3d Ising Field Theory with Magnetic Deformation: Fuzzy Sphere Meets TCSA

We study the magnetic deformation of the $(2+1)$d Ising CFT, also known as Ising Field Theory (IFT), on a spatial sphere. We use the Fuzzy Sphere (FS) Ising setup and compare it to the Truncated Conformal Space Approach (TCSA). Universal, infinite volume, IFT quantities are extracted by modeling the effects of curvature, as expected from a local effective theory on the sphere. We find evidence that IFT contains a bound-state with a small binding energy. Locality also allows us to extract the same IFT quantities from different angular momentum sectors, providing additional consistency checks.

Improving 3d Ising OPE Coefficients with Fuzzy Sphere Conformal Generators

We use the $K$ special conformal generator in the Fuzzy sphere setup of the Ising CFT to determine primary states. For $\Delta \lesssim 8$, we recover the known primaries and find several new ones, including in the parity-odd sector. We then use these primaries to compute OPE coefficients. We find that using primaries constructed from special-$K$ allows for better extrapolation of OPE coefficients to the CFT limit, because of the existence of an $O(1)$ gap between primaries and descendants in the spectrum of eigenvalues of $|K|^2$ which protects the primaries from strongly mixing with descendants. We compare the CFT data we obtain with the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis.

Studying $\textrm{QED}_3$ with radial quantization on the lattice: Free limit

To investigate the three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics in the radial quantization on the lattice, the lattice action is constructed and the free limit is studied on $S^2 \times \mathbb{R}$. With the overlap fermion, it is numerically verified that the important symmetries of the theory can be realized on the lattice. The analytic correlators are derived and compared to the lattice results, which agree including the overall normalization. The $O(a^2)$-scaling is confirmed toward the analytic value in the continuum limit, and the number of reproduced excited states is estimated heuristically for the first few refinement levels. Our study helps us identify the features of the theory that we can study on the icosahedral lattice without fine-tuning.

Toolkit for General 2d Scalar Potential in LCT

We present efficient algorithms for obtaining the Hamiltonian in Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT) for a 2d scalar field with a generic potential. We apply this method to the sine-Gordon and sinh-Gordon models in $1+1d$, and find precise agreement with integrability results when the scaling dimension $\Delta$ of the deforming cosine/cosinh potential is in the range $ \Delta \leq 1$. The agreement provides additional evidence for a recent conjecture for how to compute the effective lightcone Hamiltonian in this class of models. In addition, to high precision, we provide the first direct confirmation for the conjectured self-duality of the sinh-Gordon model ($\Delta < 0)$, which relates $\Delta \leftrightarrow 4/\Delta$. As the dimension approaches the upper limit $\Delta=1$ from below, we show analytically that the Hamiltonian matrix elements exactly reproduce those of a free Majorana fermion, demonstrating how bosonization is manifested in the LCT basis. We comment on the possible extension of the approach to $\Delta > 1$.

Constructing the Infrared Conformal Generators on the Fuzzy Sphere

We investigate the conformal algebra on the fuzzy sphere, and in particular the generators of translations and special conformal transformations which are emergent symmetries in the infinite IR but are broken along the RG flow. We show how to extract these generators using the energy momentum tensor, which is complicated by the fact that one does not have a priori access to the energy momentum tensor of the CFT limit but rather must construct it numerically. We discuss and quantitatively analyze the main sources of corrections to the conformal generators due to the breaking of scale-invariance at finite energy, and develop efficient methods for removing these corrections. The resulting generators have matrix elements that match CFT predictions with accuracy varying from sub-percent level for the lowest-lying states up to several percent accuracy for states with dimension $\sim 5$ with $N=16$ fermions. We show that the generators can be used to accurately identify primary operators vs descendant operators in energy ranges where the spectrum is too dense to do the identification solely based on the approximate integer spacing within conformal multiplets.

