Approximation of the Euclidean ball by polytopes with a fixed number of $k$-faces

We derive lower estimates for the approximation of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean ball by polytopes with a fixed number of $k$-dimensional faces, $k\in\{0,1,\ldots,d-1\}$. The metrics considered include the intrinsic volume difference and the Hausdorff metric. In the case of inscribed and circumscribed polytopes, our main results extend the previously obtained bounds from $k=0$ and $k=d-1$, respectively, to half of the $f$-vector of the approximating polytope. For arbitrarily positioned polytopes, we also improve a special case of a result of K. J. B\"or\"oczky ({\it J. Approx. Theory}, 2000) by a factor of dimension. This paper addresses a question of P. M. Gruber ({\it Convex and Discrete Geometry}, p. 216), who asked for results on the approximation of convex bodies by polytopes with a fixed number of $k$-faces when $1\leq k\leq d-2$.

Spherical convex hull of random points on a wedge

Consider two half-spaces $H_1^+$ and $H_2^+$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ whose bounding hyperplanes $H_1$ and $H_2$ are orthogonal and pass through the origin. The intersection $\mathbb{S}_{2,+}^d:=\mathbb{S}^d\cap H_1^+\cap H_2^+$ is a spherical convex subset of the $d$-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$, which contains a great subsphere of dimension $d-2$ and is called a spherical wedge. Choose $n$ independent random points uniformly at random on $\mathbb{S}_{2,+}^d$ and consider the expected facet number of the spherical convex hull of these points. It is shown that, up to terms of lower order, this expectation grows like a constant multiple of $\log n$. A similar behaviour is obtained for the expected facet number of a homogeneous Poisson point process on $\mathbb{S}_{2,+}^d$. The result is compared to the corresponding behaviour of classical Euclidean random polytopes and of spherical random polytopes on a half-sphere.

Orbifold Jacobian algebras for exceptional unimodal singularities

This note shows that the orbifold Jacobian algebra associated to each invertible polynomial defining an exceptional unimodal singularity is isomorphic to the (usual) Jacobian algebra of the Berglund-Hübsch transform of an invertible polynomial defining the strange dual singularity in the sense of Arnold.

Orbifold Jacobian algebras for invertible polynomials

An important invariant of a polynomial $f$ is its Jacobian algebra defined by its partial derivatives. Let $f$ be invariant with respect to the action of a finite group of diagonal symmetries $G$. We axiomatically define an orbifold Jacobian $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebra for the pair $(f,G)$ and show its existence and uniqueness in the case, when $f$ is an invertible polynomial. In case when $f$ defines an ADE singularity, we illustrate its geometric meaning.

On the geometry of projective tensor products

In this work, we study the volume ratio of the projective tensor products $\ell^n_p\otimes_π\ell_q^n\otimes_π\ell_r^n$ with $1\leq p\leq q \leq r \leq \infty$. We obtain asymptotic formulas that are sharp in almost all cases. As a consequence of our estimates, these spaces allow for a nearly Euclidean decomposition of Kashin type whenever $1\leq p \leq q\leq r \leq 2$ or $1\leq p \leq 2 \leq r \leq \infty$ and $q=2$. Also, from the Bourgain-Milman bound on the volume ratio of Banach spaces in terms of their cotype $2$ constant, we obtain information on the cotype of these $3$-fold projective tensor products. Our results naturally generalize to $k$-fold products $\ell_{p_1}^n\otimes_π\dots \otimes_π\ell_{p_k}^n$ with $k\in\mathbb N$ and $1\leq p_1 \leq \dots\leq p_k \leq \infty$.

The Spherical Convex Floating Body

For a convex body on the Euclidean unit sphere the spherical convex floating body is introduced. The asymptotic behavior of the volume difference of a spherical convex body and its spherical floating body is investigated. This gives rise to a new spherical area measure, the floating area. Remarkably, this floating area turns out to be a spherical analogue to the classical affine surface area from affine differential geometry. Several properties of the floating area are established.

Relative entropies for convex bodies

We introduce a new class of (not necessarily convex) bodies and show, among other things, that these bodies provide yet another link between convex geometric analysis and information theory. Namely, they give geometric interpretations of the relative entropy of the cone measures of a convex body and its polar and related quantities. Such interpretations were first given by Paouris and Werner for symmetric convex bodies in the context of the $L_p$-centroid bodies. There, the relative entropies appear after performing second order expansions of certain expressions. Now, no symmetry assumptions are needed. Moreover, using the new bodies, already first order expansions make the relative entropies appear. Thus, these bodies detect "faster" details of the boundary of a convex body than the $L_p$-centroid bodies.

How often is a random quantum state k-entangled?

The set of trace preserving, positive maps acting on density matrices of size d forms a convex body. We investigate its nested subsets consisting of k-positive maps, where k=2,...,d. Working with the measure induced by the Hilbert-Schmidt distance we derive asymptotically tight bounds for the volumes of these sets. Our results strongly suggest that the inner set of (k+1)-positive maps forms a small fraction of the outer set of k-positive maps. These results are related to analogous bounds for the relative volume of the sets of k-entangled states describing a bipartite d X d system.

