Constellation Design for Nonlinear Unified SWIPT Receiver Channels with Memory

Unified receivers (URs) have emerged as a promising architecture for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), since a common rectifying front-end enables information decoding (ID) and energy harvesting (EH) from the same rectified output. However, rectification is nonlinear due to the diode, while the capacitor introduces memory across symbols, making constellation design over the channel challenging. In this paper, we study constellation design for nonlinear UR-SWIPT channels in both memoryless and memory regimes. First, we propose a tractable unified rectification model that captures both (i) the nonlinear steady-state mapping and (ii) the asymmetric capacitor charging/discharging dynamics under transient operation. To isolate the impact of rectification with memory on ID, we study the information-based design. In this setting, we develop a state-adaptive policy with an algorithmic constellation design that accounts for the rectifier state and shapes the constellation in the observation domain. By approximating the rectifier state distribution, we derive a closed-form average symbol error rate (SER) expression and characterize the rate-reliability (R-R) tradeoff. We then seek constellations that minimize the SER under average transmit power and EH constraints. We address the resulting energy-constrained setting in the memoryless regime using an autoencoder-based framework that embeds the nonlinear rectification model as a differentiable channel block. Numerical results validate the proposed models, demonstrate the impact of memory on the R-R tradeoff, and show how learned constellations adapt to EH requirements in the rate-energy tradeoff.

Segment-Wise Soft Robotics Inspired Flexible Antenna Arrays: Design and Optimization

In this paper, we propose a segment-wise soft robotic antenna (SRA) system, where each soft robotic arm referred to as a tentacle, comprises multiple independently controllable segments with bending, elongation-retraction, and sweeping motions. By adjusting segment motion parameters, the positions of surface-mounted antennas are reconfigured, distinguishing it from conventional reconfigurable antenna (RA) systems. Based on this model, we propose two antenna deployment schemes: the segmented end-antenna configuration (SEAC), where fixed antennas are mounted at the segment ends and reconfigured via segment motions; and the hybrid end-and-intermediate antenna configuration (HEIAC), where RAs are further integrated as intra-segment antennas. In HEIAC, soft-robot segment deformation provides large-scale spatial reconfiguration, while RAs enable fine-grained adjustment. For SEAC, we formulate a sum-rate maximization problem accounting for inter-segment connectivity and the nonlinear mapping from segment deformation parameters to antenna coordinates, and develop a penalty dual decomposition-projected gradient ascent (PDD-PGA) algorithm. For HEIAC, we jointly optimize segment deformation, intra-segment antenna positions, and antenna activation using a block coordinate descent (BCD)-PDD-PGA algorithm with greedy backward antenna selection. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed schemes substantially outperform fixed-position antenna arrays and conventional RA baselines. In particular, SEAC and HEIAC achieve 37.9% and 32.1% sum-rate gains over conventional 3D reconfigurable arrays, respectively, while SEAC provides up to a 49.3% gain in compact array deployments.

Reconfigurable Antenna Arrays With Tunable Loads: Expanding Solution Space via Coupling Control

The emerging reconfigurable antenna (RA) array technology promises capacity enhancement through dynamic antenna positioning. Traditional approaches enforce half-wavelength or greater spacing among RA elements to avoid mutual coupling, limiting the solution space. Additionally, achieving sufficient spatial channel sampling requires numerous discrete RA positions (ports), while high-frequency scenarios with hybrid processing demand many physical RAs to maintain array gains. This leads to exponential growth in the solution space. In this work, we propose two techniques to address the former challenge: (1) surrounding a limited number of active RAs with passive ones terminated to tunable analog loads to \textit{exploit} mutual coupling and increase array gain, and (2) employing tunable loads on each RA in an all-active design to \textit{eliminate} mutual coupling in the analog domain. Both methods enable arbitrary RA spacing, unlocking the full solution space. Regarding the latter challenge, we develop greedy and meta-heuristic port selection algorithms, alongside low-complexity heuristic variants, that efficiently handle over $10^{20}$ array configurations. Furthermore, we optimize the loading values to maximize the sum-rate in a multiple-input single-output broadcast channel under transmission power constraints, assuming a heuristic linear precoder. In addition, we analyze performance degradation from quantized loads and propose corresponding robust designs. Numerical simulations reveal 20-56\% sum-rate gains over benchmarks and around 60\% performance recovery under quantization errors.

