Analytic Techniques for Solving the Transport Equations in Electroweak Baryogenesis

We develop an efficient method for solving transport equations, particularly in the context of electroweak baryogenesis. It provides fully-analytical results under mild approximations and can also test semi-analytical results, which are applicable in more general cases. Key elements of our method include the reduction of the second-order differential equations to first order, representing the set of coupled equations as a block matrix of the particle densities and their derivatives, identification of zero modes, and block decomposition of the matrix. We apply our method to calculate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) in a Standard Model effective field theory framework of complex Yukawa couplings to determine the sensitivity of the resulting BAU to modifications of various model parameters and rates, and to estimate the effect of the commonly-used thin-wall approximation.

Implications of the upper bound on $\boldsymbol{h\toμ^+μ^-}$ on the baryon asymmetry of the Universe

The upper bounds from the ATLAS and CMS experiments on the decay rate of the Higgs boson to two muons provide the strongest constraint on an imaginary part of the muon Yukawa coupling. This bound is more than an order of magnitude stronger than bounds from $\mathcal{CP}$-violating observables, specifically the electric dipole moment of the electron. It excludes a scenario $-$ which had been viable prior to these measurements $-$ that a complex muon Yukawa coupling is the dominant source of the baryon asymmetry. Even with this bound, the muon source can still contribute ${\cal O}(16\%)$ of the asymmetry.

Improved isotope-shift-based bounds on bosons beyond the Standard Model through measurements of the $^2$D$_{3/2} - ^2$D$_{5/2}$ interval in Ca$^+$

We perform high-resolution spectroscopy of the $3$d$~^2$D$_{3/2} - 3$d$~^2$D$_{5/2}$ interval in all stable even isotopes of $^A$Ca$^+$ (A = 40, 42, 44, 46 and 48) with an accuracy of $\sim$ 20 Hz using direct frequency-comb Raman spectroscopy. Combining these data with isotope shift measurements of the 4s$~^2$S$_{1/2} \leftrightarrow 3$d$~^2$D$_{5/2}$ transition, we carry out a King plot analysis with unprecedented sensitivity to coupling between electrons and neutrons by bosons beyond the Standard Model. Furthermore, we estimate the sensitivity to such bosons from equivalent spectroscopy in Ba$^+$ and Yb$^+$. Finally, the data yield isotope shifts of the 4s$~^2$S$_{1/2} \leftrightarrow 3$d$~^2$D$_{3/2}$ transition at 10 part-per-billion through combination with recent data of Knollmann et al (2019).

$CP$ violation from $τ$, $t$ and $b$ dimension-6 Yukawa couplings -- interplay of baryogenesis, EDM and Higgs physics

We explore the implications of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) with dimension-six terms involving the Higgs boson and third-generation fermion fields on the rate of Higgs boson production and decay into fermions, on the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the electron, and on the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We study the consequences of allowing these additional terms for each flavor separately and for combinations of two flavors. We find that a complex $τ$ Yukawa coupling can account for the observed baryon asymmetry $Y_B^{\rm obs}$ within current LHC and EDM bounds. A complex $b$ ($t$) Yukawa coupling can account for $4\%$ ($2\%$) of $Y_B^{\rm obs}$, whereas a combination of the two can reach $12\%$. Combining $τ$ with either $t$ or $b$ enlarges the viable parameter space owing to cancellations in the EDM and in either Higgs production times decay or the total Higgs width, respectively. Interestingly, in such a scenario there exists a region in parameter space where the SMEFT contributions to the electron EDM cancel and collider signal strengths are precisely SM-like, while producing sufficient baryon asymmetry. Measuring $CP$ violation in Higgs decays to $τ$ leptons is the smoking gun for this scenario.

