Axial Magnetic Quadrupole Mode of Dielectric Resonator for Omnidirectional Wireless Power Transfer

To achieve omnidirectional wireless power transfer with high efficiency, a high Q-factor transmitter generating homogeneous magnetic field is crucial. Traditionally, orthogonal coils of different shapes are used to realize transmitters. In this paper, we develop an omnidirectional magnetic resonant wireless power transfer system based on a dielectric disk resonator with colossal permittivity and low loss operating at axial magnetic quadrupole mode. The constant power transfer efficiency of 88% at the frequency of 157 MHz over the transfer distance of 3 cm for all angular positions of a receiver is experimentally demonstrated. The possibility of multi-receivers charging is also studied demonstrating a total efficiency of 90% regardless of angular position between two receivers with respect to the transmitting disk resonator. The minimized exposure of biological tissues to the electric and magnetic fields as well as a low specific absorption rate is observed that makes the WPT system safer for charging with higher input power.

Quantum-assisted Distortion-free audio signal sensing

Quantum sensors are keeping the cutting-edge sensitivities in metrology. However, for high-sensitive measurements of arbitrary signals, limitations in linear dynamic range could introduce distortions when sensing the frequency, magnitude and phase of unknown signals. Here, we overcome these limitations with advanced sensing protocol that combines quantum phase-sensitive detection with heterodyne readout. We present theoretical and experimental investigations using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, showing the ability to sense radio signals with a 98 dB linear dynamic range, a 31 pT/Hz$^{1/2}$ sensitivity, and arbitrary frequency resolution. Further, we perform the quantum-assisted distortion-free audio signal (melody, speech) sensing with high fidelity. The methods developed here could broaden the horizon for quantum sensors towards applications in telecommunication, where high-fidelity and low-distortion at multiple frequency bands within small sensing volumes are required.

Diamond magnetometry and gradiometry towards subpicotesla DC field measurement

Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have developed into a powerful solid-state platform for compact quantum sensors. However, high sensitivity measurements usually come with additional constraints on the pumping intensity of the laser and the pulse control applied. Here, we demonstrate high sensitivity NV ensemble based magnetic field measurements with low-intensity optical excitation. DC magnetometry methods like, e.g., continuous-wave optically detected magnetic resonance and continuously excited Ramsey measurements combined with lock-in detection, are compared to get an optimization. Gradiometry is also investigated as a step towards unshielded measurements of unknown gradients. The magnetometer demonstrates a minimum detectable field of 0.3-0.7 pT in a 73 s measurement by further applying a flux guide with a sensing dimension of 2 mm, corresponding to a magnetic field sensitivity of 2.6-6 pT/Hz^0.5. Combined with our previous efforts on the diamond AC magnetometry, the diamond magnetometer is promising to perform wide bandwidth magnetometry with picotesla sensitivity and a cubic-millimeter sensing volume under ambient conditions.

Smart Table Based on Metasurface for Wireless Power Transfer

Metasurfaces have been investigated and its numerous exotic functionalities and the potentials to arbitrarily control of the electromagnetic fields have been extensively explored. However, only limited types of metasurface have finally entered into real products. Here, we introduce a concept of a metasurface-based smart table for wirelessly charging portable devices and report its first prototype. The proposed metasurface can efficiently transform evanescent fields into propagating waves which significantly improves the near field coupling to charge a receiving device arbitrarily placed on its surface wirelessly through magnetic resonance coupling. In this way, power transfer efficiency of 80$\%$ is experimentally obtained when the receiver is placed at any distances from the transmitter. The proposed concept enables a variety of important applications in the fields of consumer electronics, electric automobiles, implanted medical devices, etc. The further developed metasurface-based smart table may serve as an ultimate 2-dimensional platform and support charging multiple receivers.

Giant magneto-electric field separation via near-field interference on anapole-like states

Quality of spatial separation between electric and magnetic fields in an electromagnetic wave is fundamentally constrained by nonlocal nature of Maxwell equations. While electric and magnetic energy densities in a wave, propagating in vacuum, are equal at each point in space, carefully designed photonic structures can enable surpassing this limit. Here, a set of high index dielectric tubes was for the first time proposed and theoretically and experimentally demonstrated to deliver a record high spatial separation, overcoming the free space scenario by more than three orders of magnitude with simultaneous enhancement of the magnetic field. Separation effect in the proposed structure is enabled by the near-field interference on anapole-like states, designed by tuning geometrical parameters of coupled dielectric tubes. The void layout of the structure enables the direct observation of the effect with near-field probes and could be further employed for relevant applications. Novel devices, providing tunable high quality separation between electric and magnetic fields, are extremely important for metrology, spectroscopy, spintronics, and opto-electronic applications.