Lightcone Hamiltonian for Ising Field Theory I: T < T_c

We study 2d Ising Field Theory (IFT) in the low-temperature phase in lightcone quantization, and show that integrating out zero modes generates a very compact form for the effective lightcone interaction that depends on the finite volume vacuum expectation value of the $\sigma$ operator. This form is most naturally understood in a conformal basis for the lightcone Hilbert space. We further verify that this simple form reproduces to high accuracy results for the spectra, the $c$-function, and the form-factors from integrability methods for the magnetic deformation of IFT. For generic non-integrable values of parameters we also compute the above observables and compare our numeric results to those of equal-time truncation. In particular, we report on new measurements of various bound-state form-factors as well as the stress-tensor spectral density. We find that the stress tensor spectral density provides additional evidence that certain resonances of IFT are surprisingly narrow, even at generic strong coupling. Explicit example code for constructing the effective Hamiltonian is included in an appendix.

Large Momentum EFT and Lightcone Quantization

We develop methods for computing the effective action at infinite momentum for $1+1d$ QFTs at finite volume which do not rely on the theory having a Lagrangian description. We do this by taking the infinite momentum limit of equal-time quantization and integrating out all except for the chiral modes of the theory. Our main application of this method is to the Ising Field Theory (IFT), with an energy and magnetic deformation, where we compute the effective lightcone Hamiltonian numerically and check it against results from TCSA. Remarkably, in the low-temperature phase, the Lorentz invariant effective Hamiltonian at infinite momentum takes a very compact form and depends on the volume only through the finite volume vacuum expectation value of $\langle\sigma\rangle$, the spin operator.

Thermalization and chaos in a 1+1d QFT

We study aspects of chaos and thermodynamics at strong coupling in a scalar model using LCT numerical methods. We find that our eigenstate spectrum satisfies Wigner-Dyson statistics and that the coefficients describing eigenstates in our basis satisfy Random Matrix Theory (RMT) statistics. At weak coupling, though the bulk of states satisfy RMT statistics, we find several scar states as well. We then use these chaotic states to compute the equation of state of the model, obtaining results consistent with Conformal Field Theory (CFT) expectations at temperatures above the scale of relevant interactions. We also test the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis by computing the expectation value of local operators in eigenstates, and check that their behavior is consistent with thermal CFT values at high temperatures. Finally, we compute the Spectral Form Factor (SFF), which has the expected behavior associated with the equation of state at short times and chaos at long times. We also propose a new technique for extracting the connected part of the SFF without the need of disorder averaging by using different symmetry sectors.

Giving Hamiltonian Truncation a Boost

We study Hamiltonian truncation in boosted frames. We consider the thermal and magnetic field deformations of the 2d Ising model using TCSA at finite momentum. We find that even with moderate momenta, the spectrum and time-dependent correlation functions become significantly less dependent on the volume of the system. This allows for a more reliable determination of infinite volume observables.

Thermalization and Hydrodynamics of Two-Dimensional Quantum Field Theories

We consider 2d QFTs as relevant deformations of CFTs in the thermodynamic limit. Using causality and KPZ universality, we place a lower bound on the timescale characterizing the onset of hydrodynamics. The bound is determined parametrically in terms of the temperature and the scale associated with the relevant deformation. This bound is typically much stronger than $\frac{1}{T}$, the expected quantum equilibration time. Subluminality of sound further allows us to define a thermodynamic $C$-function, and constrain the sign of the $\mathcal T\bar{\mathcal T}$ term in EFTs.

Snowmass White Paper: Hamiltonian Truncation

Strongly-coupled Quantum Field Theories (QFTs) are ubiquitous in high energy physics and many-body physics, yet our ability to do precise computations in such systems remains limited. Hamiltonian Truncation is a method for doing nonperturbative computations of real-time evolution in strongly coupled QFT in the continuum limit, and works by numerically solving the Schrodinger equation in a truncated subspace of the full Hilbert space. Recent advances in understanding this method have opened the door to progress in a range of applications, from gauge theories in $d\ge 2$ dimensions to relativistic nonequilibrium physics.

