Infinite Symmetry Algebras in Four-Dimensional Conformal Field Theories

In generic interacting four-dimensional Lorentzian conformal field theories, an infinite set of universal light-ray operators constructed from the stress tensor is shown to generate the wedge subalgebra of the loop algebra of ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$. This algebra was recently identified among the asymptotic symmetries of asymptotically flat spacetimes. The one-point functions of the ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$ generators in scalar states (also known as one-point event shapes) are explicitly demonstrated to be finite and are precisely related to universal soft factors in the infinite tower of soft graviton theorems. A second universal class of light-ray operators that generates the ''$S$ algebra,'' the gauge-theoretic analog of ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$, is also constructed and shown to have finite one-point functions in four-dimensional conformal field theories with a spin-one conserved current. Along with the details of these results, this paper presents a general classification of stress-tensor and conserved current light-ray operators by scaling dimension and Lorentz ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ weights, a general technique for computing commutators by Poincar\'e recursion, results for other light-ray operator algebras including a local version of the four-dimensional conformal symmetry algebra, and examples for free scalar fields.

Light-ray Operators and the ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$ Algebra

A universal class of light-ray operators formed from null integrals of the stress tensor is constructed in generic interacting Lorentzian conformal field theories in four spacetime dimensions. This class of light-ray operators generates the wedge algebra of ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$, which was recently identified among the asymptotic symmetries of asymptotically flat spacetimes. In four-dimensional conformal field theories with an additional spin-one conserved current, a second universal class of light-ray operators is constructed and shown to generate the ''$S$ algebra,'' the gauge-theoretic analog of ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$. Finally, a precise relation is established between the one-point functions of these light-ray operators in scalar states and the universal soft factors in the infinite tower of soft graviton theorems. The results presented in this paper will be accompanied by detailed calculations and proofs in a longer forthcoming work.

Generating Hodges' Graviton MHV Formula with an $Lw_{1+\infty}$ Ward Identity

Hodges' formula expresses the tree-level all-multiplicity Einstein gravity MHV amplitude as a matrix determinant. In this work, we prove that Hodges' determinant is generated by an $Lw_{1+\infty}$ Ward identity on the celestial sphere. The Ward identity takes the form of a recursion relation that has not previously appeared in the literature and is unrelated to BCFW. The proof makes use of the matrix-tree theorem.

Shadow Celestial Operator Product Expansions

The linearized massless wave equation in four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes is known to admit two families of solutions that transform in highest-weight representations of the Lorentz group ${\rm SL}(2, \mathbb{C})$. The two families are related to each other by a two-dimensional shadow transformation. The scattering states of one family are constructed from standard momentum eigenstates by a Mellin transformation with respect to energy. Their operator product expansion (OPE) is directly related to collinear limits of momentum space amplitudes. The scattering states of the other family are a priori non-local on the celestial sphere and lack a standard notion of OPE. Such states appear naturally in the context of asymptotic symmetries, but their properties as operators remain largely unexplored. Here we initiate a study, to be continued in a forthcoming companion paper, of a definition of an OPE for shadow operators. We present a useful technical ingredient: the transformation of the OPE coefficients associated to collinear limits under a shadow. Our results can be used to find the coefficients of all three-point functions involving any combination of celestial and shadow primaries. An OPE block is used to account for the contribution from a primary together with its global conformal descendants, all of which contribute when deriving the shadowed OPE coefficients. Applications involving $U(1)$ currents and stress tensors as well as a chiral current algebra of soft gluons are discussed.

Sphere free energy of scalar field theories with cubic interactions

The dimensional continuation approach to calculating the free energy of $d$-dimensional Euclidean CFT on the round sphere $S^d$ has been used to develop its $4-\epsilon$ expansion for a number of well-known non-supersymmetric theories, such as the $O(N)$ model. The resulting estimate of the sphere free energy $F$ in the 3D Ising model has turned out to be in good agreement with the numerical value obtained using the fuzzy sphere regularization. In this paper, we develop the $6-\epsilon$ expansions for CFTs on $S^d$ described by scalar field theory with cubic interactions and use their resummations to estimate the values of $F$. In particular, we study the theories with purely imaginary coupling constants, which describe non-unitary universality classes arising when certain conformal minimal models are continued above two dimensions. The Yang-Lee model $M(2,5)$ is described by a field theory with one scalar field, while the $D$-series $M(3,8)$ model is described by two scalar fields. We also study the $OSp(1|2)$ symmetric cubic theory of one commuting and two anti-commuting scalar fields, which appears to describe the critical behavior of random spanning forests. In the course of our work, we revisit the calculations of beta functions of marginal operators containing the curvature. We also use another method for approximating $F$, which relies on perturbation theory around the bilocal action near the long-range/short-range crossover. The numerical values it gives for $F$ tend to be in good agreement with other available methods.

