Affine random walks on the torus

We consider random walks on the torus arising from the action of the group of affine transformations. We give a quantitative equidistribution result for this random walk under the assumption that the Zariski closure of the group generated by the linear part acts strongly irreducibly on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and is either Zariski connected or contains a proximal element. Specifically, we give quantitative estimates (depending only on the linear part of the random walk) for how fast the random walk equidistributes unless the initial point and the translation part of the affine transformations can be perturbed so that the random walk is trapped in a finite orbit of small cardinality. In particular, we prove that the random walk equidistributes in law to the Haar measure if and only if the random walk is not trapped in a finite orbit.

On Radon measures invariant under horospherical flows on geometrically infinite quotients

We consider a locally finite (Radon) measure on $ SO^+(d,1)/ Γ$ invariant under a horospherical subgroup of $ SO^+(d,1) $ where $ Γ$ is a discrete, but not necessarily geometrically finite, subgroup. We show that whenever the measure does not observe any additional invariance properties then it must be supported on a set of points with geometrically degenerate trajectories under the corresponding contracting $ 1 $-parameter diagonalizable flow (geodesic flow).

Double variational principle for mean dimension

We develop a variational principle between mean dimension theory and rate distortion theory. We consider a minimax problem about the rate distortion dimension with respect to two variables (metrics and measures). We prove that the minimax value is equal to the mean dimension for a dynamical system with the marker property. The proof exhibits a new combination of ergodic theory, rate distortion theory and geometric measure theory. Along the way of the proof, we also show that if a dynamical system has the marker property then it has a metric for which the upper metric mean dimension is equal to the mean dimension.

Symmetry of entropy in higher rank diagonalizable actions and measure classification

An important consequence of the theory of entropy of Z-actions is that the events measurable with respect to the far future coincide (modulo null sets) with those measurable with respect to the distant past, and that measuring the entropy using the past will give the same value as measuring it using the future. In this paper we show that for measures invariant under multiparameter algebraic actions if the entropy attached to coarse Lyapunov foliations fail to display a stronger symmetry property of a similar type this forces the measure to be invariant under non-trivial unipotent groups. Some consequences of this phenomenon are noted.

From rate distortion theory to metric mean dimension: variational principle

The purpose of this paper is to point out a new connection between information theory and dynamical systems. In the information theory side, we consider rate distortion theory, which studies lossy data compression of stochastic processes under distortion constraints. In the dynamical systems side, we consider mean dimension theory, which studies how many parameters per second we need to describe a dynamical system. The main results are new variational principles connecting rate distortion function to metric mean dimension.

Spectral gap in the group of affine transformations over prime fields

We study random walks on the semi-direct product of F_p^d and SL_d(F_p). We estimate the spectral gap in terms of the spectral gap of the projection to the linear part SL_d(F_p). This problem is motivated by an analogue in the isometry group of Euclidean space, which have application to smoothness of self-similar measures.

Mean dimension of $\mathbb{Z}^k$-actions

Mean dimension is a topological invariant for dynamical systems that is meaningful for systems with infinite dimension and infinite entropy. Given a $\mathbb{Z}^k$-action on a compact metric space $X$, we study the following three problems closely related to mean dimension. (1) When is $X$ isomorphic to the inverse limit of finite entropy systems? (2) Suppose the topological entropy $h_{\mathrm{top}}(X)$ is infinite. How much topological entropy can be detected if one considers $X$ only up to a given level of accuracy? How fast does this amount of entropy grow as the level of resolution becomes finer and finer? (3) When can we embed $X$ into the $\mathbb{Z}^k$-shift on the infinite dimensional cube $([0,1]^D)^{\mathbb{Z}^k}$? These were investigated for $\mathbb{Z}$-actions in [Lindenstrauss, Mean dimension, small entropy factors and an embedding theorem, Inst. Hautes Études Sci. Publ. Math. \textbf{89} (1999) 227-262], but the generalization to $\mathbb{Z}^k$ remained an open problem. When $X$ has the marker property, in particular when $X$ has a completely aperiodic minimal factor, we completely solve (1) and a natural interpretation of (2), and give a reasonably satisfactory answer to (3). A key ingredient is a new method to continuously partition every orbit into good pieces.

