The $α$-states of a string worldsheet

The worldsheet description of string amplitudes can be reinterpreted as a baby universe field theory. Under this reinterpretation, we determine the $α$-states of a topological string theory: the Hurwitz worldsheet. We find that their relation to the Hartle--Hawking state encodes foundational results in the asymptotic representation theory of the symmetric group. In the holographic dual, our results characterize the pseudorandom nature of an ensemble of cluster-decomposing correlators.

A Semiclassical Diagnostic for Spacetime Emergence

Recent developments have shown that some semiclassical spacetimes cannot emerge from a traditional application of the rules of holography, prompting proposals for restoring their emergence with "observer rules". In this paper, we propose a general semiclassical diagnostic of such failures of emergence, and of the extent to which observer rules can fix them. Our diagnostic is the presence of certain "evanescent" quantum extremal surfaces, which are distinguished by an upper bound on their area rather than their generalized entropy. In particular, the generalized entropy of an evanescent QES may be large: even though its area term must be small, its bulk entanglement term is unconstrained. This feature is explained by an operational distinction between classical and quantum connectivity in semiclassical gravity, or equivalently between the two summands of the generalized entropy.

A no-go theorem for large $N$ closed universes

Under conservative assumptions, it is established at a mathematical level of rigor that if correlation functions of single trace operators in a sequence of states of $O(N^0)$ energy of a two-sided holographic conformal field theory admit a large $N$ limit, then they must be described a pure state in the large $N$ Hilbert space of free field theory on two copies of vacuum AdS. This result clarifies recent discussions concerning the possible emergence of a semiclassical baby universe in the large $N$ limit of a low-energy partially entangled thermal state. The proof heavily relies on dominated convergence arguments from mathematical analysis. Some comments are also offered on the relationship between various recently proposed ways of restoring the emergence of the baby universe and the relaxation of different assumptions of the theorem.

Observer complementarity for black holes and holography

We present a mathematical formulation of black hole complementarity based on recent rules for including the observer in quantum cosmology. We argue that this provides a self-consistent treatment of the interior of an evaporating black hole throughout its history, as well as the Antonini-Sasieta-Swingle-Rath configuration where a closed universe is entangled with a pair of AdS universes.

Further Evidence Against a Semiclassical Baby Universe in AdS/CFT

We argue that a large class of asymptotically AdS geometries with a semiclassical baby universe cannot be realized within the AdS/CFT correspondence. This in particular resolves a recent puzzle introduced by Antonini and Rath, in which a single CFT state appeared to simultaneously describe an AdS spacetime with a baby universe and one without. We construct a low-energy (and low complexity) boundary operator whose expectation values in the descriptions with and without the baby universe cannot match if the baby universe is semiclassical. This operator conclusively identifies the actual bulk dual: the spacetime without a semiclassical baby universe. This result assumes only that AdS/CFT admits an extrapolate dictionary and an asymptotically isometric encoding of the causal wedge into the dual CFT, without which the correspondence may well be vacuous.

On Infinite Tensor Networks, Complementary Recovery and Type II Factors

We initiate a study of local operator algebras at the boundary of infinite tensor networks, using the mathematical theory of inductive limits. In particular, we consider tensor networks in which each layer acts as a quantum code with complementary recovery, a property that features prominently in the bulk-to-boundary maps intrinsic to holographic quantum error-correcting codes. In this case, we decompose the limiting Hilbert space and the algebras of observables in a way that keeps track of the entanglement in the network. As a specific example, we describe this inductive limit for the holographic HaPPY code model and relate its algebraic and error-correction features. We find that the local algebras in this model are given by the hyperfinite type II$_\infty$ factor. Next, we discuss other networks that build upon this framework and comment on a connection between type II factors and stabilizer circuits. We conclude with a discussion of MERA networks in which complementary recovery is broken. We argue that this breaking possibly permits a limiting type III von Neumann algebra, making them more suitable ansätze for approximating subregions of quantum field theories.

Explicit large $N$ von Neumann algebras from matrix models

We construct a large family of quantum mechanical systems that give rise to an emergent type III$_1$ von Neumann algebra in the large $N$ limit. Their partition functions are matrix integrals that appear in the study of various gauge theories. We calculate the real-time, finite temperature correlation functions in these systems and show that they are described by an emergent type III$_1$ von Neumann algebra at large $N$. The spectral density underlying this algebra is computed in closed form in terms of the eigenvalue density of a discrete matrix model. Furthermore, we explain how to systematically promote these theories to systems with a Hagedorn transition, and show that a type III$_1$ algebra only emerges above the Hagedorn temperature. Finally, we empirically observe in examples a correspondence between the space of states of the quantum mechanics and Calabi--Yau manifolds.

