Haar-$\mathcal I$ sets: looking at small sets in Polish groups through compact glasses

Generalizing Christensen's notion of a Haar-null set and Darji's notion of a Haar-meager set, we introduce and study the notion of a Haar-$\mathcal I$ set in a Polish group. Here $\mathcal I$ is an ideal of subsets of some compact metrizable space $K$. A Borel subset $B\subset X$ of a Polish group $X$ is called Haar-$\mathcal I$ if there exists a continuous map $f:K\to X$ such that $f^{-1}(B+x)\in\mathcal I$ for all $x\in X$. Moreover, $B$ is generically Haar-$\mathcal I$ if the set of witness functions $\{f\in C(K,X):\forall x\in X\;\;f^{-1}(B+x)\in\mathcal I\}$ is comeager in the function space $C(K,X)$. We study (generically) Haar-$\mathcal I$ sets in Polish groups for many concrete and abstract ideals $\mathcal I$, and construct the corresponding distinguishing examples. We prove some results on Borel hull of Haar-$\mathcal I$ sets, generalizing results of Solecki, Elekes, Vidnyánszky, Doležal, Vlasǎk on Borel hulls of Haar-null and Haar-meager sets. Also we establish various Steinhaus properties of the families of (generically) Haar-$\mathcal I$ sets in Polish groups for various ideals $\mathcal I$.

The continuity of additive and convex functions, which are upper bounded on non-flat continua in $\mathbb R^n$

We prove that for a continuum $K\subset \mathbb R^n$ the sum $K^{+n}$ of $n$ copies of $K$ has non-empty interior in $\mathbb R^n$ if and only if $K$ is not flat in the sense that the affine hull of $K$ coincides with $\mathbb R^n$. Moreover, if $K$ is locally connected and each non-empty open subset of $K$ in not flat, then for any (analytic) non-meager subset $A\subset K$ the sum $A^{+n}$ of $n$ copies of $A$ is not meager in $\mathbb R^n$ (and then the sum $A^{+2n}$ of $2n$ copies of the analytic set $A$ has non-empty interior in $\mathbb R^n$ and the set $(A-A)^{+n}$ is a neighborhood of zero in $\mathbb R^n$). This implies that a mid-convex function $f:D\to\mathbb R$, defined on an open convex subset $D\subset\mathbb R^n$ is continuous if it is upper bounded on some non-flat continuum in $D$ or on a non-meager analytic subset of a locally connected nowhere flat subset of $D$.

Null-finite sets in metric groups and their applications

In the paper we introduce a new family of "small" sets which is tightly connected with two well known $σ$-ideals: of Haar-null sets and of Haar-meager sets. We define a subset $A$ of a topological group $X$ to be $\mathit{null}$-$\mathit{finite}$ if there exists an infinite compact subset $K\subset X$ such that for every $x\in X$ the intersection $K\cap (x+A)$ is finite. We prove that each null-finite Borel set in a complete metric Abelian group is Haar-null and Haar-meager. The Borel restriction in the above result is essential as each non-discrete metric Abelian group is the union of two null-finite sets. Applying null-finite sets to the theory of functional equations and inequalities, we prove that a mid-point convex function $f:G\to\mathbb R$ defined on an open convex subset $G$ of a metric linear space $X$ is continuous if it is upper bounded on a subset $B$ which is not null-finite and whose closure is contained in $G$. This gives an alternative short proof of a known generalization of Bernstein-Doetsch theorem (saying that a mid-point convex function $f:G\to\mathbb R$ defined on an open covex subset $G$ of a metric linear space $X$ is continuous if it is upper bounded on a non-empty open subset $B$ of $G$). Since Borel null-finite sets are Haar-meager and Haar-null, we conclude that a mid-point convex function $f:G\to\mathbb{R}$ defined on an open convex subset $G$ of a complete linear metric space $X$ is continuous if it is upper bounded on a Borel subset $B\subset G$ which is not Haar-null or not Haar-meager in $X$. The last result resolves an old problem in the theory of functional equations and inequalities posed by Baron and Ger in 1983.

Some analogies between Haar meager sets and Haar null sets in abelian Polish groups

In the paper we would like to pay attention to some analogies between Haar meager sets and Haar null sets. Among others, we will show that $0\in \inn (A-A)$ for each Borel set $A$, which is not Haar meager in an abelian Polish group. Moreover, we will give an example of a Borel non-Haar meager set $A\subset c_0$ such that $\inn (A+A)=\emptyset$. Finally, we will define $D$-measurability as a topological analog of Christensen measurability, and apply our generalization of Piccard's theorem to prove that each $D$-measurable homomorphism is continuous. Our results refer to the papers \cite{Ch}, \cite{Darji} and \cite{FS}.
