Revisited convexity notions for $L^\infty$ variational problems

We address a deep study of the convexity notions that arise in the study of weak* lower semicontinuity of supremal functionals as well as those raised by the power-law approximation of such functionals. Our quest is motivated by the knowledge we have on the analogous integral functionals and aims at establishing a solid groundwork to ease any research in the $L^\infty$ context.

Relaxation of one-dimensional nonlocal supremal functionals in the Sobolev setting

We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the density $W:\mathbb R^d\times\mathbb R ^d\to\mathbb R$ in order to ensure the sequential weak* lower semicontinuity of the functional $J: W^{1,\infty}(I;\mathbb R^d)\to \mathbb R$, defined as \begin{align*} J(u):=ess\,sup_{I\times I}W(u'(x), u'(y)), \end{align*} when $I$ is an open and bounded interval of $\mathbb R$. We also show that, when $d=1$, the lower semicontinuous envelope of $I$ in general can be obtained by replacing $W$ by its separately level convex envelope.

Asymptotic analysis of thin structures with point dependent energy growth

$3d-2d$ dimensional reduction for hyperelastic thin films modeled through energies with point dependent growth, assuming that the sample is clamped on the lateral boundary, is performed in the framework of $Γ$-convergence. Integral representation results, with a more regular lagrangian related to the original energy density, are provided for the lower dimensional limiting energy, in different contexts.

Asymptotic step-like solutions to the singularly perturbed Burgers' equation

The paper deals with a problem of asymptotic step-like solutions to the Burgers' equation with variable coefficients and a small parameter. By means of the non-linear WKB method, the algorithm of constructing these asymptotic solutions is proposed and statements on justification of the algorithm are proved. The obtained results are illustrated by an example, for which the first asymptotic step-like approximation is explicitly found. The asymptotic solution is global, and has a form of the shock wave type function. There are also given graphs of these approximate solutions for certain numerical parameters.

The variational modeling of hierarchical structured deformations

Hierarchical (first-order) structured deformations are studied from the variational point of view. The main contributions of the present research are the first steps, at the theoretical level, to establish a variational framework to minimize mechanically relevant energies defined on hierarchical structured deformations. Two results are obtained here: (i) an approximation theorem and (ii) the assignment of an energy to a hierarchical structured deformation by means of an iterative procedure. This has the effect of validating the proposal made in [Deseri & Owen: Elasticity with hierarchical disarrangements: a field theory that admits slips and separations at multiple submacroscopic levels. J.~Elast., 135 (2019), 149--182] to study deformations admitting slips and separations at multiple submacroscopic levels. An explicit example is provided to illustrate the behavior of the proposed iterative procedure and relevant directions for future research are highlighted.

Cartesian convexity as the key notion in the variational existence theory for nonlocal supremal functionals

Motivated by the direct method in the calculus of variations in $L^{\infty}$, our main result identifies the notion of convexity characterizing the weakly$^*$ lower semicontinuity of nonlocal supremal functionals: Cartesian level convexity. This new concept coincides with separate level convexity in the one-dimensional setting and is strictly weaker for higher dimensions. We discuss relaxation in the vectorial case, showing that the relaxed functional will not generally maintain the supremal form. Apart from illustrating this fact with examples of multi-well type, we present precise criteria for structure-preservation. When the structure is preserved, a representation formula is given in terms of the Cartesian level convex envelope of the (diagonalized) original supremand. This work does not only complete the picture of the analysis initiated in [Kreisbeck \& Zappale, Calc.~Var.~PDE, 2020], but also establishes a connection with double integrals. We relate the two classes of functionals via an $L^p$-approximation in the sense of $Γ$-convergence for diverging integrability exponents. The proofs exploit recent results on nonlocal inclusions and their asymptotic behavior, and use tools from Young measure theory and convex analysis.

Periodic homogenization in the context of structured deformations

An energy for first-order structured deformations in the context of periodic homogenization is obtained. This energy, defined in principle by relaxation of an initial energy of integral type featuring contributions of bulk and interfacial terms, is proved to possess an integral representation in terms of relaxed bulk and interfacial energy densities. These energy densities, in turn, are obtained via asymptotic cell formulae defined by suitably averaging, over larger and larger cubes, the bulk and surface contributions of the initial energy. The integral representation theorem, the main result of this paper, is obtained by mixing blow-up techniques, typical in the context of structured deformations, with the averaging process proper of the theory of homogenization.

Relaxation for an optimal design problem in $BD(Ω)$

We obtain a measure representation for a functional arising in the context of optimal design problems under linear growth conditions. The functional in question corresponds to the relaxation with respect to a pair $(χ,u)$, where $χ$ is the characteristic function of a set of finite perimeter and $u$ is a function of bounded deformation, of an energy with a bulk term depending on the symmetrised gradient as well as a perimeter term.

