On Kaon production in e+e- and Semi-inclusive DIS reactions

We consider semi-inclusive unpolarized DIS for the production of charged kaons and the different possibilities to test the conventionally used assumptions s-\bar=0 and D_d^{K^+-K^-}=0. The considered tests have the advantage that they do not require any knowledge of the fragmentation functions. We also show that measurements of both charged and neutral kaons would allow the determination of the kaon FFs D_q^{K^++K^-} solely from SIDIS measurements, and discuss the comparison of (D_u-D_d)^{K^+-K^-} obtained independently in SIDIS and e+e- reactions. All analysis are performed in LO and NLO in QCD. The feasibility of the tests to HERMES SIDIS data is considered.

Impact of CLAS and COMPASS data on Polarized Parton Densities and Higher Twist

We have re-analyzed the world data on inclusive polarized DIS including the very precise CLAS proton and deuteron data, as well as the latest COMPASS data on the asymmetry $A_1^d$, and have studied the impact of these data on polarized parton densities and higher twist effects. We demonstrate that the low $Q^2$ CLAS data improve essentially our knowledge of higher twist corrections to the spin structure function $g_1$, while the large $Q^2$ COMPASS data influence mainly the strange quark density. In our new analysis we find that a negative polarized gluon density, or one that changes sign as a function of x, cannot be ruled out from the present DIS data.

Longitudinal Polarized Parton Densities Updated

We have re-analyzed the world data on inclusive polarized DIS, in both NLO and LO QCD, including the new HERMES and COMPASS data. The updated NLO polarized densities are given in both the $\rm \bar{MS}$ and JET schemes. The impact of the new data on the results is discussed.

Non-singlets in Semi-inclusive DIS and inclusive e+e- annihilation

We show that non-singlets in semi-inclusive DIS with pi^\pm determine without assumptions Delta u_V, Delta d_V and D_u^{π+ - pi-}. Non-singlets in SIDIS and inclusive e+e- -annihilation with K^\pm determine (s-bar s) and (Delta s-Delta bar s), but an assumption is necessary -- we choose as most natural D_d^{K+ - K-}=0. Measurements with charged K^\pm and neutral K0+bar K0 in semi-inclusive DIS and e+e--annihilation determine D_{u,d,s}^{K+ + K-} without any assumptions and allow tests of LO approximation in QCD.

Higher Twist Effects in Polarized DIS

The size of higher twist corrections to the spin proton and neutron g1 structure functions and their role in determining the polarized parton densities in the nucleon is discussed.

The Effect of Positivity Constraints on Polarized Parton Densities

The impact of positivity constraints on the polarized parton densities has been studied. Special attention has been paid to the role of positivity constraints in determining the polarized strange quark and gluon densities, which are not well determined from the present data on inclusive polarized DIS.

Role of Positivity Constraints in Determining Polarized Parton Densities

We have re-analyzed the world data on inclusive polarized DIS, in both NLO and LO QCD, including the very precise JLab Hall A neutron data, and have studied the role of positivity constraints, and demonstrated their importance, in determining the strange and gluon densities. We have shown that higher twist corrections are essential in the analysis of the present data on the structure function g1. A consistent QCD analysis is achieved, and results for the polarized parton densities are given in both the MSbare and JET schemes.

A Model Independent Approach to Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We present a method for extraction of detailed information on polarized quark densities from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering l+N -> l+h+X, in both LO and NLO QCD without any assumptions about fragmentation functions and polarized sea densities. The only symmetries utilised are charge conjugation and isotopic spin invariance of strong interactions.

On the non-vanishing of the Collins mechanism for single spin asymmetries

The Collins mechanism provides a non-perturbative explanation for the large single spin asymmetries found in hard semi-inclusive reactions involving a transversely polarized nucleon. However, there are seemingly convincing reasons to suspect that the mechanism vanishes, and indeed it does vanish in the naive parton model where a quark is regarded as an essentially 'free' particle. We give an intuitive analysis which highlights the difference between the naive picture and the realistic one, and shows how the Collins mechanism arises when the quark is described as an off-shell particle by a field in interaction. A typographical error is corrected in this version.

Polarized Parton Densities in the Nucleon

We present a new NLO QCD analysis of the world data on inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering. Comparing to our previous analysis: i) the values of g_A and a_8=3F-D are updated ii) the MRST'99 instead of the MRST'98 parametrization for the input unpolarized parton densities is used and iii) the recent SLAC E155 proton data on the spin asymmetry A1 are included in the analysis. A new set of polarized parton densities is extracted from the data and the sensitivity of the results to different positivity constraints is discussed.

A Strategy for the Analysis of Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We present a strategy for the systematic extraction of a vast amount of detailed information on polarized parton densities and fragmentation functions from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering l+N -> l+h+X, in both LO and NLO QCD. A method is suggested for estimating the errors involved in the much simpler, and therefore much more attractive, LO analysis. The approach is based upon a novel interplay with data from inclusive DIS and from e+e- -> hX, and leads to a much simplified form of the NLO expressions. No assumptions are made about the equality of any parton densities and the only symmetries utilised are charge conjugation invariance and isotopic spin invariance of strong interactions.

On Combining High and Low Q**2 Information on the Polarized Parton Densities

We draw attention to some problems in the combined use of high-Q^2 deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data and low-Q^2 hyperon β-decay data in the determination of the polarized parton densities. We explain why factorization schemes like the JET or AB schemes are the simplest in which to study the implications of the DIS parton densities for the physics of the low-Q^2 region.

Semi-inclusive π^\pm production - tests for independent fragmentation and for polarized quark densities

We show that measurements of semi-inclusive $π^\pm$ asymmetries on $p$ and $n$ with polarized and unpolarized target and beams allow, without any knowledge of the polarized parton densities 1) to test independent fragmentation and SU(2) symmetry for the polarized sea, and 2) to determine separately the polarized strange and valence quark densities, and the ratio of the fragmentation functions $D_s^{π^+ + π^-}/D_u^{π^+ +π^-}$

A New Study of the Polarized Parton Densities in the Nucleon

We present a new next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the world data on inclusive polarized deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering adding to the old set of data the final SMC results, the HERMES proton and very recent SLAC/E155 deuteron data. We find an excellent fit to the data and present results for the polarized parton densities in different factorization schemes. These results are in a good agreement with what follows from the theory. We have also found that the main effect of the newly incorporated data is a better determination of the polarized gluon density.
