Trajectory attractors for the Sun-Liu model for nematic liquid crystals in 3D

In this paper we prove the existence of a trajectory attractor (in the sense of V.V. Chepyzhov and M.I. Vishik) for a nonlinear PDE system coming from a 3D liquid crystal model accounting for stretching effects. The system couples a nonlinear evolution equation for the director d (introduced in order to describe the preferred orientation of the molecules) with an incompressible Navier-Stokes equation for the evolution of the velocity field u. The technique is based on the introduction of a suitable trajectory space and of a metric accounting for the double-well type nonlinearity contained in the director equation. Finally, a dissipative estimate is obtained by using a proper integrated energy inequality. Both the cases of (homogeneous) Neumann and (non-homogeneous) Dirichlet boundary conditions for d are considered.

On a 3D isothermal model for nematic liquid crystals accounting for stretching terms

The present contribution investigates the well-posedness of a PDE system describing the evolution of a nematic liquid crystal flow under kinematic transports for molecules of different shapes. More in particular, the evolution of the {\em velocity field} $\ub$ is ruled by the Navier-Stokes incompressible system with a stress tensor exhibiting a special coupling between the transport and the induced terms. The dynamic of the {\em director field} $\bd$ is described by a variation of a parabolic Ginzburg-Landau equation with a suitable penalization of the physical constraint $|\bd|=1$. Such equation accounts for both the kinematic transport by the flow field and the internal relaxation due to the elastic energy. The main aim of this contribution is to overcome the lack of a maximum principle for the director equation and prove (without any restriction on the data and on the physical constants of the problem) the existence of global in time weak solutions under physically meaningful boundary conditions on $\bd$ and $\ub$.

On the long-time behavior of some mathematical models for nematic liquid crystals

A model describing the evolution of a liquid crystal substance in the nematic phase is investigated in terms of two basic state variables: the {\it velocity field} $\bu$ and the {\it director field} $\di$, representing the preferred orientation of molecules in a neighborhood of any point in a reference domain. After recalling a known existence result, we investigate the long-time behavior of weak solutions. In particular, we show that any solution trajectory admits a non-empty $ω$-limit set containing only stationary solutions. Moreover, we give a number of sufficient conditions in order that the $ω$-limit set contains a single point. Our approach improves and generalizes existing results on the same problem.

Well-posedness of an extended model for water-ice phase transitions

We propose an improved model explaining the occurrence of high stresses due to the difference in specific volumes during phase transitions between water and ice. The unknowns of the resulting evolution problem are the absolute temperature, the volume increment, and the liquid fraction. The main novelty here consists in including the dependence of the specific heat and of the speed of sound upon the phase. These additional nonlinearities bring new mathematical difficulties which require new estimation techniques based on Moser iteration. We establish the existence of a global solution to the corresponding initial-boundary value problem, as well as lower and upper bounds for the absolute temperature. Assuming constant heat conductivity, we also prove uniqueness and continuous data dependence of the solution.

A nonlocal quasilinear multi-phase system with nonconstant specific heat and heat conductivity

In this paper, we prove the existence and global boundedness from above for a solution to an integrodifferential model for nonisothermal multi-phase transitions under nonhomogeneous third type boundary conditions. The system couples a quasilinear internal energy balance ruling the evolution of the absolute temperature with a vectorial integro-differential inclusion governing the (vectorial) phase-parameter dynamics. The specific heat and the heat conductivity are allowed to depend both on the order parameter and on the absolute temperature of the system, and the convex component of the free energy may or may not be singular. Uniqueness and continuous data dependence are also proved under additional assumptions.

A model for shape memory alloys with the possibility of voids

The paper is devoted to the study of a mathematical model for the thermomechanical evolution of metallic shape memory alloys. The main novelty of our approach consists in the fact that we include the possibility for these materials to exhibit voids during the phase change process. Indeed, in the engineering paper has been recently proved that voids may appear when the mixture is produced by the aggregations of powder. Hence, the composition of the mixture varies (under either thermal or mechanical actions) in this way: the martensites and the austenite transform into one another whereas the voids volume fraction evolves. The first goal of this contribution is hence to state a PDE system capturing all these modelling aspects in order then to establish the well-posedness of the associated initial-boundary value problem.

Phase separation in a gravity field

We prove here well-posedness and convergence to equilibria for the solution trajectories associated to a model for solidification of a liquid content of a rigid container in a gravity field. We observe that the gravity effects, which can be neglected without considerable changes of the process on finite time intervals, have a substantial influence on the long time behavior of the evolution system. Without gravity, we find a temperature interval, in which all phase distributions with a prescribed total liquid contents are admissible equilibria, while, under the influence of gravity, the only equilibrium distribution in a connected container consists in two pure phases separated by one plane interface perpendicular to the gravity force.

A bottle in a freezer

We propose here a model for solidification of a liquid contents of an elastic bottle in a freezer. The main goal is to explain the occurrence of high stresses inside the bottle. As a by-product, we derive a formula for the undercooling coefficient in terms of the elasticity constants, latent heat, and the phase expansion coefficient. We investigate the well-posedness of the three-dimensional model: we prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution for the corresponding initial-boundary value problem which couples a PDE with an integrodifferential equation and an ordinary differential inclusion ruling the evolution of the phase parameter. Finally, we prove some results on the long time behavior of solutions.

Solid liquid phase changes with different densities

In this paper we present a new thermodynamically consistent phase transition model describing the evolution of a liquid substance, e.g., water, in a rigid container $Ω$ when we freeze the container. Since the density $\varrho_{2}$ of ice with volume fraction $β_{2}$, is lower than the density $\varrho_{1}$ of water with volume fraction $β_{1}$, experiments - for instance the freezing of a glass bottle filled with water - show that the water pressure increases up to the rupture of the bottle. When the container is not impermeable, freezing may produce a non-homogeneous material, for instance water ice or sorbet. Here we describe a general class of phase transition processes including this example as particular case. Moreover, we study the resulting nonlinear and singular PDE system from the analytical viewpoint recovering existence of a global (in time) weak solution and also uniqueness for some particular choices of the nonlinear functions involved.
