The fractional Porous Medium Equation on graphs

We study the fractional porous medium equation on connected infinite graphs with no local finiteness assumption. We introduce a notion of weak dual solution adapted to the discrete setting, and establish existence results for nonnegative initial data belonging to a weighted space defined through the fractional Green function, extending beyond the classical $\ell^1$ framework. Our approach relies on weighted estimates and on a detailed analysis of the associated fractional Green function. In the particular case of infinite trees with standard weights, we establish comparison principles and derive estimates for the fractional Green function, which lead to quantitative smoothing effects for solutions.

Semilinear Diffusion Equations on Infinite Graphs: The Dissipative and Lipschitz Cases

We study a class of semilinear diffusion equations on infinite, connected, weighted graphs, focusing on two types of nonlinearities: monotone decreasing and Lipschitz continuous. Under minimal structural assumptions on the graph, we establish existence, uniqueness, and regularity of mild solutions for initial data in $\ell^p$ spaces, with $1\leq p<\infty$. Our approach relies on time discretization via an implicit Euler scheme and an exhaustion technique using Dirichlet subgraphs. As a by-product, we obtain existence and uniqueness results for a related time-independent equation. Finite-time extinction and positivity for solutions under a specific forcing term are also proved.

Some obstacle problems for partially hinged plates and related optimization issues

We study optimization problems for partially hinged rectangular plates, modeling bridge roadways, in the presence of real and artificial obstacles. Real obstacles represent structural constraints to avoid, while artificial ones are introduced to enhance stability. For the former, aiming to prevent collisions, we set up a worst-case optimization problem in which we minimize the amplitude of oscillations with respect to the density distribution; for the latter, aiming to improve the torsional stability, we minimize, with respect to the obstacles, the maximum of a gap function quantifying the displacement between the long edges of the plate. For both problems, existence results are provided, along with a discussion about qualitative properties of optimal density distributions and obstacles.

Weighted Hardy-Rellich inequalities via the Emden-Fowler transform

We exploit a technique based on the Emden-Fowler transform to prove optimal Hardy-Rellich inequalities on cones, including the punctured space $\mathb{R}^N\setminus\{0\}$ and the half space as particular cases. We find optimal constants for classes of test functions vanishing on the boundary of the cone and possibly orthogonal to prescribed eigenspaces of the Laplace Beltrami operator restricted to the spherical projection of the cone. Furthermore, we show that extremals do not exist in the natural function spaces. Depending on the parameters, certain resonance phenomena can occur. For proper cones, this is excluded when considering test functions with compact support. Finally, for suitable subsets of the cones we provide improved Hardy-Rellich inequalities, under different boundary conditions, with optimal remainder terms.

Smoothing effects and extinction in finite time for fractional fast diffusions on Riemannian manifolds

We study nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy problem for the Fractional Fast Diffusion Equation on a suitable class of connected, noncompact Riemannian manifolds. This parabolic equation is both singular and nonlocal: the diffusion is driven by the (spectral) fractional Laplacian on the manifold, while the nonlinearity is a concave power that makes the diffusion singular, so that solutions lose mass and may extinguish in finite time. Existence of mild solutions follows by nowadays standard nonlinear semigroups techniques, and we use these solutions as the building blocks for a more general class of so-called weak dual solutions, which allow for data both in the usual $L^1$ space and in a larger weighted space, determined in terms of the fractional Green function. We focus in particular on a priori smoothing estimates (also in weighted $L^p$ spaces) for a quite large class of weak dual solutions. We also show pointwise lower bounds for solutions, showing in particular that solutions have infinite speed of propagation. Finally, we start the study of how solutions extinguish in finite time, providing suitable sharp extinction rates.

The Fractional Porous Medium Equation on noncompact Riemannian manifolds

We study nonnegative solutions to the Fractional Porous Medium Equation on a suitable class of connected, noncompact Riemannian manifolds. We provide existence and smoothing estimates for solutions, in an appropriate weak (dual) sense, for data belonging either to the usual $L^1$ space or to a considerably larger weighted space determined in terms of the fractional Green function. The class of manifolds for which the results hold include both the Euclidean and the hyperbolic spaces and even in the Euclidean situation involve a class of data which is larger than previously known one.

Classification of radial solutions to $-Δ_g u=e^u$ on Riemannian models

We provide a complete classification with respect to asymptotic behaviour, stability and intersections properties of radial smooth solutions to the equation $-Δ_g u=e^u$ on Riemannian model manifolds $(M,g)$ in dimension $N\ge 2$. Our assumptions include Riemannian manifolds with sectional curvatures bounded or unbounded from below. Intersection and stability properties of radial solutions are influenced by the dimension $N$ in the sense that two different kinds of behaviour occur when $2\leq N\le 9$ or $N\geq 10$, respectively. The crucial role of these dimensions in classifying solutions is well-known in Euclidean space.

The Fractional Porous Medium Equation on the hyperbolic space

We consider the nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation of porous medium type, whose diffusion is driven by the (spectral) fractional Laplacian on the hyperbolic space. We provide existence results for solutions, in an appropriate weak sense, for data belonging either to the usual $L^p$ spaces or to larger (weighted) spaces determined either in terms of a ground state of $Δ_{\mathbb{H}^n}$, or of the (fractional) Green's function. For such solutions, we also prove different kind of smoothing effects, in the form of quantitative $L^1-L^\infty$ estimates. To the best of our knowledge, this seems the first time in which the fractional porous medium equation has been treated on non-compact, geometrically non-trivial examples.

