On decoding hyperbolic codes

This work studies several decoding algorithms for hyperbolic codes. We use some previous ideas to describe how to decode a hyperbolic code using the largest Reed-Muller code contained in it or using the smallest Reed-Muller code that contains it. A combination of these two algorithms is proposed when hyperbolic codes are defined by polynomials in two variables. Then, we compare hyperbolic codes and Cube codes (tensor product of Reed-Solomon codes) and propose decoding algorithms of hyperbolic codes based on their closest Cube codes. Finally, we adapt to hyperbolic codes the Geil and Matsumoto's generalization of Sudan's list decoding algorithm.

On the affine permutation group of certain decreasing Cartesian codes

A decreasing Cartesian code is defined by evaluating a monomial set closed under divisibility on a Cartesian set. Some well-known examples are the Reed-Solomon, Reed-Muller, and (some) toric codes. The affine permutations consist of the permutations of the code that depend on an affine transformation. In this work, we study the affine permutations of some decreasing Cartesian codes, including the case when the Cartesian set has copies of multiplicative or additive subgroups.

On the generalized Hamming weights of hyperbolic codes

A hyperbolic code is an evaluation code that improves a Reed-Muller because the dimension increases while the minimum distance is not penalized. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions, based on the basic parameters of the Reed-Muller, to determine whether a Reed-Muller coincides with a hyperbolic code. Given a hyperbolic code, we find the largest Reed-Muller containing the hyperbolic code and the smallest Reed-Muller in the hyperbolic code. We then prove that similarly to Reed-Muller and Cartesian codes, the $r$-th generalized Hamming weight and the $r$-th footprint of the hyperbolic code coincide. Unlike Reed-Muller and Cartesian, determining the $r$-th footprint of a hyperbolic code is still an open problem. We give upper and lower bounds for the $r$-th footprint of a hyperbolic code that, sometimes, are sharp.

Powers of Principal $Q$-Borel ideals

Fix a poset $Q$ on $\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$. A $Q$-Borel monomial ideal $I \subseteq \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ is a monomial ideal whose monomials are closed under the Borel-like moves induced by $Q$. A monomial ideal $I$ is a principal $Q$-Borel ideal, denoted $I=Q(m)$, if there is a monomial $m$ such that all the minimal generators of $I$ can be obtained via $Q$-Borel moves from $m$. In this paper we study powers of principal $Q$-Borel ideals. Among our results, we show that all powers of $Q(m)$ agree with their symbolic powers, and that the ideal $Q(m)$ satisfies the persistence property for associated primes. We also compute the analytic spread of $Q(m)$ in terms of the poset $Q$.

On the Waldschmidt constant of square-free principal Borel ideals

Fix a square-free monomial $m \in S = \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. The square-free principal Borel ideal generated by $m$, denoted ${\rm sfBorel}(m)$, is the ideal generated by all the square-free monomials that can be obtained via Borel moves from the monomial $m$. We give upper and lower bounds for the Waldschmidt constant of ${\rm sfBorel}(m)$ in terms of the support of $m$, and in some cases, exact values. For any rational $\frac{a}{b} \geq 1$, we show that there exists a square-free principal Borel ideal with Waldschmidt constant equal to $\frac{a}{b}$.

Relative Generalized Minimum Distance Functions

In this paper we introduce the relative generalized minimum distance function (RGMDF for short) and it allows us to give an algebraic approach to the relative generalized Hamming weights of the projective Reed--Muller--type codes. Also we introduce the relative generalized footprint function and it gives a tight lower bound for the RGMDF which is much easier to compute.

