Robust surface states and coherence phenomena in magnetically alloyed SmB6

Samarium hexaboride is a candidate for the topological Kondo insulator state, in which Kondo coherence is predicted to give rise to an insulating gap spanned by topological surface states. Here we investigate the surface and bulk electronic properties of magnetically alloyed Sm1-xMxB6 (M=Ce, Eu), using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and complementary characterization techniques. Remarkably, topologically nontrivial bulk and surface band structures are found to persist in highly modified samples with up to 30% Sm substitution, and to coexist with antiferromagnetism in the case of Eu doping. The results are interpreted in terms of a hierarchy of energy scales, in which surface state emergence is linked to the formation of a direct Kondo gap, while low temperature transport trends depend on the indirect gap.

Emergent of the flat band and superstructures in the VSe2 / Bi2Se3 system

Dispersionless flat bands are proposed to be a fundamental ingredient to achieve the various sought after quantum states of matter including high-temperature superconductivity1-4 and fractional quantum Hall effect5-6. Materials with such peculiar electronic states, however, are very rare and often exhibit very complex band structures. Here, we report on the emergence of a flat band with a possible insulating ground state in the sub-monolayer VSe2 / Bi2Se3 heterostructure by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. The flat band is dispersionless along the kll and kz momenta, filling the entire Brillouin zone, and it exhibits a complex circular dichroism signal reversing the sign at several points of the Brillouin zone. These properties together with the presence of a Moiré patterns in VSe2 suggest that the flat band is not a trivial disorder or confinement effect and could even be topologically non-trivial. Another intriguing finding is that the flat band does not modify the Dirac cone of Bi2Se3 around the Dirac point. Furthermore, we found that the flat band and the Dirac surface states of Bi2Se3 have opposite energy shifts with electron doping. This opens a novel way of controlling the spin texture of photocurrents as well as the transport properties of the heterostructure. These features make this flat band remarkably distinguishable from previous findings and our methodology can be applied to other systems opening a promising pathway to realize strongly correlated quantum effects in topological materials.

Second derivative analysis and alternative data filters for multi-dimensional spectroscopies: a Fourier-space perspective

The second derivative image (SDI) method is widely applied to sharpen dispersive data features in multi-dimensional spectroscopies such as angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Here, the SDI function is represented in Fourier space, where it has the form of a multi-band pass filter. The interplay of the SDI procedure with undesirable noise and background features in ARPES data sets is reviewed, and it is shown that final image quality can be improved by eliminating higher Fourier harmonics of the SDI filter. We then discuss extensions of SDI-like band pass filters to higher dimensional data sets, and how one can create even more effective filters with some a priori knowledge of the spectral features.

Dirac fermions and flat bands in the ideal kagome metal FeSn

The kagome lattice based on 3d transition metals is a versatile platform for novel topological phases hosting symmetry-protected electronic excitations and exotic magnetic ground states. However, the paradigmatic states of the idealized two-dimensional (2D) kagome lattice - Dirac fermions and topological flat bands - have not been simultaneously observed, partly owing to the complex stacking structure of the kagome compounds studied to date. Here, we take the approach of examining FeSn, an antiferromagnetic single-layer kagome metal with spatially-decoupled kagome planes. Using polarization- and termination-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we detect the momentum-space signatures of coexisting flat bands and Dirac fermions in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. Intriguingly, when complemented with bulk-sensitive de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements, our data reveal an even richer electronic structure that exhibits robust surface Dirac fermions on specific crystalline terminations. Through band structure calculations and matrix element simulations, we demonstrate that the bulk Dirac bands arise from in-plane localized Fe-3d orbitals under kagome symmetry, while the surface state realizes a rare example of fully spin-polarized 2D Dirac fermions when combined with spin-layer locking in FeSn. These results highlight FeSn as a prototypical host for the emergent excitations of the kagome lattice. The prospect to harness these excitations for novel topological phases and spintronic devices is a frontier of great promise at the confluence of topology, magnetism, and strongly-correlated electron physics.

Robust isothermal electric switching of interface magnetization: A route to voltage-controlled spintronics

Roughness-insensitive and electrically controllable magnetization at the (0001) surface of antiferromagnetic chromia is observed using magnetometry and spin-resolved photoemission measurements and explained by the interplay of surface termination and magnetic ordering. Further, this surface in placed in proximity with a ferromagnetic Co/Pd multilayer film. Exchange coupling across the interface between chromia and Co/Pd induces an electrically controllable exchange bias in the Co/Pd film, which enables a reversible isothermal (at room temperature) shift of the global magnetic hysteresis loop of the Co/Pd film along the magnetic field axis between negative and positive values. These results reveal the potential of magnetoelectric chromia for spintronic applications requiring non-volatile electric control of magnetization.
