Constructing balanced equations of motion for particles in general relativistic theories: the general case

We present a general approach for the formulation of equations of motion for compact objects in general relativistic theories. The particle is assumed to be moving in a geometric background which in turn is asymptotically flat. Our approach defines a model for particle like objects which emphasizes different aspects of a set of gravitating objects; by concentrating in the main contributions coming from back reaction effects due to gravitational radiation.

Constructing balanced equations of motion for particles in general relativity: the null gauge case

We present a convenient null gauge for the construction of the balanced equations of motion. This null gauge has the property that the asymptotic structure is intimately related to the interior one; in particular there is a strong connexion between the field equation and the balanced equations of motion. We present the balanced equations of motion in second order of the acceleration. We solve the required components of the field equation at their respective required orders, $G^2$ and $G^3$. We indicate how this approach can be extended to higher orders.

Photon spheres in Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories and circular null geodesics in axially-symmetric spacetimes

In this article we extend a recent theorem proven by Hod (Phys. Lett. B, {\bf 727}, 345--348, 2013) to $n$-dimensional Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories, which gives an upper bound for the photon sphere radii of spherically symmetric black holes. As applications of these results we give a universal upper bound for the real part of quasinormal modes in the WKB limit and a universal lower bound for the position of the first relativistic image in the strong lensing regime produced by these type of black holes. For the axially-symmetric case, we also make some general comments (independent of the underlying gravitational theory) on the relation between circular null geodesics and the fastest way to circle a black hole.

A Jacobian elliptic single-field inflation

In the scenario of single-field inflation, this field is done in terms of Jacobian elliptic functions. This approach provides, when constrained to particular cases, analytic solutions already known in the past, generalizing them to a bigger family of analytical solutions. The emergent cosmology is analysed using the Hamilton-Jacobi approach and then, the main results are contrasted with the recent measurements obtained from the Planck 2015 data.

Low X-ray Luminosity Galaxy Clusters. III: Weak Lensing Mass Determination at 0.18 $<$ z $<$ 0.70

This is the third of a series of papers of low X-ray luminosity galaxy clusters. In this work we present the weak lensing analysis of eight clusters, based on observations obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph in the $g'$, $r'$ and $i'$ passbands. For this purpose, we have developed a pipeline for the lensing analysis of ground-based images and we have performed tests applied to simulated data. We have determined the masses of seven galaxy clusters, six of them measured for the first time. For the four clusters with availably spectroscopic data, we find a general agreement between the velocity dispersions obtained via weak lensing assuming a Singular Isothermal Sphere profile, and those obtained from the redshift distribution of member galaxies. The correlation between our weak lensing mass determinations and the X-ray luminosities are suitably fitted by other observations of the $M-L_{X}$ relation and models.

Higher dimensional conformal metrics from PDEs and Null Surface Formulation of GR

We analyze the relationship between $n$-dimensional conformal metrics and a certain class of partial differential equations (PDEs) that are in duality with the eikonal equation. In particular, we extend the Null Surface Formulation of General Relativity to higher dimensions and give explicit expressions for the components of the metric and the generalized Wünschmann-like metricity conditions. We also compute the equation that the conformal factor must satisfy in order the metric be a solution of the Einstein equations.

New derivation for the equations of motion for particles in electromagnetism

We present equations of motion for charged particles using balanced equations, and without introducing explicitly divergent quantities. This derivation contains as particular cases some well known equations of motion, as the Lorentz-Dirac equations. An study of our main equations in terms of order of the interaction with the external field conduces us to the Landau-Lifshitz equations. We find that the analysis in second order show a special behavior. We give an explicit presentation up to third order of our main equations, and expressions for the calculation of general orders.

Peculiar anisotropic stationary spherically symmetric solution of Einstein equations

Motivated by studies on gravitational lenses, we present an exact solution of the field equations of general relativity, which is static and spherically symmetric, has no mass but has a non-vanishing spacelike components of the stress-energy-momentum tensor. In spite of its strange nature, this solution provides with non-trivial descriptions of gravitational effects. We show that the main aspects found in the \emph{dark matter phenomena} can be satisfactorily described by this geometry. We comment on the relevance it could have to consider non-vanishing spacelike components of the stress-energy-momentum tensor ascribed to dark matter.

Gravitational lens optical scalars in terms of energy-momentum distributions

This is a general work on gravitational lensing. We present new expressions for the optical scalars and the deflection angle in terms of the energy-momentum tensor components of matter distributions. Our work generalizes standard references in the literature where normally stringent assumptions are made on the sources. The new expressions are manifestly gauge invariant, since they are presented in terms of curvature components. We also present a method of approximation for solving the lens equations, that can be applied to any order.

On computations of angular momentum and its flux in numerical relativity

The purpose of this note is to point out ambiguities that appear in the calculation of angular momentum and its radiated counterpart when some simple formulae are used to compute them. We illustrate, in two simple different examples, how incorrect results can be obtained with them. Additionally, we discuss the magnitude of possible errors in well known situations.

Estimating total momentum at finite distances

We study the difficulties associated with the evaluation of the total Bondi momentum at finite distances around the central source of a general (asymptotically flat) spacetime. Since the total momentum is only rigorously defined at future null infinity, both finite distance and gauge effects must be taken into account for a correct computation of this quantity. Our discussion is applicable in general contexts but is particularly relevant in numerically constructed spacetimes for both extracting important physical information and assessing the accuracy of additional quantities.

Radiating black hole solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In this paper, we find some new exact solutions to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet equations. First, we prove a theorem which allows us to find a large family of solutions to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in $n$-dimensions. This family of solutions represents dynamic black holes and contains, as particular cases, not only the recently found Vaidya-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole, but also other physical solutions that we think are new, such as, the Gauss-Bonnet versions of the Bonnor-Vaidya(de Sitter/anti-de Sitter) solution, a global monopole and the Husain black holes. We also present a more general version of this theorem in which less restrictive conditions on the energy-momentum tensor are imposed. As an application of this theorem, we present the exact solution describing a black hole radiating a charged null fluid in a Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics.

Cartan's equivalence method and null coframes in General Relativity

Using Cartan's equivalence method for point transformations we obtain from first principles the conformal geometry associated with third order ODEs and a special class of PDEs in two dimensions. We explicitly construct the null tetrads of a family of Lorentzian metrics, the conformal group in three and four dimensions and the so called normal metric connection. A special feature of this connection is that the non vanishing components of its torsion depend on one relative invariant, the (generalized) Wünschmann Invariant. We show that the above mentioned construction naturally contains the Null Surface Formulation of General Relativity.

N-dimensional geometries and Einstein equations from systems of PDE's

The aim of the present work is twofold: first, we show how all the $n$-dimensional Riemannian and Lorentzian metrics can be constructed from a certain class of systems of second-order PDE's which are in duality to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and second we impose the Einstein equations to these PDE's.
