Products of partial normal subgroups

We show that the product of two partial normal subgroups of a locality (in the sense of Chermak) is again a partial normal subgroup. This generalizes a theorem of Chermak and fits into the context of building a local theory of localities.

Centralizers of normal subgroups and the $Z^*$-Theorem

Glauberman's $Z^*$-theorem and analogous statements for odd primes show that, for any prime $p$ and any finite group $G$ with Sylow $p$-subgroup $S$, the centre of $G/O_{p^\prime}(G)$ is determined by the fusion system $\mathcal{F}_S(G)$. Building on these results we show a statement that seems a priori more general: For any normal subgroup $H$ of $G$ with $O_{p^\prime}(H)=1$, the centralizer $C_S(H)$ is expressed in terms of the fusion system $\mathcal{F}_S(H)$ and its normal subsystem induced by $H$.

A characterization of saturated fusion systems over abelian 2-groups

Given a saturated fusion system $\mathcal{F}$ over a $2$-group $S$, we prove that $S$ is abelian provided any element of $S$ is $\mathcal{F}$-conjugate to an element of $Z(S)$. This generalizes a Theorem of Camina--Herzog, leading to a significant simplification of its proof. More importantly, it follows that any $2$-block $B$ of a finite group has abelian defect groups if all $B$-subsections are major. Furthermore, every $2$-block with a symmetric stable center has abelian defect groups.

Group cohomology and control of p-fusion

We show that if an inclusion of finite groups H < G of index prime to p induces a homeomorphism of mod p cohomology varieties, or equivalently an F-isomorphism in mod p cohomology, then H controls p-fusion in G, if p is odd. This generalizes classical results of Quillen who proved this when H is a Sylow p-subgroup, and furthermore implies a hitherto difficult result of Mislin about cohomology isomorphisms. For p=2 we give analogous results, at the cost of replacing mod p cohomology with higher chromatic cohomology theories. The results are consequences of a general algebraic theorem we prove, that says that isomorphisms between p-fusion systems over the same finite p-group are detected on elementary abelian p-groups if p odd and abelian 2-groups of exponent at most 4 if p=2.

Products in Fusion Systems

We revisit the notion of a product of a normal subsystem with a $p$-subgroup as defined by Aschbacher. In particular, we give a previously unknown, more transparent construction.

Minimal Fusion Systems with a Unique Maximal Parabolic

We define minimal fusion systems in a way that every non-solvable fusion system has a section which is minimal. Minimal fusion systems can also be seen as analogs of Thompson's N-groups. In this paper, we consider a minimal fusion system $\mathcal{F}$ on a finite $p$-group $S$ that has a unique maximal $p$-local subsystem containing $N_{\mathcal{F}}(S)$. For an arbitrary prime $p$, we determine the structure of a certain (explicitly described) $p$-local subsystem of $\mathcal{F}$. If $p=2$, this leads to a complete classification of the fusion system $\mathcal{F}$.