Relaxation of functionals with linear growth: interactions of emerging measures and free discontinuities

For an integral functional defined on functions $(u,v)\in W^{1,1}\times L^1$ featuring a prototypical strong interaction term between $u$ and $v$, we calculate its relaxation in the space of functions with bounded variations and Radon measures. Interplay between measures and discontinuities bring various additional difficulties, and concentration effects in recovery sequences play a major role for the relaxed functional even if the limit measures are absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue one.

An optimal design problem with non-standard growth and no concentration effects

We obtain an integral representation for certain functionals arising in the context of optimal design and damage evolution problems under non-standard growth conditions and perimeter penalisation. Under our hypotheses, the integral representation includes a term which is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure and a perimeter term, but no additional singular term. We also study some dimension reduction problems providing results for the optimal design of thin films.

Lower semicontinuity and relaxation of nonlocal $L^\infty$-functionals

We study variational problems involving nonlocal supremal functionals $L^\infty(Ω;\mathbb{R}^m) \ni u\mapsto {\rm ess sup}_{(x,y)\in Ω\times Ω} W(u(x), u(y)),$ where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded, open set and $W:\mathbb{R}^m\times\mathbb{R}^m\to \mathbb{R}$ is a suitable function. Motivated by existence theory via the direct method, we identify a necessary and sufficient condition for $L^\infty$-weak$^\ast$ lower semicontinuity of these functionals, namely, separate level convexity of a symmetrized and suitably diagonalized version of the supremands. More generally, we show that the supremal structure of the functionals is preserved during the process of relaxation. Whether the same statement holds in the related context of double-integral functionals is currently still open. Our proof relies substantially on the connection between supremal and indicator functionals. This allows us to recast the relaxation problem into characterizing weak$^\ast$ closures of a class of nonlocal inclusions, which is of independent interest. To illustrate the theory, we determine explicit relaxation formulas for examples of functionals with different multi-well supremands.

Upscaling and spatial localization of non-local energies with applications to crystal plasticity

We describe multiscale geometrical changes via structured deformations $(g,G)$ and the non-local energetic response at a point $x$ via a function $Ψ$ of the weighted averages of the jumps $[u_{n}](y)$ of microlevel deformations $u_{n}$ at points $y$ within a distance $r$ of $x$. The deformations $u_{n}$ are chosen so that $\lim_{n\to \infty }u_{n}=g$ and $\lim_{n\to \infty }\nabla u_{n}=$ $G$. We provide conditions on $Ψ$ under which the upscaling "$n\to \infty$" results in a macroscale energy that depends through $Ψ$ on (1) the jumps $[g]$ of $g$ and the "disarrangment field" $\nabla g-G$, (2) the "horizon" $r$, and (3) the weighting function $α_{r}$ for microlevel averaging of $[u_{n}](y)$. We also study the upscaling "$n\to \infty$" followed by spatial localization "$r\to 0$" and show that this succession of processes results in a purely local macroscale energy $I(g,G)$ that depends through $Ψ$ upon the jumps $[g]$ of $g$ and the "disarrangment field" $\nabla g-G$, alone. In special settings, such macroscale energies $I(g,G)$ have been shown to support the phenomena of yielding and hysteresis, and our results provide a broader setting for studying such yielding and hysteresis. As an illustration, we apply our results in the context of the plasticity of single crystals.

Loss of double-integral character during relaxation

We provide explicit examples to show that the relaxation of functionals $$ L^p(Ω;\mathbb{R}^m) \ni u\mapsto \int_Ω\int_ΩW(u(x), u(y))\, dx\, dy, $$ where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is an open and bounded set, $1<p<\infty$ and $W:\mathbb{R}^m\times \mathbb{R}^m\to \mathbb{R}$ a suitable integrand, is in general not of double-integral form. This proves an up to now open statement in [Pedregal, Rev. Mat. Complut. 29 (2016)] and [Bellido & Mora-Corral, SIAM J. Math. Anal. 50 (2018)]. The arguments are inspired by recent results regarding the structure of (approximate) nonlocal inclusions, in particular, their invariance under diagonalization of the constraining set. For a complementary viewpoint, we also discuss a class of double-integral functionals for which relaxation is in fact structure preserving and the relaxed integrands arise from separate convexification.

Multiscale homogenization of integral convex functionals in Orlicz Sobolev setting

The $Γ$-limit of a family of functionals $u\mapsto \int_{Ω}f\left( \frac{x}{\varepsilon },\frac{x}{\varepsilon ^{2}},D^{s}u\right) dx$ is obtained for $s=1,2$ and when the integrand $f=f\left( y,z,v\right) $ is a continous function, periodic in $y$ and $z$ and convex with respect to $v$ with nonstandard growth. The reiterated two-scale limits of second order derivative are characterized in this setting.
