Tonnetz-Driven Graph Wedgelet for Harmonic Complexity Reduction in Music Scores

Heterogeneous graph built on notes, lyric syllables, and accompaniment events is a natural representation of symbolic music score, providing a substrate for both philological analysis and computational tasks. Music features are therefore well-captured by graph geometry and its properties. This representation has proved effective for analytical tasks as cadence detection, voice separation, and stylistic classification. In the present work, the reduction of harmonic complexity of a music score on graph, by preserving task-relevant information, relation between notes, and graph structure is investigated. A compression scheme for the piano subgraph of vocal-pianistic scores, built on binary wedge partitioning trees, is proposed. The wedges are generated through a fully adaptive greedy algorithm that recursively minimizes the $L^2$-error within a six-dimensional Tonnetz embedding of musical notes. The partitioning process employs a splitting criterion based on harmonic distance, resulting in regions that accurately reflect the intrinsic harmonic relationships among notes. The reconstructed music scores obtained through piecewise-constant functions and the mean values of the notes inside each wedge are used as a new simplified scores human-readable and playable. Some experiments on a corpus of symbolic music scores of three different composers are performed to assess the proposed approach.

Advanced Scientific Methodology Plays Rossini

A musical score provides the essential instructions for its performance while containing indications - at times implicit - regarding the composer's intentions. The presence of authorial variants, and even more so complex series of revisions associated with a single text, presents a challenging path for analytical study. This research, situated within the application of Scientific Methodologies to Music Philology, proposes a methodological approach oriented toward the structural analysis of one of the many settings composed by Gioachino Rossini on the same Metastasio arietta ``Mi lagner\`o tacendo''. Through Computational Analysis - incorporating parsing, data mining, and graph theory - the melodic, harmonic, and textual compositional choices have been rigorously explored. The results constitute a significant unicum in the field, laying the foundation for a systematic study that supports philological research and paves the way for the use of generative models to investigate the creative process.

Multinode Shepard collocation method for pricing of financial derivatives

This paper explores the use of the multinode Shepard method for the numerical solution of the two-dimensional Black-Scholes equation. The proposed approach integrates a spatial approximation via the multinode Shepard operator with a temporal discretization based on the Backward Difference Formula. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the method.

Polynomial mapped bases: theory and applications

In this paper, we collect the basic theory and the most important applications of a novel technique that has shown to be suitable for scattered data interpolation, quadrature, bio-imaging reconstruction. The method relies on polynomial mapped bases allowing, for instance, to incorporate data or function discontinuities in a suitable mapping function. The new technique substantially mitigates the Runge's and Gibbs effects.

Beyond the mesh handling Maxwell's curl equations with an unconditionally leapfrog stable scheme

Numerical solution of equations governing time domain simulations in computational electromagnetics, is usually based on grid methods in space and on explicit schemes for the time evolution. A predefined grid in the problem domain and a stability step size restriction must be accepted. Evidence is given that efforts need for overcoming these heavy constraints. Recently, the authors developed a meshless method to avoid the connective laws among the points scattered in the problem domain. Despite the good spatial properties, the numerical explicit integration used in the original formulation of the method provides, also in a meshless context, spatial and time discretization strictly interleaved and mutually conditioned. Afterwards, in this paper the stability condition is firstly addressed in a general way by allowing the time step increment get away from the minimum points spacing. Meanwhile, a formulation of the alternating direction implicit scheme for the evolution in time is combined with the meshless solver. The formulation preserves the leapfrog marching on in time of the explicit integration scheme. The new method, not constrained by a gridding in space and unconditionally stable in time, is numerical assessed by different numerical simulations. Perfect matching layer technique is used in simulating open spatial problems; otherwise, a consistency restoring approach is introduced in treating truncation at finite boundary and irregular points distribution. Three case studies are investigated by achieving a satisfactory agreement comparing both numerical and analytical results.

A numerical method for imaging of biological microstructures by VHF waves

Imaging techniques give a fundamental support to medical diagnostics during the pathology discovery as well as for the characterization of biological structures. The imaging methods involve electromagnetic waves in a frequency range that spans from some Hz to GHz and over. Most of these methods involve scanning of wide human body areas even if only small areas need to be analyzed. In this paper, a numerical method to evaluate the shape of micro-structures for application in the medical field, with a very low invasiveness for the human body, is proposed. A flexible thin-wire antenna radiates the VHF waves and then, by measuring the spatial magnetic field distribution it is possible to reconstruct the micro-structures image by estimating the location of the antenna against a sensors panel. The typical inverse problem described above is solved numerically, and first simulation results are presented in order to show the validity and the robustness of the proposed approach.
