Vehicle Routing with Drones

We introduce a package service model where trucks as well as drones can deliver packages. Drones can travel on trucks or fly; but while flying, drones can only carry one package at a time and have to return to a truck to charge after each delivery. We present a heuristic algorithm to solve the problem of finding a good schedule for all drones and trucks. The algorithm is based on two nested local searches, thus the definition of suitable neighbourhoods of solutions is crucial for the algorithm. Empirical tests show that our algorithm performs significantly better than a natural Greedy algorithm. Moreover, the savings compared to solutions without drones turn out to be substantial, suggesting that delivery systems might considerably benefit from using drones in addition to trucks.

Nash Equilibria And Partition Functions Of Games With Many Dependent Players

We discuss and solve a model for a game with many players, where a subset of truely deciding players is embedded into a hierarchy of dependent agents. These interdependencies modify the game matrix and the Nash equilibria for the deciding players. In a concrete example, we recognize the partition function of the Ising model and for high dependency we observe a phase transition to a new Nash equilibrium, which is the Pareto-efficient outcome. An example we have in mind is the game theory for major shareholders in a stock market, where intermediate companies decide according to a majority vote of their owners and compete for the final profit. In our model, these interdependency eventually forces cooperation.

Anomalies in quantum field theory: Properties and characterization

We consider the Adler-Bardeen anomaly of the U(1) axial current in abelian and non-abelian gauge theories and present its algebraic characterization as well as an explicit evaluation proving regularization scheme independence of the anomaly. By extending the gauge coupling to an external space-time dependent field we get a unique definition for the quantum corrections of the topological term. It also implies a simple proof of the non-renormalization theorem of the Adler-Bardeen anomaly. We consider local gauge couplings in supersymmetric theories and find that there the renormalization of the gauge coupling is determined by the topological term in all loop orders except for one loop. It is shown that in one-loop order the quantum corrections to the topological term induce an anomalous breaking of supersymmetry, which is characterized by similar properties as the Adler-Bardeen anomaly.

Non-renormalization theorems from extension to local coupling

The extension of coupling constants to space-time dependent fields, the local couplings, makes possible to derive the non-renormalization theorems of supersymmetry by an algebraic characterization of Lagrangian N=1 supermultiplets. For super-Yang-Mills theories the construction implies non-renormalization of the coupling beyond one-loop order. However, renormalization in presence of the local gauge coupling is peculiar due to a new anomaly in one-loop order, which appears as an anomaly of supersymmetry in the Wess-Zumino gauge. As an application we derive the closed all-order expression for the gauge $β$ function and prove the non-renormalization of general N=2 supersymmetric theories from a cancellation of the susy anomaly.

Renormalization of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The renormalization of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is presented. We describe symmetry identities that constitute a framework in which the MSSM is completely characterized and renormalizability can be proven. Furthermore, we discuss applications of this framework for the determination of symmetry-restoring counterterms, the gauge dependence of tan(beta) and the derivation of non-renormalization theorems.

Renormalization of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The renormalization of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model of electroweak interactions is presented to all orders of perturbation theory using the algebraic method. Special attention is directed to the issues of soft supersymmetry breaking, gauge fixing, and infrared finiteness. We discuss the implications of $\hbar$-dependent field parametrizations on the counterterm structure and provide a complete set of on-shell normalization conditions.

Supercurrent and Local Coupling in the Wess-Zumino Model

We study the Wess-Zumino model with the coupling extended to a chiral superfield. In order to incorporate the renormalization effects a further external real field has to be introduced. It is then possible to derive a Callan-Symanzik equation and to prove renormalizability. By constructing the supercurrent in this context the whole machinery for describing the superconformal symmetries becomes available. The presence of the external fields allows also to define multiple insertions of all relevant composite operators. Interesting relations to the curved superspace treatment show up.

Softly broken supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories: Renormalization and non-renormalization theorems

We present a minimal version for the renormalization of softly broken Super-Yang-Mills theories using the extended model with a local gauge coupling. It is shown that the non-renormalization theorems of the case with unbroken supersymmetry are valid without modifications and that the renormalization of soft-breaking parameters is completely governed by the renormalization of the supersymmetric parameters. The symmetry identities in the present context are peculiar, since the extended model contains two anomalies: the Adler-Bardeen anomaly of the axial current and an anomaly of supersymmetry in the presence of the local gauge coupling. From the anomalous symmetries we derive the exact all-order expressions for the beta functions of the gauge coupling and of the soft-breaking parameters. They generalize earlier results to arbitrary normalization conditions and imply the NSVZ expressions for a specific normalization condition on the coupling.