${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$ in 4D Gravitational Scattering

In four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes, an infinite tower of soft graviton modes is known to generate the symmetry algebra of ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$ at tree-level. Here we demonstrate that the symmetry action follows from soft graviton theorems and acts non-trivially on massive scalar particles. By generalizing previous analyses that were specifically tailored to the scattering of massless particles, our results clarify that ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$ symmetry is a universal feature of tree-level gravitational scattering in four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes and originates from minimally-coupled gravitational interactions. In addition, we show that the ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$ symmetry acts non-diagonally on massive states by mixing an infinite number of conformal families. We also present a concrete example of non-local behavior on the celestial sphere in the presence of massive scattering states.

Self-Dual Black Holes in Celestial Holography

We construct two-dimensional quantum states associated to four-dimensional linearized rotating self-dual black holes in $(2,2)$ signature Klein space. The states are comprised of global conformal primaries circulating on the celestial torus, the Kleinian analog of the celestial sphere. By introducing a generalized tower of Goldstone operators we identify the states as coherent exponentiations carrying an infinite tower of ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$ charges or soft hair. We relate our results to recent approaches to black hole scattering, including a connection to Wilson lines, $\mathcal{S}$-matrix results, and celestial holography in curved backgrounds.

Event Horizon Telescope observations of the jet launching and collimation in Centaurus A

Very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of active galactic nuclei at millimeter wavelengths have the power to reveal the launching and initial collimation region of extragalactic radio jets, down to $10-100$ gravitational radii ($r_g=GM/c^2$) scales in nearby sources. Centaurus A is the closest radio-loud source to Earth. It bridges the gap in mass and accretion rate between the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in Messier 87 and our galactic center. A large southern declination of $-43^{\circ}$ has however prevented VLBI imaging of Centaurus A below $λ1$cm thus far. Here, we show the millimeter VLBI image of the source, which we obtained with the Event Horizon Telescope at $228$GHz. Compared to previous observations, we image Centaurus A's jet at a tenfold higher frequency and sixteen times sharper resolution and thereby probe sub-lightday structures. We reveal a highly-collimated, asymmetrically edge-brightened jet as well as the fainter counterjet. We find that Centaurus A's source structure resembles the jet in Messier 87 on ${\sim}500r_g$ scales remarkably well. Furthermore, we identify the location of Centaurus A's SMBH with respect to its resolved jet core at $λ1.3$mm and conclude that the source's event horizon shadow should be visible at THz frequencies. This location further supports the universal scale invariance of black holes over a wide range of masses.

Celestial Operator Product Expansions and ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$ Symmetry for All Spins

The operator product expansion of massless celestial primary operators of arbitrary spin is investigated. Poincaré symmetry is found to imply a set of recursion relations on the operator product expansion coefficients of the leading singular terms at tree-level in a holomorphic limit. The symmetry constraints are solved by an Euler beta function with arguments that depend simply on the right-moving conformal weights of the operators in the product. These symmetry-derived coefficients are shown not only to match precisely those arising from momentum-space tree-level collinear limits, but also to obey an infinite number of additional symmetry transformations that respect the algebra of ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$. In tree-level minimally-coupled gravitational theories, celestial currents are constructed from light transforms of conformally soft gravitons and found to generate the action of ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$ on arbitrary massless celestial primaries. Results include operator product expansion coefficients for fermions as well as those arising from higher-derivative non-minimal couplings of gluons and gravitons.

Polarized Image of Equatorial Emission in the Kerr Geometry

We develop a simple toy model for polarized images of synchrotron emission from an equatorial source around a Kerr black hole by using a semi-analytic solution of the null geodesic equation and conservation of the Penrose-Walker constant. Our model is an extension of Narayan et al. (2021), which presented results for a Schwarzschild black hole, including a fully analytic approximation. Our model includes an arbitrary observer inclination, black hole spin, local boost, and local magnetic field configuration. We study the geometric effects of black hole spin on photon parallel transport and isolate these effects from the complicated combination of relativistic, gravitational, and electromagnetic processes in the emission region. We find an analytic approximation, consistent with previous work, for the subleading geometric effect of spin on observed face-on polarization rotation in the direct image: $Δ{\rm EVPA} \sim -2a/r_{\rm s}^2$, where $a$ is the black hole spin and $r_{\rm s}$ is the emission radius. We further show that spin introduces an order unity effect on face-on subimages: $Δ{\rm EVPA} \sim \pm a/\sqrt{27}$. We also use our toy model to analyze polarization "loops" observed during flares of orbiting hotspots. Our model provides insight into polarimetric simulations and observations of black holes such as those made by the EHT and GRAVITY.

Holographic Symmetry Algebras for Gauge Theory and Gravity

All 4D gauge and gravitational theories in asymptotically flat spacetimes contain an infinite number of non-trivial symmetries. They can be succinctly characterized by generalized 2D currents acting on the celestial sphere. A complete classification of these symmetries and their algebras is an open problem. Here we construct two towers of such 2D currents from positive-helicity photons, gluons, or gravitons with integer conformal weights. These generate the symmetries associated to an infinite tower of conformally soft theorems. The current algebra commutators are explicitly derived from the poles in the OPE coefficients, and found to comprise a rich closed subalgebra of the complete symmetry algebra.