Hastings' additivity counterexample via Dvoretzky's theorem

The goal of this note is to show that Hastings' counterexample to the additivity of minimal output von Neumann entropy can be readily deduced from a sharp version of Dvoretzky's theorem on almost spherical sections of convex bodies.

Non-additivity of Renyi entropy and Dvoretzky's Theorem

The goal of this note is to show that the analysis of the minimum output p-Renyi entropy of a typical quantum channel essentially amounts to applying Milman's version of Dvoretzky's Theorem about almost Euclidean sections of high-dimensional convex bodies. This conceptually simplifies the (nonconstructive) argument by Hayden-Winter disproving the additivity conjecture for the minimal output p-Renyi entropy (for p>1).

Inequalities for mixed $p$-affine surface area

We prove new Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities and new affine isoperimetric inequalities for mixed $p$-affine surface areas. We introduce a new class of bodies, the illumination surface bodies, and establish some of their properties. We show, for instance, that they are not necessarily convex. We give geometric interpretations of $L_p$ affine surface areas, mixed $p$-affine surface areas and other functionals via these bodies. The surprising new element is that not necessarily convex bodies provide the tool for these interpretations.

Uniform estimates for order statistics and Orlicz functions

We establish uniform estimates for order statistics of sequences of independent identically distributed random variables with log-concave distribution in terms of Orlicz norms associated with the distribution function of the random variables.

New $L_p$ Affine Isoperimetric Inequalities

We prove new $L_p$ affine isoperimetric inequalities for all $ p \in [-\infty,1)$. We establish, for all $p\neq -n$, a duality formula which shows that $L_p$ affine surface area of a convex body $K$ equals $L_\frac{n^2}{p}$ affine surface area of the polar body $K^\circ$.

Geometry of sets of quantum maps: a generic positive map acting on a high-dimensional system is not completely positive

We investigate the set a) of positive, trace preserving maps acting on density matrices of size N, and a sequence of its nested subsets: the sets of maps which are b) decomposable, c) completely positive, d) extended by identity impose positive partial transpose and e) are superpositive. Working with the Hilbert-Schmidt (Euclidean) measure we derive tight explicit two-sided bounds for the volumes of all five sets. A sample consequence is the fact that, as N increases, a generic positive map becomes not decomposable and, a fortiori, not completely positive. Due to the Jamiolkowski isomorphism, the results obtained for quantum maps are closely connected to similar relations between the volume of the set of quantum states and the volumes of its subsets (such as states with positive partial transpose or separable states) or supersets. Our approach depends on systematic use of duality to derive quantitative estimates, and on various tools of classical convexity, high-dimensional probability and geometry of Banach spaces, some of which are not standard.

An Analysis of Completely-Positive Trace-Preserving Maps on 2x2 Matrices

We give a useful new characterization of the set of all completely positive, trace-preserving (i.e., stochastic) maps from 2x2 matrices to 2x2 matrices. These conditions allow one to easily check any trace-preserving map for complete positivity. We also determine explicitly all extreme points of this set, and give a useful parameterization after reduction to a certain canonical form. This allows a detailed examination of an important class of non-unital extreme points which can be characterized as having exactly two images on the Bloch sphere. We also discuss a number of related issues about the images and the geometry of the set of stochastic maps, and show that any stochastic map on 2x2 matrices can be written as a convex combination of two "generalized" extreme points.

Study of a Class of Regularizations of 1/|x| using Gaussian Integrals

This paper presents a comprehensive study of a class of functions which approximate 1/|x| for large x but which are finite at the origin. These functions arise naturally in the study of atoms in strong magnetic fields where the so-called "Landau states" give rise to Gaussian integrals. Generalizations in which e^{-x^2} is replaced by e^{-x^p} are also considered and approximate x^{1-p} for large x. The limiting behavior and monotonicity properties of these functions are discussed in terms of parameters which arise in the approximations as well as x. Several classes of inequalities, some of which provide tight bounds, are established. Some differential equations and recursion relations satisfied by these functions are given. The recursion relations give rise to two classes of polynomials, one of which is related to confluent hypergeometric functions. Finally, it is shown that the inverse of the approximating function is convex and this implies an analogue of the triangle inequality. Some comments are made about possible extensions and several open questions are raised.

One Dimensional Regularizations of the Coulomb Potential with Application to Atoms in Strong Magnetic Fields

We consider one-dimensional regularizations of the Coulomb potential formed by taking a two-dimensional expectation of the Coulomb potential with respect to the Landau states. It is well-known that such functions arises naturally in the study of atoms in strong magnetic fields. For many-electron atoms consideration of the Pauli principle requires convex combinations of such potentials and interactions in which the regularizations also contain a 2^{-1/2} rescaling. We summarize the results of a comprehensive study of these functions including recursion relations, tight bounds, convexity properties, and connections with confluent hypergeometric functions. We also report briefly on their application in one-dimensional models of many-electrons atoms in strong magnetic fields.

On the p-affine surface area

We give geometric interpretations of certain affine invariants of convex bodies. The affine invariants are the p-affine surface areas introduced by Lutwak. The geometric interpretations involve generalizations of the Santaló-bodies introduced by the authors in a previous paper.
