Recovery of an Anisotropic Conductivity from the Neumann-to-Dirichlet Map in a Semilinear Elliptic Equation

We study the inverse boundary value problem of detecting a non-uniform conductivity motivated by pacing-guided ablation in cardiac electrophysiology. At the stationary level, the transmembrane potential $u$ in a region \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^3\) of cardiac tissue satisfies \[ -\nabla\!\cdot(\gamma\nabla u)+\alpha u^3=0 \quad \text{in }\Omega,\qquad \gamma\nabla u\cdot\nu=g \quad \text{on }\partial\Omega, \] where $\gamma$ is an anisotropic conductivity tensor and $\alpha$ a nonlinear ionic response coefficient. The Neumann data $g$ represent pacing currents, and the boundary values $u|_{\partial\Omega}$ correspond to invasive voltage measurements. Ischemic regions are modeled by a subdomain $D\subset\Omega$ where $\gamma$ is piecewise constant. We address the inverse problem of determining $\gamma$ from the Neumann-to-Dirichlet (NtD) map, assuming that $\alpha$ and $D$ are known. To our knowledge, uniqueness in the case of NtD data with anisotropic conductivities in this nonlinear setting has not been analyzed in previous work. Using a first-order linearization around a nontrivial pacing current, we prove uniqueness for $\gamma$.

Lipschitz Stability for Polyhedral Elastic Inclusions from Partial Data

The paper deals with the inverse problem of determining a polyhedral inclusion compactly contained in an elastic body from boundary measurements of traction and displacement taken on an open portion of the boundary. Both the inclusion and the body are made of homogeneous isotropic material. Under suitable assumptions on the geometry of the unknown inclusion, we prove a constructive Lipschitz stability estimate from the local Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.

Doubling Inequality and Strong Unique Continuation for an Elliptic Transmission Problem

We investigate the Strong Unique Continuation Property (SUCP) for elliptic equations with piecewise Lipschitz coefficients exhibiting jump discontinuities across a regular interface. We prove SUCP at the interface using a doubling inequality derived from a Carleman estimate with a singular weight. This result is intended as a first step toward solving the inverse problem of estimating the size of an unknown, merely measurable, inclusion inside a conductor from boundary measurements.

The Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the first eigenvalue of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator and log-concavity of the relevant eigenfunction

We prove that the first (nontrivial) Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator $$ L(u)=Δu-\langle\nabla u,x\rangle\,, $$ as a function of the domain, is convex with respect to the Minkowski addition, and we characterize the equality cases in some classes of convex sets. We also prove that the corresponding (positive) eigenfunction is log-concave if the domain is convex.

On an inverse problem with applications in cardiac electrophysiology

In this paper, we consider the monodomain model of cardiac electrophysiology. After an analysis of the well-posedness of the forward problem, we show that perfectly insulating regions (modeling ischemic regions in the cardiac tissue) can be uniquely determined by partial boundary measurements of the potential.

Early-warning inverse source problem for the elasto-gravitational equations

Through coupled physics, we study an early-warning inverse source problem for the elasto-gravitational equations. It consists of a mixed hyperbolic-elliptic system of partial differential equations describing elastic wave displacement and gravity perturbations produced by a source in a homogeneous bounded medium. Within the Cowling approximation, we prove uniqueness and Lipschitz stability for the inverse problem of recovering the moment tensor and the location of the source from early-time measurements of the changes of the gravitational field. The setup studied in this paper is motivated by gravity-based earthquake early warning systems, which are gaining much attention recently.

Lipschitz stable determination of polyhedral conductivity inclusions from local boundary measurements

We consider the problem of determining a polyhedral conductivity inclusion embedded in a homogeneous isotropic medium from boundary measurements. We prove global Lipschitz stability for the polyhedral inclusion from the local Dirichlet-to-Neumann map extending in a highly nontrivial way the results obtained in [18] and [19] in the two-dimensional case to the three-dimensional setting.

Lipschitz stable determination of polygonal conductivity inclusions in a layered medium from the Dirichlet to Neumann map

Using a distributed representation formula of the Gateaux derivative of the Dirichlet to Neumann map with respect to movements of a polygonal conductivity inclusion, [11], we extend the results obtained in [8] proving global Lipschitz stability for the determination of a polygonal conductivity inclusion embedded in a layered medium from knowledge of the Dirichlet to Neumann map.

Propagation of smallness and size estimate in the second order elliptic equation with discontinuous complex Lipschitz conductivity

In this paper, we would like to derive three-ball inequalities and propagation of smallness for the complex second order elliptic equation with discontinuous Lipschitz coefficients. As an application of such estimates, we study the size estimate problem by one pair of Cauchy data on the boundary. The main ingredient in the derivation of three-ball inequalities and propagation of smallness is a local Carleman proved in our recent paper [FVW].

Existence and regularity for eddy currents system with non-smooth conductivity

We discuss the well-posedness of the 'transient eddy current' magneto-quasistatic approximation of Maxwell's initial value problem with bounded and measurable conductivity, with sources, on a domain. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions, and we provide global Hoelder estimates for the magnetic part.

A transmission problem on a polygonal partition: regularity and shape differentiability

We consider a transmission problem on a polygonal partition for the two-dimensional conductivity equation. For suitable classes of partitions we establish the exact behaviour of the gradient of solutions in a neighbourhood of the vertexes of the partition. This allows to prove shape differentiability of solutions and to establish an explicit formula for the shape derivative.

Carleman estimates for the parabolic transmission problem and Hölder propagation of smallness across an interface

In this paper we prove a Hölder propagation of smallness for solutions to second order parabolic equations whose general anisotropic leading coefficient has a jump at an interface. We assume that the leading coefficient is Lipschitz continuous with respect to the parabolic distance on both sides of the interface. The main effort consists in proving a local Carleman estimate for this parabolic operator.

Stability for Quantitative Photoacoustic Tomography with well chosen illuminations

We treat the stability issue for the three dimensional inverse imaging modality called Quantitative Photoacoustic Tomography. We provide universal choices of the illuminations which enable to recover, in a Hölder stable fashion, the diffusion and absorption coefficients from the interior pressure data. With such choices of illuminations we do not need the nondegeneracy conditions commonly used in previous studies, which are difficult to be verified a-priori.

Lipschitz continuous dependence of piecewise constant Lamé coefficients from boundary data: the case of non flat interfaces

We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé moduli for a piecewise constant elasticity tensor ${\mathbb C}= \sum_{j} {\mathbb C}_j χ_{D_j}$, where $\{D_j\}$ is a known finite partition of the body $Ω$, from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove that Lipschitz stability estimates can be derived under $C^{1,α}$ regularity assumptions on the interfaces.