Toward stringy horizons

We take a first step towards developing a new language to describe causal structure, event horizons, and quantum extremal surfaces (QES) for the bulk description of holographic systems beyond the standard Einstein gravity regime. By considering the structure of boundary operator algebras, we introduce a stringy ``causal depth parameter'', which quantifies the depth of the emergent radial direction in the bulk, and a certain notion of ergodicity on the boundary. We define stringy event horizons in terms of the half-sided inclusion property, which is related to a stronger notion of boundary ergodic or quantum chaotic behavior. Using our definition, we argue that above the Hawking--Page temperature, there is an emergent sharp horizon structure in the large $N$ limit of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang--Mills at finite nonzero 't Hooft coupling. In contrast, some previously considered toy models of black hole information loss do not have a stringy horizon. Our methods can also be used to probe violations of the equivalence principle for the bulk gravitational system, and to explore aspects of stringy nonlocality.

Wormhole Renormalization: The gravitational path integral, holography, and a gauge group for topology change

We study the Factorization Paradox from the bottom up by adapting methods from perturbative renormalization. Just as quantum field theories are plagued with loop divergences that need to be cancelled systematically by introducing counterterms, gravitational path integrals are plagued by wormhole contributions that spoil the factorization of the holographic dual. These wormholes must be cancelled by some stringy effects in a UV complete, holographic theory of quantum gravity. In a simple model of two-dimensional topological gravity, we outline a gravitational analog of the recursive BPHZ procedure in order to systematically introduce ``counter-wormholes" which parametrize the unknown stringy effects that lead to factorization. Underlying this procedure is a Hopf algebra of symmetries which is analogous to the Connes--Kreimer Hopf algebra underlying perturbative renormalization. The group dual to this Hopf algebra acts to reorganize contributions from spacetimes with distinct topology, and can be seen as a gauge group relating various equivalent ways of constructing a factorizing gravitational path integral.

Bounds on spectral gaps of Hyperbolic spin surfaces

We describe a method for constraining Laplacian and Dirac spectra of two dimensional compact orientable hyperbolic spin manifolds and orbifolds. The key ingredient is an infinite family of identities satisfied by the spectra. These spectral identities follow from the consistency between 1) the spectral decomposition of functions on the spin bundle into irreducible representations of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and 2) associativity of pointwise multiplication of functions. Applying semidefinite programming methods to our identities produces rigorous upper bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap as well as on the Dirac spectral gap conditioned on the former. In several examples, our bounds are nearly sharp; a numerical algorithm based on the Selberg trace formula shows that the $[0;3,3,5]$ orbifold, a particular surface with signature $[1;3]$, and the Bolza surface nearly saturate the bounds at genus $0$, $1$ and $2$ respectively. Under additional assumptions on the number of harmonic spinors carried by the spin-surface, we obtain more restrictive bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap. In particular, these bounds apply to hyperelliptic surfaces. We also determine the set of Laplacian spectral gaps attained by all compact orientable two-dimensional hyperbolic spin orbifolds. We show that this set is upper bounded by $12.13798$; this bound is nearly saturated by the $[0;3,3,5]$ orbifold, whose first non-zero Laplacian eigenvalue is $λ^{(0)}_1\approx 12.13623$.

Emergent spacetime and the ergodic hierarchy

Various diagnostics of the emergence of an arrow of time in the bulk description of a holographic theory have been proposed, including the decay of some real time correlation functions and the appearance of type III$_1$ von Neumann algebras carrying half-sided modular inclusions. This note puts forward a close parallel between these diagnostics and a quantum formulation of the ergodic hierarchy of dynamical systems. Theories with an emergent spacetime appear to sit near the top of this hierarchy.

Large $N$ von Neumann algebras and the renormalization of Newton's constant

I derive a family of Ryu--Takayanagi formulae that are valid in the large $N$ limit of holographic quantum error-correcting codes, and parameterized by a choice of UV cutoff in the bulk. The bulk entropy terms are matched with a family of von Neumann factors nested inside the large $N$ von Neumann algebra describing the bulk effective field theory. These factors are mapped onto one another by a family of conditional expectations, which are interpreted as a renormalization group flow for the code subspace. Under this flow, I show that the renormalizations of the area term and the bulk entropy term exactly compensate each other. This result provides a concrete realization of the ER=EPR paradigm, as well as an explicit proof of a conjecture due to Susskind and Uglum.