Calculating the anomalous supersymmetry breaking in Super-Yang-Mills theories with local coupling

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills-theories with local gauge coupling have a new type of anomalous breaking, which appears as a breaking of supersymmetry in the Wess-Zumino-gauge. The anomalous breaking generates the two-loop order of the gauge $β$-function in terms of the one-loop $β$-function and the anomaly coefficient. We determine the anomaly coefficient in the Wess-Zumino-gauge by solving the relevant supersymmetry identities. For this purpose we use a background gauge and show that the anomaly coefficient is uniquely determined by convergent one-loop integrals. When evaluating the one-loop diagrams in the background gauge, it is seen that the anomaly coefficient is determined by the Feynman-gauge value of the one-loop vertex function to the topological term $G \tilde G$ at vanishing momenta.

An anomalous breaking of supersymmetry in supersymmetric gauge theories with local coupling

We extend the gauge coupling of Super-Yang-Mills theories to an external superfield composed out of a chiral and an antichiral superfield and perform renormalization in the extended model. In one-loop order we find an anomalous breaking of supersymmetry which vanishes in the limit to constant coupling. The anomaly arises form non-local contributions and its coefficient is gauge and scheme independent and strictly of one-loop order. In the perturbative framework of the construction the anomaly cannot be absorbed as a counterterm to the classical action. With local gauge coupling the symmetric counterterms with chiral integration are holomorphic functions and this property is independent from the specific regularization scheme. Thus, the symmetric counterterm to the Yang-Mills part is of one-loop order only - and it is the anomaly which gives rise to the two-loop order of the gauge $β$-function in pure Super-Yang-Mills theories and to its closed all-order expression.

Renormalization of the Electroweak Standard Model

These lecture notes give an introduction to the algebraic renormalization of the Standard Model. We start with the construction of the tree approximation and give the classical action and its defining symmetries in functional form. These are the Slavnov-Taylor identity, Ward identities of rigid symmetry and the abelian local Ward identity. The abelian Ward identity ensures coupling of the electromagnetic current in higher orders of perturbation theory, and is the functional form of the Gell-Mann-Nishijima relation. In the second part of the lectures we present in simple examples the basic properties of renormalized perturbation theory: scheme dependence of counterterms and the quantum action principle. Together with an algebraic characterization of the defining symmetry transformations they are the ingredients for a scheme independent unique construction of Green's functions to all orders of perturbation theory.

The Callan-Symanzik equation of the electroweak Standard Model and its 1-loop functions

We derive the Callan-Symanzik equation of the electroweak Standard Model in the QED-like on-shell parameterization. The various coefficient functions, the $β$-functions and anomalous dimensions, are determined in one-loop order in the most general linear gauge compatible with rigid symmetry. In this way the basic elements for a systematic investigation of higher-order leading logarithmic contributions in the Standard Model are provided. The one-loop $β$-function of the electromagnetic coupling turns out to be independent of mass ratios and it is QED-like in this sense. Besides the QED-contributions of fermions it contains non-abelian contributions from vectors and ghosts with negative sign, which overcompensate the contributions of the fermions if one restricts the latter to one fermion generation. We also compare our results with the symmetric theory and give relations between the $β$-functions of the spontaneously broken and the symmetric theory valid in one-loop order.

Gauge parameter dependence in the background field gauge and the construction of an invariant charge

By using the enlarged BRS transformations we control the gauge parameter dependence of Green functions in the background field gauge. We show that it is unavoidable -- also if we consider the local Ward identity -- to introduce the normalization gauge parameter $ξ_o$, which enters the Green functions of higher orders similarly to the normalization point $κ$. The dependence of Green functions on $ξ_o$ is governed by a further partial differential equation. By modifying the Ward identity we are able to construct in 1-loop order a gauge parameter independent combination of 2-point vector and background vector functions. By explicit construction of the next orders we show that this combination can be used to construct a gauge parameter independent RG-invariant charge. However, it is seen that this RG-invariant charge does not satisfy the differential equation of the normalization gauge parameter $ξ_o$, and, hence, is not $ξ_o$-independent as required.

The Renormalization of the Electroweak Standard Model to All Orders

We give the renormalization of the standard model of electroweak interactions to all orders of perturbation theory by using the method of algebraic renormalization, which is based on general properties of renormalized perturbation theory and not on a specific regularization scheme. The Green functions of the standard model are uniquely constructed to all orders, if one defines the model by the Slavnov-Taylor identity, Ward-identities of rigid symmetry and a specific form of the abelian local gauge Ward-identity, which continues the Gell-Mann Nishijima relation to higher orders. Special attention is directed to the mass diagonalization of massless and massive neutral vectors and ghosts. For obtaining off-shell infrared finite expressions it is required to take into account higher order corrections into the functional symmetry operators. It is shown, that the normalization conditions of the on-shell schemes are in agreement with the most general symmetry transformations allowed by the algebraic constraints.

Rigid Invariance in Gauge Theories

Rigid gauge invariance comprises the symmetry content for physical quantities in a local gauge theory. Its derivation from BRS invariance is thus crucial for determining the physical consequences of the symmetry.