Polar decreasing monomial-Cartesian codes

We prove that families of polar codes with multiple kernels over certain symmetric channels can be viewed as polar decreasing monomial-Cartesian codes, offering a unified treatment for such codes, over any finite field. We define decreasing monomial-Cartesian codes as the evaluation of a set of monomials closed under divisibility over a Cartesian product. Polar decreasing monomial-Cartesian codes are decreasing monomial-Cartesian codes whose sets of monomials are closed respect a partial order inspired by the recent work of Bardet, Dragoi, Otmani, and Tillich ["Algebraic properties of polar codes from a new polynomial formalism," 2016 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT)]. Extending the main theorem of Mori and Tanaka ["Source and Channel Polarization Over Finite Fields and Reed-Solomon Matrices," in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol. 60, no. 5, pp. 2720--2736, May 2014], we prove that any sequence of invertible matrices over an arbitrary field satisfying certain conditions polarizes any symmetric over the field channel. In addition, we prove that the dual of a decreasing monomial-Cartesian code is monomially equivalent to a decreasing monomial-Cartesian code. Defining the minimal generating set for a set of monomials, we use it to describe the length, dimension and minimum distance of a decreasing monomial-Cartesian code.

Vardøhus Codes: Polar Codes Based on Castle Curves Kernels

In this paper, we show some applications of algebraic curves to the construction of kernels of polar codes over a discrete memoryless channel which is symmetric w.r.t the field operations. We will also study the minimum distance of the polar codes proposed, their duals and the exponents of the matrices used for defining them. All the restrictions that we make to our curves will be accomplished by the so-called Castle Curves.

The second generalized Hamming weight of some evaluation codes arising from a projective torus

In this paper we find the second generalized Hamming weight of some evaluation codes arising from a projective torus, and it allows to compute the second generalized Hamming weight of the codes parameterized by the edges of any complete bipartite graph. Also, at the beginning, we obtain some results about the generalized Hamming weights of some evaluation codes arising from a complete intersection when the minimum distance is known and they are non--degenerate codes. Finally we give an example where we use these results to determine the complete weight hierarchy of some codes.

Vanishing Ideals Of Affine Sets Parameterized By Odd Cycles

Let K be a finite field. Let X* be a subset of the affine space Kn, which is parameterized by odd cycles. In this paper we give an explicit Gröbner basis for the vanishing ideal, I(X*), of X*. We give an explicit formula for the regularity of I(X*) and finally if X* is parameterized by an odd cycle of length k, we show that the Hilbert function of the vanishing ideal of X* can be written as linear combination of Hilbert functions of degenerate torus.

On the Connectedness and Diameter of a Geometric Johnson Graph

Let $P$ be a set of $n$ points in general position in the plane. A subset $I$ of $P$ is called an \emph{island} if there exists a convex set $C$ such that $I = P \cap C$. In this paper we define the \emph{generalized island Johnson graph} of $P$ as the graph whose vertex consists of all islands of $P$ of cardinality $k$, two of which are adjacent if their intersection consists of exactly $l$ elements. We show that for large enough values of $n$, this graph is connected, and give upper and lower bounds on its diameter.

Parameterized affine codes

Let K be a finite field and let X* be an affine algebraic toric set parameterized by monomials. We give an algebraic method, using Groebner bases, to compute the length and the dimension of C_X*(d), the parameterized affine code of degree d on the set X*. If Y is the projective closure of X*, it is shown that C_X^*(d) has the same basic parameters that C_Y(d), the parameterized projective code on the set Y. If X* is an affine torus, we compute the basic parameters of C_X*(d). We show how to compute the vanishing ideals of X* and Y.

On the vanishing ideal of an algebraic toric set and its parameterized linear codes

Let K be a finite field and let X be a subset of a projective space, over the field K, which is parameterized by monomials arising from the edges of a clutter. We show some estimates for the degree-complexity, with respect to the revlex order, of the vanishing ideal I(X) of X. If the clutter is uniform, we classify the complete intersection property of I(X) using linear algebra. We show an upper bound for the minimum distance of certain parameterized linear codes along with certain estimates for the algebraic invariants of I(X).

The minimum distance of parameterized codes on projective tori

Let X be a subset of a projective space, over a finite field K, which is parameterized by the monomials arising from the edges of a clutter. Let I(X) be the vanishing ideal of X. It is shown that I(X) is a complete intersection if and only if X is a projective torus. In this case we determine the minimum distance of any parameterized linear code arising from X.