Holographic tensor networks from hyperbolic buildings

We introduce a unifying framework for the construction of holographic tensor networks, based on the theory of hyperbolic buildings. The underlying dualities relate a bulk space to a boundary which can be homeomorphic to a sphere, but also to more general spaces like a Menger sponge type fractal. In this general setting, we give a precise construction of a large family of bulk regions that satisfy complementary recovery. For these regions, our networks obey a Ryu--Takayanagi formula. The areas of Ryu--Takayanagi surfaces are controlled by the Hausdorff dimension of the boundary, and consistently generalize the behavior of holographic entanglement entropy in integer dimensions to the non-integer case. Our construction recovers HaPPY--like codes in all dimensions, and generalizes the geometry of Bruhat--Tits trees. It also provides examples of infinite-dimensional nets of holographic conditional expectations, and opens a path towards the study of conformal field theory and holography on fractal spaces.

Nonperturbative gravity corrections to bulk reconstruction

We introduce a new algebraic framework for understanding nonperturbative gravitational aspects of bulk reconstruction with a finite or infinite-dimensional boundary Hilbert space. We use relative entropy equivalence between bulk and boundary with an inclusion of nonperturbative gravitational errors, which give rise to approximate recovery. We utilize the privacy/correctability correspondence to prove that the reconstruction wedge, the intersection of all entanglement wedges in pure and mixed states, manifestly satisfies bulk reconstruction. We explicitly demonstrate that local operators in the reconstruction wedge of a given boundary region can be recovered in a state-independent way for arbitrarily large code subspaces, up to nonperturbative errors in $G_N$. We further discuss state-dependent recovery beyond the reconstruction wedge and the use of the twirled Petz map as a universal recovery channel. We discuss our setup in the context of quantum islands and the information paradox.

Renormalizing Yukawa interactions in the standard model with matrices and noncommutative geometry

We show that gauge-independent terms in the one-loop and multi-loops $β$-functions of the Standard Model can be exactly computed from the Wetterich functional renormalization of a matrix model. Our framework is associated to the finite spectral triple underlying the computation of the Standard Model Lagrangian from the spectral action of Noncommutative Geometry. This matrix-Yukawa duality for the $β$-function is a first hint towards understanding the renormalization of the Noncommutative Standard Model conceptually, and provides a novel computational approach for multi-loop $β$-functions of particle physics models.

Holographic baby universes: an observable story

We formulate the baby universe construction rigorously by giving a primordial role to the algebra of observables of quantum gravity rather than the Hilbert space. Utilizing diffeomorphism invariance, we study baby universe creation and annihilation via change in topology. We then construct the algebra of boundary observables for holographic theories and show that it enhances to contain an 'extra' Abelian tensor factor to describe the bulk in the quantum regime; via the gravitational path integral we realize this extra tensor factor, at the level of the Hilbert space, in the context of the GNS representation. We reformulate the necessary assumptions for the "baby universe hypothesis" using the GNS representation. When the baby universe hypothesis is satisfied, we demonstrate that the "miraculous cancellations" in the corresponding gravitational path integral have a natural explanation in terms of the character theory of Abelian $C^\ast$-algebras. We find the necessary and sufficient mathematical condition for the baby universe hypothesis to hold, and transcribe it into sufficient physical conditions. We find that they are incompatible with a baby universe formation that is influenced by any bulk process from the AdS/CFT correspondence. We illustrate our construction by applying it to two settings, which leads to a re-interpretion of some topological models of gravity, and to draw an analogy with the topological vacua of gauge theory.

Thermal states are vital: Entanglement Wedge Reconstruction from Operator-Pushing

We give a general construction of a setup that verifies bulk reconstruction, conservation of relative entropies, and equality of modular flows between the bulk and the boundary, for infinite-dimensional systems with operator-pushing. In our setup, a bulk-to-boundary map is defined at the level of the $C^*$-algebras of state-independent observables. We then show that if the boundary dynamics allow for the existence of a KMS state, physically relevant Hilbert spaces and von Neumann algebras can be constructed directly from our framework. Our construction should be seen as a state-dependent construction of the other side of a wormhole and clarifies the meaning of black hole reconstruction claims such as the Papadodimas-Raju proposal. As an illustration, we apply our result to construct a wormhole based on the HaPPY code, which satisfies all properties of entanglement wedge reconstruction.

The infinite-dimensional HaPPY code: entanglement wedge reconstruction and dynamics

We construct an infinite-dimensional analog of the HaPPY code as a growing series of stabilizer codes defined respective to their Hilbert spaces. The Hilbert spaces are related by isometric maps, which we define explicitly. We construct a Hamiltonian that is compatible with the infinite-dimensional HaPPY code and further study the stabilizer of our code, which has an inherent fractal structure. We use this result to study the dynamics of the code and map a nontrivial bulk Hamiltonian to the boundary. We find that the image of the mapping is scale invariant, but does not create any long-range entanglement in the boundary, therefore failing to reproduce the features of a CFT. This result shows the limits of the HaPPY code as a model of the AdS/CFT correspondence, but also hints that the relevance of quantum error correction in quantum gravity may not be limited to the CFT context.