Soft Robotics-Inspired Flexible Antenna Arrays

In this work, a novel soft continuum robot-inspired antenna array is proposed, featuring tentacle-like structures with multiple antenna elements. The proposed array achieves reconfigurability through continuous deformation of its geometry, in contrast to reconfigurable antennas which incur a per-element control. More specifically, the deformation is modeled by amplitude and spatial frequency parameters. We consider a multi-user multiple-input single-output downlink system, whereby the optimal deformation parameters are found to maximize the sum rate in the network. A successive convex approximation method is adopted to solve the problem. Numerical results show that the proposed deformable array significantly outperforms fixed geometry and per-element reconfigurable arrays in sum rate, demonstrating the benefits of structure-level flexibility for next-generation antenna arrays.

Advanced Channel Coding Designs for Index-Modulated Fluid Antenna Systems

The concept of fluid antennas (FAs) has emerged as a promising solution to enhance the spectral efficiency of wireless networks, achieved by introducing additional degrees of freedom, including reconfigurability and flexibility. In this paper, we investigate the use of index-modulated (IM) transmissions within the framework of FA systems, where an FA position is activated during each transmission interval. This approach is motivated by the common characteristics exhibited by FAs and IM transmissions, which entails the use of a single radio-frequency chain. From this perspective, we derive a closed-form expression for the bit error rate of IM-FAs considering spatial correlation, and demonstrating superior performance compared to conventional IM systems. To enhance the performance of IM-FAs in correlated conditions, channel coding techniques are applied. We first analyze a set partition coding (SPC) scheme for IM-FAs to spatially separate the FA ports, and provide a tight performance bound over correlated channels. Furthermore, the spatial SPC scheme is extended to turbo-coded modulation where the performance is analyzed for low and high signal-to-noise ratios. Our results reveal that through the implementation of channel coding techniques designed for FAs and IM transmission, the performance of coded IM-FAs exhibits notable enhancements, particularly in high correlation scenarios.

A Novel Temperature-based Model for SWIPT

In this letter, a novel communication paradigm for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is proposed, which leverages the thermal characteristics of electromagnetic signals. In particular, the proposed scheme exploits the inherent thermal dynamics of electromagnetic signals, enabling the seamless integration of information decoding and energy harvesting (EH). As a consequence, in contrast to conventional SWIPT techniques, the proposed model eliminates the need to divide the received signal into orthogonal components. By exploiting the thermal correlation between consecutive time slots, the communication channel is converted to a virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel with memory. We evaluate the achievable rate of the proposed temperature-modulated channel for uniform and exponential input distributions and assess its performance in terms of harvested energy through a non-linear harvesting model. Our numerical results reveal that the exponential distribution outperforms the uniform distribution in rate and harvested energy at low input power levels, while the uniform distribution achieves a better EH performance at high input power levels.

Spatial Modulation with Energy Detection: Diversity Analysis and Experimental Evaluation

In this paper, we present a non-coherent energy detection scheme for spatial modulation (SM) systems. In particular, the use of SM is motivated by its low-complexity implementation in comparison to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, achieved through the activation of a single antenna during transmission. Moreover, energy detection-based communications restrict the channel state information to the magnitude of the fading gains. This consideration makes the design applicable for low-cost low-powered devices since phase estimation and its associated circuitry are avoided. We derive an energy detection metric for a multi-antenna receiver based on the maximum-likelihood (ML) criterion. By considering a biased pulse amplitude modulation, we develop an analytical framework for the SM symbol error rate at high signal-to-noise ratios. Numerical results show that the diversity order is proportional to half the number of receive antennas; this result stems from having partial receiver channel knowledge. In addition, we compare the performance of the proposed scheme with that of the coherent ML receiver and show that the SM energy detector outperforms its coherent counterpart in certain scenarios, particularly when utilizing non-negative constellations. Ultimately, we implement an SM testbed using software-defined radio devices and provide experimental error rate measurements that validate our theoretical contribution.
