well as a persistent BEH phase at all nonzero temperatures. The broken global symmetry is $\mathbb{Z}_2$ in one family of theories and $U(1)$ in the other. The corresponding order parameters are expectation values of the determinants of bifundamental scalar fields in these theories. We characterize these symmetries as baryon-like symmetries in the respective models.

Quantum Fluctuations and New Instantons II: Quartic Unbounded Potential

We study the fate of a false vacuum in the case of a potential that contains a portion which is quartic and unbounded. We first prove that an $O(4)$ invariant instanton with the Coleman boundary conditions does not exist in this case. This, however, does not imply that the false vacuum does not decay. We show how the quantum fluctuations may regularize the singular classical solutions. This gives rise to a new class of $O(4)$ invariant regularized instantons which describe the vacuum instability in the absence of the Coleman instanton. We derive the corresponding solutions and calculate the decay rate they induce.

Thermal Order in Conformal Theories

It is widely expected that at sufficiently high temperatures order is always lost, e.g. magnets loose their ferromagnetic properties. We pose the question of whether this is always the case in the context of quantum field theory in $d$ space dimensions. More concretely, one can ask whether there exist critical points (CFTs) which break some global symmetry at arbitrary finite temperature. The most familiar CFTs do not exhibit symmetry breaking at finite temperature, and moreover, in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, critical points at finite temperature are described by an uncharged black brane which obeys a no-hair theorem. Yet, we show that there exist CFTs which have some of their internal symmetries broken at arbitrary finite temperature. Our main example is a vector model which we study both in the epsilon expansion and arbitrary rank as well as the large rank limit (and arbitrary dimension). The large rank limit of the vector model displays a conformal manifold, a moduli space of vacua, and a deformed moduli space of vacua at finite temperature. The appropriate Nambu-Goldstone bosons including the dilaton-like particle are identified. Using these tools we establish symmetry breaking at finite temperature for finite small $ε$. We also prove that a large class of other fixed points, which describe some of the most common quantum magnets, indeed behave as expected and do not break any global symmetry at finite temperature. We discuss some of the consequences of finite temperature symmetry breaking for the spectrum of local operators. Finally, we propose a class of fixed points which appear to be possible candidates for finite temperature symmetry breaking in $d=2$.

On Some Universal Features of the Holographic Quantum Complexity of Bulk Singularities

We perform a comparative study of the time dependence of the holographic quantum complexity of some space like singular bulk gravitational backgrounds. This is done by considering the two available notions of complexity, one that relates it to the maximal spatial volume and the other that relates it to the classical action of the Wheeler-de Witt patch. We calculate and compare the leading and the next to leading terms and find some universal features. The complexity decreases towards the singularity for both definitions, for all types of singularities studied. In addition the leading terms have the same quantitative behavior for both definitions in restricted number of cases and the behaviour itself is different for different singular backgrounds. The quantitative details of the next to leading terms, such as their specific form of time dependence, are found not to be universal. They vary between the different cases and between the different bulk definitions of complexity. We also address some technical points inherent to the calculation.

String pair production in non homogeneous backgrounds

We consider string pair production in non homogeneous electric backgrounds. We study several particular configurations which can be addressed with the Euclidean world-sheet instanton technique, the analogue of the world-line instanton for particles. In the first case the string is suspended between two D-branes in flat space-time, in the second case the string lives in AdS and terminates on one D-brane (this realizes the holographic Schwinger effect). In some regions of parameter space the result is well approximated by the known analytical formulas, either the particle pair production in non-homogeneous background or the string pair production in homogeneous background. In other cases we see effects which are intrinsically stringy and related to the non-homogeneity of the background. The pair production is enhanced already for particles in time dependent electric field backgrounds. The string nature enhances this even further. For spacial varying electrical background fields the string pair production is less suppressed than the rate of particle pair production. We discuss in some detail how the critical field is affected by the non-homogeneity, for both time and space dependent electric field backgrouds. We also comment on what could be an interesting new prediction for the small field limit. The third case we consider is pair production in holographic confining backgrounds with homogeneous and non-homogeneous fields.