MSSM Higgs Boson Searches at the LHC: Benchmark Scenarios for Run 2 and Beyond

We propose six new benchmark scenarios for Higgs boson searches in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Our calculations follow the recommendations of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group, and benefit from recent developments in the predictions for the Higgs-boson masses and mixing. All of the proposed scenarios are compatible with the most recent results from Run 2 of the LHC. In particular, they feature a scalar with mass and couplings compatible with those of the observed Higgs boson, and a significant portion of their parameter space is allowed by the limits from the searches for SUSY particles and additional Higgs bosons. We define a scenario where all SUSY particles are relatively heavy, and two scenarios with light colorless SUSY particles (charginos, neutralinos and, in one case, staus). In addition, we present two scenarios featuring alignment without decoupling, realized with either the lighter or the heavier scalar being SM-like, and a scenario with CP violation.

Long-Lived Particles at the Energy Frontier: The MATHUSLA Physics Case

We examine the theoretical motivations for long-lived particle (LLP) signals at the LHC in a comprehensive survey of Standard Model (SM) extensions. LLPs are a common prediction of a wide range of theories that address unsolved fundamental mysteries such as naturalness, dark matter, baryogenesis and neutrino masses, and represent a natural and generic possibility for physics beyond the SM (BSM). In most cases the LLP lifetime can be treated as a free parameter from the $μ$m scale up to the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis limit of $\sim 10^7$m. Neutral LLPs with lifetimes above $\sim$ 100m are particularly difficult to probe, as the sensitivity of the LHC main detectors is limited by challenging backgrounds, triggers, and small acceptances. MATHUSLA is a proposal for a minimally instrumented, large-volume surface detector near ATLAS or CMS. It would search for neutral LLPs produced in HL-LHC collisions by reconstructing displaced vertices (DVs) in a low-background environment, extending the sensitivity of the main detectors by orders of magnitude in the long-lifetime regime. In this white paper we study the LLP physics opportunities afforded by a MATHUSLA-like detector at the HL-LHC. We develop a model-independent approach to describe the sensitivity of MATHUSLA to BSM LLP signals, and compare it to DV and missing energy searches at ATLAS or CMS. We then explore the BSM motivations for LLPs in considerable detail, presenting a large number of new sensitivity studies. While our discussion is especially oriented towards the long-lifetime regime at MATHUSLA, this survey underlines the importance of a varied LLP search program at the LHC in general. By synthesizing these results into a general discussion of the top-down and bottom-up motivations for LLP searches, it is our aim to demonstrate the exceptional strength and breadth of the physics case for the construction of the MATHUSLA detector.

Relaxion and light (pseudo)scalars at the HL-LHC and lepton colliders

We study the potential of future lepton colliders, running at the Z-pole and above, and the High-Luminosity LHC to search for the relaxion and other light scalars $ϕ$. We investigate the interplay of direct searches and precision observables for both CP-even and -odd couplings. In particular, precision measurements of exotic Z-decays, Higgs couplings, the exotic Higgs decay into a relaxion pair and associated $Zϕ$ and $γϕ$ production are promising channels to yield strong bounds.

$\mathcal{CP}$-violating effects on MSSM Higgs searches

We study the effects of $\mathcal{CP}$-violating phases on the phenomenology of the Higgs sector of the MSSM. Complex parameters in the MSSM lead to $\mathcal{CP}$-violating mixing between the tree-level $\mathcal{CP}$-even and $\mathcal{CP}$-odd neutral Higgs states, leading to three new loop-corrected mass eigenstates $h_a$, $a \in \lbrace 1,2,3\rbrace$. For scenarios where a light Higgs boson at about 125 GeV can be identified with the observed signal and where the other Higgs states are significantly heavier, a large admixture of the heavy neutral Higgs bosons occurs as a generic feature if $\mathcal{CP}$-violating effects are taken into account. Including interference contributions in the predictions for cross sections times branching ratios of the Higgs bosons is essential in this case. As a first step, we present the gluon-fusion and bottom-quark annihilation cross sections for $h_a$ for the general case of arbitrary complex parameters, and we demonstrate that squark effects strongly depend on the phases of the complex parameters. We then study the effects of interference between $h_2$ and $h_3$ for the example of the process $b\bar{b} \to τ^+τ^-$. We show that large destructive interference effects modify LHC exclusion bounds such that parts of the parameter space that would be excluded by MSSM Higgs searches under the assumption of $\mathcal{CP}$-conservation open up when the possibility of $\mathcal{CP}$-violation in the Higgs sector is accounted for.