The Polarized Image of a Synchrotron Emitting Ring of Gas Orbiting a Black Hole

Synchrotron radiation from hot gas near a black hole results in a polarized image. The image polarization is determined by effects including the orientation of the magnetic field in the emitting region, relativistic motion of the gas, strong gravitational lensing by the black hole, and parallel transport in the curved spacetime. We explore these effects using a simple model of an axisymmetric, equatorial accretion disk around a Schwarzschild black hole. By using an approximate expression for the null geodesics derived by Beloborodov (2002) and conservation of the Walker-Penrose constant, we provide analytic estimates for the image polarization. We test this model using currently favored general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of M87*, using ring parameters given by the simulations. For a subset of these with modest Faraday effects, we show that the ring model broadly reproduces the polarimetric image morphology. Our model also predicts the polarization evolution for compact flaring regions, such as those observed from Sgr A* with GRAVITY. With suitably chosen parameters, our simple model can reproduce the EVPA pattern and relative polarized intensity in Event Horizon Telescope images of M87*. Under the physically motivated assumption that the magnetic field trails the fluid velocity, this comparison is consistent with the clockwise rotation inferred from total intensity images.

The Soft $\mathcal{S}$-Matrix in Gravity

The gravitational $\mathcal{S}$-matrix defined with an infrared (IR) cutoff factorizes into hard and soft factors. The soft factor is universal and contains all the IR and collinear divergences. Here we show, in a momentum space basis, that the intricate expression for the soft factor is fully reproduced by two boundary currents, which live on the celestial sphere. The first of these is the supertranslation current, which generates spacetime supertranslations. The second is its symplectic partner, the Goldstone current for spontaneously broken supertranslations. The current algebra has an off-diagonal level structure involving the gravitational cusp anomalous dimension and the logarithm of the IR cutoff. It is further shown that the gravitational memory effect is contained as an IR safe observable within the soft $\mathcal{S}$-matrix.

Universal Polarimetric Signatures of the Black Hole Photon Ring

Black hole images present an annular region of enhanced brightness. In the absence of propagation effects, this "photon ring" has universal features that are completely governed by general relativity and independent of the details of the emission. Here, we show that the polarimetric image of a black hole also displays universal properties. In particular, the photon ring exhibits a self-similar pattern of polarization that encodes the black hole spin. We explore the corresponding universal polarimetric signatures of the photon ring on long interferometric baselines, and propose a method for measuring the black hole spin using a sparse interferometric array. These signatures could enable spin measurements of the supermassive black hole in M87, as well as precision tests of general relativity in the strong field regime, via a future extension of the Event Horizon Telescope to space.

Celestial Current Algebra from Low's Subleading Soft Theorem

The leading soft photon theorem implies that four-dimensional scattering amplitudes are controlled by a two-dimensional (2D) $U(1)$ Kac-Moody symmetry that acts on the celestial sphere at null infinity ($\mathcal{I}$). This celestial $U(1)$ current is realized by components of the electromagnetic vector potential on the boundaries of $\mathcal{I}$. Here, we develop a parallel story for Low's subleading soft photon theorem. It gives rise to a second celestial current, which is realized by vector potential components that are subleading in the large radius expansion about the boundaries of $\mathcal{I}$. The subleading soft photon theorem is reexpressed as a celestial Ward identity for this second current, which involves novel shifts by one unit in the conformal dimension of charged operators.

Uplifting AdS3/CFT2 to Flat Space Holography

Four-dimensional (4D) flat Minkowski space admits a foliation by hyperbolic slices. Euclidean AdS3 slices fill the past and future lightcones of the origin, while dS3 slices fill the region outside the lightcone. The resulting link between 4D asymptotically flat quantum gravity and AdS3/CFT2 is explored in this paper. The 4D superrotations in the extended BMS4 group are found to act as the familiar conformal transformations on the 3D hyperbolic slices, mapping each slice to itself. The associated 4D superrotation charge is constructed in the covariant phase space formalism. The soft part gives the 2D stress tensor, which acts on the celestial sphere at the boundary of the hyperbolic slices, and is shown to be an uplift to 4D of the familiar 3D holographic AdS3 stress tensor. Finally, we find that 4D quantum gravity contains an unexpected second, conformally soft, dimension (2, 0) mode that is symplectically paired with the celestial stress tensor.

A Note on the Subleading Soft Graviton

We show that the soft part of the charge generating infinitesimal superrotations can be expressed, in harmonic gauge, in terms of metric components evaluated at the boundaries of null infinity that are subleading in a large radius expansion. We then recast the spin memory observable in terms of these boundary values.