Random walks in the group of Euclidean isometries and self-similar measures

We study products of random isometries acting on Euclidean space. Building on previous work of the second author, we prove a local limit theorem for balls of shrinking radius with exponential speed under the assumption that a Markov operator associated to the rotation component of the isometries has spectral gap. We also prove that certain self-similar measures are absolutely continuous with smooth densities. These families of self-similar measures give higher dimensional analogues of Bernoulli convolutions on which absolute continuity can be established for contraction ratios in an open set.

Quantum Ergodicity and Averaging Operators on the Sphere

We prove quantum ergodicity for certain orthonormal bases of $L^2(\mathbb{S}^2)$, consisting of joint eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and the discrete averaging operator over a finite set of rotations, generating a free group. If in addition the rotations are algebraic we give a quantified version of this result. The methods used also give a new, simplified proof of quantum ergodicity for large regular graphs.

Topological Self-joinings of Cartan Actions by Toral Automorphisms

We show that if $r\geq 3$ and $α$ is a faithful $Z^r$-Cartan action on a torus $T^d$ by automorphisms, then any closed subset of $(T^d)^2$ which is invariant and topologically transitive under the diagonal $\bZ^r$-action by $α$ is homogeneous, in the sense that it is either the full torus $(T^d)^2$, or a finite set of rational points, or a finite disjoint union of parallel translates of some d-dimensional invariant subtorus. A counterexample is constructed for the rank 2 case.

Joint Quasimodes, Positive Entropy, and Quantum Unique Ergodicity

We study joint quasimodes of the Laplacian and one Hecke operator on compact congruence surfaces, and give conditions on the orders of the quasimodes that guarantee positive entropy on almost every ergodic component of the corresponding semiclassical measures. Together with the measure classification result of the second-named author, this implies Quantum Unique Ergodicity for such functions. Our result is optimal with respect to the dimension of the space from which the quasi-mode is constructed. We also study equidistribution for sequences of joint quasimodes of the two partial Laplacians on compact irreducible quotients of $\mathbb{H}\times\mathbb{H}$.

The distribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface, and Duke's theorem

We give an ergodic theoretic proof of a theorem of Duke about equidistribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface. The proof is closely related to the work of Yu. Linnik and B. Skubenko, who in particular proved this equidistribution under an additional congruence assumption on the discriminant. We give a more conceptual treatment using entropy theory, and show how to use positivity of the discriminant as a substitute for Linnik's congruence condition.

Homogeneous orbit closures and applications

We give new classes of examples of orbits of the diagonal group in the space of unit volume lattices in R^d for d > 2 with nice (homogeneous) orbit closures, as well as examples of orbits with explicitly computable but irregular orbit closures. We give Diophantine applications to the former, for instance we show that if x is the cubic root of 2 then for any y,z in R liminf |n| =0 (as |n| goes to infinity), where denotes the distance of a real number c to the integers.

Graph Eigenfunctions and Quantum Unique Ergodicity

We apply the techniques of our previous paper to study joint eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and one Hecke operator on compact congruence surfaces, and joint eigenfunctions of the two partial Laplacians on compact quotients of $\mathbb{H}\times\mathbb{H}$. In both cases, we show that quantum limit measures of such sequences of eigenfunctions carry positive entropy on almost every ergodic component. Together with prior work of the second named author, this implies Quantum Unique Ergodicity for such functions.

Distribution of periodic torus orbits and Duke's theorem for cubic fields

We study periodic torus orbits on spaces of lattices. Using the action of the group of adelic points of the underlying tori, we define a natural equivalence relation on these orbits, and show that the equivalence classes become uniformly distributed. This is a cubic analogue of Duke's theorem about the distribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface: suitably interpreted, the ideal classes of a cubic totally real field are equidistributed in the modular 5-fold SL_3(Z)\SL_3(R)/SO_3(R). In particular, this proves (a stronger form of) the folklore conjecture that the collection of maximal compact flats in SL_3(Z)\SL_3(R)/SO_3(R) of volume less than V becomes equidistributed as V goes to infinity. The proof combines subconvexity estimates, measure classification, and local harmonic analysis.

Non-localization of eigenfunctions on large regular graphs

We give a delocalization estimate for eigenfunctions of the discrete Laplacian on large $d+1$-regular graphs, showing that any subset of the graph supporting $ε$ of the $L^2$ mass of an eigenfunction must be large. For graphs satisfying a mild girth-like condition, this bound will be exponential in the size of the graph.