Probing new spin-independent interactions through precision spectroscopy in atoms with few electrons

The very high precision of current measurements and theory predictions of spectral lines in few-electron atoms allows to efficiently probe the existence of exotic forces between electrons, neutrons and protons. We investigate the sensitivity to new spin-independent interactions in transition frequencies (and their isotopic shifts) of hydrogen, helium and some helium-like ions. We find that present data probe new regions of the force-carrier couplings to electrons and neutrons around the MeV mass range. We also find that, below few keV, the sensitivity to the electron coupling in precision spectroscopy of helium and positronium is comparable to that of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron. Finally, we interpret our results in the dark-photon model where a new gauge boson is kinetically mixed with the photon. There, we show that helium transitions, combined with the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, provide the strongest indirect bound from laboratory experiments above 100keV.

Breit-Wigner approximation for propagators of mixed unstable states

For systems of unstable particles that mix with each other, an approximation of the fully momentum-dependent propagator matrix is presented in terms of a sum of simple Breit-Wigner propagators that are multiplied with finite on-shell wave function normalisation factors. The latter are evaluated at the complex poles of the propagators. The pole structure of general propagator matrices is carefully analysed, and it is demonstrated that in the proposed approximation imaginary parts arising from absorptive parts of loop integrals are properly taken into account. Applying the formalism to the neutral MSSM Higgs sector with complex parameters, very good numerical agreement is found between cross sections based on the full propagators and the corresponding cross sections based on the described approximation. The proposed approach does not only technically simplify the treatment of propagators with non-vanishing off-diagonal contributions, it is shown that it can also facilitate an improved theoretical prediction of the considered observables via a more precise implementation of the total widths of the involved particles. It is also well-suited for the incorporation of interference effects arising from overlapping resonances.

Phenomenology of relaxion-Higgs mixing

We show that the relaxion generically stops its rolling at a point that breaks CP leading to relaxion-Higgs mixing. This opens the door to a variety of observational probes since the possible relaxion mass spans a broad range from sub-eV to the GeV scale. We derive constraints from current experiments (fifth force, astrophysical and cosmological probes, beam dump, flavour, LEP and LHC) and present projections from future experiments such as NA62, SHiP and PIXIE. We find that a large region of the parameter space is already under the experimental scrutiny. All the experimental constraints we derive are equally applicable for general Higgs portal models. In addition, we show that simple multiaxion (clockwork) UV completions suffer from a mild fine tuning problem, which increases with the number of sites. These results favour a cut-off scale lower than the existing theoretical bounds.

Interference effects in MSSM Higgs searches at the LHC

Complex parameters in the MSSM lead to mixing and interference between the two heavier neutral CP-even and CP-odd Higgs states. These effects can become very large in the case of almost degenerate states. In a CP-violating benchmark scenario, we investigate phenomenological implications of such interferences in view of the LHC searches for heavy Higgs bosons decaying to a pair of $τ$-leptons and produced in gluon fusion and in association with b-quarks. Strongly destructive effects leave parameter regions unconstrained that would be regarded as excluded if no interference terms were taken into account.