Holographic Complexity And Cosmological Singularities

We study the evolution of holographic complexity in various AdS/CFT models containing cosmological crunch singularities. We find that a notion of complexity measured by extremal bulk volumes tends to decrease as the singularity is approached in CFT time, suggesting that the corresponding quantum states have simpler entanglement structure at the singularity.

Geometry And Quantum Noise

We study the fine structure of long-time quantum noise in correlation functions of AdS/CFT systems. Under standard assumptions of quantum chaos for the dynamics and the observables, we estimate the size of exponentially small oscillations and trace them back to geometrical features of the bulk system. The noise level is highly suppressed by the amount of dynamical chaos and the amount of quantum impurity in the states. This implies that, despite their missing on the details of Poincare recurrences, `virtual' thermal AdS phases do control the overall noise amplitude even at high temperatures where the thermal ensemble is dominated by large AdS black holes. We also study EPR correlations and find that, in contrast to the behavior of large correlation peaks, their noise level is the same in TFD states and in more general highly entangled states.

On periodically driven AdS/CFT

We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study a thermally isolated conformal field theory in four dimensions which undergoes a repeated deformation by an external periodic time-dependent source coupled to an operator of dimension Delta. The initial state of the theory is taken to be at a finite temperature. We compute the energy dissipated in the system as a function of the frequency and of the dimension Delta of the perturbing operator. This is done in the linear response regime. In order to study the details of thermalization in the dual field theory, the leading-order backreaction on the AdS black brane metric is computed. The evolution of the event and the apparent horizons is monitored; the increase of area in each cycle coincides with the increase in the equilibrium entropy corresponding to the amount of energy dissipated. The time evolution of the entanglement entropy of a spherical region and that of the two-points function of a probe operator with a large dimension are also inspected; we find a delay in the thermalization of these quantities which is proportional to the size of the region which is being probed. Thus, the delay is more pronounced in the infrared. We comment on a possible transition in the time evolution of the energy fluctuations.

Conformal Complementarity Maps

We study quantum cosmological models for certain classes of bang/crunch singularities, using the duality between expanding bubbles in AdS with a FRW interior cosmology and perturbed CFTs on de Sitter space-time. It is pointed out that horizon complementarity in the AdS bulk geometries is realized as a conformal transformation in the dual deformed CFT. The quantum version of this map is described in full detail in a toy model involving conformal quantum mechanics. In this system the complementarity map acts as an exact duality between eternal and apocalyptic Hamiltonian evolutions. We calculate the commutation relation between the Hamiltonians corresponding to the different frames. It vanishes only on scale invariant states.

Defects, Super-Poincaré line bundle and Fermionic T-duality

Topological defects are interfaces joining two conformal field theories, for which the energy momentum tensor is continuous across the interface. A class of the topological defects is provided by the interfaces separating two bulk systems each described by its own Lagrangian, where the two descriptions are related by a discrete symmetry. In this paper we elaborate on the cases in which the discrete symmetry is a bosonic or a fermionic T- duality. We review how the equations of motion imposed by the defect encode the general bosonic T- duality transformations for toroidal compactifications. We generalize this analysis in some detail to the case of topological defects allowed in coset CFTs, in particular to those cosets where the gauged group is either an axial or vector U(1). This is discussed in both the operator and Lagrangian approaches. We proceed to construct a defect encoding a fermionic T-duality. We show that the fermionic T-duality is implemented by the Super-Poincaré line bundle. The observation that the exponent of the gauge invariant flux on a defect is a kernel of the Fourier-Mukai transform of the Ramond-Ramond fields, is generalized to a fermionic T-duality. This is done via a fiberwise integration on supermanifolds.