Hardy-Rellich and second order Poincaré identities on the hyperbolic space via Bessel pairs

We prove a family of Hardy-Rellich and Poincaré identities and inequalities on the hyperbolic space having, as particular cases, improved Hardy-Rellich, Rellich and second order Poincaré inequalities. All remainder terms provided considerably improve those already known in literature, and all identities hold with same constants for radial operators also. Furthermore, as applications of the main results, second order versions of the uncertainty principle on the hyperbolic space are derived.

An optimal improvement for the Hardy inequality on the hyperbolic space and related manifolds

We prove \emph{optimal} improvements of the Hardy inequality on the hyperbolic space. Here, optimal means that the resulting operator is critical in the sense of [J.Funct.Anal. 266 (2014), pp. 4422-89], namely the associated inequality cannot be further improved. Such inequalities arise from more general, \emph{optimal} ones valid for the operator $ P_λ:= -Δ_{\mathbb{H}^N} - λ$ where $0 \leq λ\leq λ_{1}(\mathbb{H}^N)$ and $λ_{1}(\mathbb{H}^N)$ is the bottom of the $L^2$ spectrum of $-Δ_{\mathbb{H}^N} $, a problem that had been studied in [J.Funct.Anal. 272 (2017), pp. 1661-1703 ] only for the operator $P_{λ_{1}(\mathbb{H}^N)}$. A different, critical and new inequality on $\mathbb{H}^N$, locally of Hardy type, is also shown. Such results have in fact greater generality since there are shown on general Cartan-Hadamard manifolds under curvature assumptions, possibly depending on the point. Existence/nonexistence of extremals for the related Hardy-Poincaré inequalities are also proved using concentration-compactness technique and a Liouville comparison theorem. As applications of our inequalities we obtain an improved Rellich inequality and we derive a quantitative version of Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl uncertainty principle for the operator $P_λ.$

Maximizing the ratio of eigenvalues of non-homogeneous partially hinged plates

We study the spectrum of non-homogeneous partially hinged plates having structural engineering applications. A possible way to prevent instability phenomena is to maximize the ratio between the frequencies of certain oscillating modes with respect to the density function of the plate; we prove existence of optimal densities and we investigate their analytic expression. This analysis suggests where to locate reinforcing material within the plate; some numerical experiments give further information and support the theoretical results.

On some strong Poincaré inequalities on Riemannian models and their improvements

We prove second and fourth order improved Poincaré type inequalities on the hyperbolic space involving Hardy-type remainder terms. Since theirs l.h.s. only involve the radial part of the gradient or of the laplacian, they can be seen as stronger versions of the classical Poincaré inequality. We show that such inequalities hold true on model manifolds as well, under suitable curvature assumptions and sharpness of some constants is also discussed.

On the first frequency of reinforced partially hinged plates

We consider a partially hinged rectangular plate and its normal modes. The dynamical properties of the plate are influenced by the spectrum of the associated eingenvalue problem. In order to improve the stability of the plate, it seems reasonable to place a certain amount of stiffening material in appropriate regions. If we look at the partial differential equation appearing in the model, this corresponds to insert a suitable weight coefficient inside the equation. A possible way to locate such regions is to study the eigenvalue problem associated to the aforementioned weighted equation. In the present paper we focus our attention essentially on the first eigenvalue and on its minimization in terms of the weight. We prove the existence of minimizing weights inside special classes and we try to describe them together with the corresponding eigenfunctions.

Improved L$^p$-Poincaré inequalities on the hyperbolic space

We investigate the possibility of improving the $p$-Poincaré inequality $\|\nabla_{\mathbb{H}^N} u\|_p \ge Λ_p \|u\|_p$ on the hyperbolic space, where $p>2$ and $Λ_p:=[(N-1)/p]^{p}$ is the best constant for which such inequality holds. We prove several different, and independent, improved inequalities, one of which is a Poincaré-Hardy inequality, namely an improvement of the best $p$-Poincaré inequality in terms of the Hardy weight $r^{-p}$, $r$ being geodesic distance from a given pole. Certain Hardy-Maz'ya-type inequalities in the Euclidean half-space are also obtained.

Poincaré and Hardy inequalities on homogeneous trees

We study Hardy-type inequalities on infinite homogeneous trees. More precisely, we derive optimal Hardy weights for the combinatorial Laplacian in this setting and we obtain, as a consequence, optimal improvements for the Poincaré inequality.

Improved Multipolar Poincaré-Hardy inequalities on Cartan-Hadamard Manifolds

We prove a family of improved multipolar Poincaré-Hardy inequalities on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. For suitable configurations of poles, these inequalities yield an improved multipolar Hardy inequality and an improved multipolar Poincaré inequality such that the critical unipolar singular mass is reached at any pole.

A Minimaxmax Problem for Improving the Torsional Stability of Rectangular Plates

We use a gap function in order to compare the torsional performances of different reinforced plates under the action of external forces. Then, we address a shape optimization problem, whose target is to minimize the torsional displacements of the plate: this leads us to set up a minimaxmax problem, which includes a new kind of worst-case optimization. Two kinds of reinforcements are considered: one aims at strengthening the plate, the other aims at weakening the action of the external forces. For both of them, we study the existence of optima within suitable classes of external forces and reinforcements. Our results are complemented with numerical experiments and with a number of open problems and conjectures.

Energy transfer between modes in a nonlinear beam equation

We consider the nonlinear nonlocal beam evolution equation introduced by Woinowsky- Krieger. We study the existence and behavior of periodic solutions: these are called nonlinear modes. Some solutions only have two active modes and we investigate whether there is an energy transfer between them. The answer depends on the geometry of the energy function which, in turn, depends on the amount of compression compared to the spatial frequencies of the involved modes. Our results are complemented with numerical experiments, overall, they give a complete picture of the instabilities that may occur in the beam. We expect these results to hold also in more complicated dynamical system