Impact of CP-violating interference effects on MSSM Higgs searches

Interference and mixing effects between neutral Higgs bosons in the MSSM with complex parameters are shown to have a significant impact on the interpretation of LHC searches for additional Higgs bosons. Complex MSSM parameters introduce mixing between the CP-even and CP-odd Higgs states and generate CP-violating interference terms. Both effects are enhanced in the case of almost degenerate states. Employing as an example an extension of a frequently used benchmark scenario by a non-zero phase $ϕ_{A_t}$, the interference contributions are obtained for the production of neutral Higgs bosons in gluon-fusion and in association with b-quarks followed by the decay into a pair of $τ$-leptons. While the resonant mixing increases the individual cross sections for the two heavy Higgs bosons $h_2$ and $h_3$, strongly destructive interference effects between the contributions involving $h_2$ and $h_3$ leave a considerable parameter region unexcluded that would appear to be ruled out if the interference effects were neglected.

Constraining New Physics Models with Isotope Shift Spectroscopy

Isotope shifts of transition frequencies in atoms constrain generic long- and intermediate-range interactions. We focus on new physics scenarios that can be most strongly constrained by King Linearity Violation such as models with B-L vector bosons, Higgs portal and chameleon. With the anticipated precision, King Linearity Violation has the potential to set the strongest laboratory bounds on these models in some regions of parameter space. Furthermore, we show that this method can probe the couplings relevant for the protophobic interpretation of the recently reported Be anomaly. We extend the formalism to include an arbitrary number of transitions and isotope pairs and fit the new physics coupling to the currently available isotope shift measurements.

Probing new light force-mediators by isotope shift spectroscopy

In this Letter we explore the potential of probing new light force-carriers, with spin-independent couplings to the electron and the neutron, using precision isotope shift spectroscopy. We develop a formalism to interpret linear King plots as bounds on new physics with minimal theory inputs. We focus only on bounding the new physics contributions that can be calculated independently of the Standard Model nuclear effects. We apply our method to existing Ca+ data and project its sensitivity to possibly existing new bosons using narrow transitions in other atoms and ions (specifically, Sr and Yb). Future measurements are expected to improve the relative precision by five orders of magnitude, and can potentially lead to an unprecedented sensitivity for bosons within the 10 keV to 10 MeV mass range.

Interference effects of neutral MSSM Higgs bosons with a generalised narrow-width approximation

Mixing effects in the MSSM Higgs sector can give rise to a sizeable interference between the neutral Higgs bosons. On the other hand, factorising a more complicated process into production and decay parts by means of the narrow-width approximation (NWA) simplifies the calculation. The standard NWA, however, does not account for interference terms. Therefore, we introduce a generalisation of the NWA (gNWA) which allows for a consistent treatment of interference effects between nearly mass-degenerate particles. Furthermore, we apply the gNWA at the tree and 1-loop level to an example process where the neutral Higgs bosons $h$ and $H$ are produced in the decay of a heavy neutralino and subsequently decay into a fermion pair. The $h-H$ propagator mixing is found to agree well with the approximation of Breit-Wigner propagators times finite wave-function normalisation factors, both leading to a significant interference contribution. The factorisation of the interference term based on on-shell matrix elements reproduces the full interference result within a precision of better than 1% for the considered process. The gNWA also enables the inclusion of contributions beyond the 1-loop order into the most precise prediction.

Interference effects in BSM processes with a generalised narrow-width approximation

A generalisation of the narrow-width approximation (NWA) is formulated which allows for a consistent treatment of interference effects between nearly mass-degenerate particles in the factorisation of a more complicated process into production and decay parts. It is demonstrated that interference effects of this kind arising in BSM models can be very large, leading to drastic modifications of predictions based on the standard NWA. The application of the generalised NWA is demonstrated both at tree level and at one-loop order for an example process where the neutral Higgs bosons $h$ and $H$ of the MSSM are produced in the decay of a heavy neutralino and subsequently decay into a fermion pair. The generalised NWA, based on on-shell matrix elements or their approximations leading to simple weight factors, is shown to produce UV- and IR-finite results which are numerically close to the result of the full process at tree level and at one-loop order, where an agreement of better than $1\%$ is found for the considered process. The most accurate prediction for this process based on the generalised NWA, taking into account also corrections that are formally of higher orders, is briefly discussed.