Nonperturbative Matching Between Equal-Time and Lightcone Quantization

We investigate the nonperturbative relation between lightcone (LC) and standard equal-time (ET) quantization in the context of $λϕ^4$ theory in $d=2$. We discuss the perturbative matching between bare parameters and the failure of its naive nonperturbative extension. We argue that they are nevertheless the same theory nonperturbatively, and that furthermore the nonperturbative map between bare parameters can be extracted from ET perturbation theory via Borel resummation of the mass gap. We test this map by using it to compare physical quantities computed using numerical Hamiltonian truncation methods in ET and LC.

Chiral Limit of 2d QCD Revisited with Lightcone Conformal Truncation

We study the chiral limit of 2d QCD with a single quark flavor at finite $N_c$ using LCT. By modifying the LCT basis according to the quark mass in a manner motivated by 't Hooft's analysis, we are able to restore convergence for quark masses much smaller than the QCD strong coupling scale. For such small quark masses, the IR of the theory is expected to be well described by the Sine-Gordon model. We verify that LCT numerics are able to capture in detail the spectrum and correlation functions of the Sine-Gordon model. This opens up the possibility for studying deformations of various integrable CFTs using LCT by considering the chiral limit of QCD like theories.

Nonperturbative dynamics of (2+1)d $ϕ^4$-theory from Hamiltonian truncation

We use Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT) -- a version of Hamiltonian truncation -- to study the nonperturbative, real-time dynamics of $ϕ^4$-theory in 2+1 dimensions. This theory has UV divergences that need to be regulated. We review how, in a Hamiltonian framework with a total energy cutoff, renormalization is necessarily \emph{state-dependent}, and UV sensitivity cannot be canceled with standard local operator counterterms. To overcome this problem, we present a prescription for constructing the appropriate state-dependent counterterms for (2+1)d $ϕ^4$-theory in lightcone quantization. We then use LCT with this counterterm prescription to study $ϕ^4$-theory, focusing on the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry-preserving phase. Specifically, we compute the spectrum as a function of the coupling and demonstrate the closing of the mass gap at a (scheme-dependent) critical coupling. We also compute Lorentz-invariant two-point functions, both at generic strong coupling and near the critical point, where we demonstrate IR universality and the vanishing of the trace of the stress tensor.

Introduction to Lightcone Conformal Truncation: QFT Dynamics from CFT Data

We both review and augment the lightcone conformal truncation (LCT) method. LCT is a Hamiltonian truncation method for calculating dynamical quantities in QFT in infinite volume. This document is a self-contained, pedagogical introduction and "how-to" manual for LCT. We focus on 2D QFTs which have UV descriptions as free CFTs containing scalars, fermions, and gauge fields, providing a rich starting arena for LCT applications. Along our way, we develop several new techniques and innovations that greatly enhance the efficiency and applicability of LCT. These include the development of CFT radial quantization methods for computing Hamiltonian matrix elements and a new SUSY-inspired way of avoiding state-dependent counterterms and maintaining chiral symmetry. We walk readers through the construction of their own basic LCT code, sufficient for small truncation cutoffs. We also provide a more sophisticated and comprehensive set of Mathematica packages and demonstrations that can be used to study a variety of 2D models. We guide the reader through these packages with several examples and illustrate how to obtain QFT observables, such as spectral densities and the Zamolodchikov $C$-function. Specific models considered are finite $N_c$ QCD, scalar $ϕ^4$ theory, and Yukawa theory.

Solving the 2D SUSY Gross-Neveu-Yukawa Model with Conformal Truncation

We use Lightcone Conformal Truncation to analyze the RG flow of the two-dimensional supersymmetric Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory, i.e. the theory of a real scalar superfield with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric cubic superpotential. The theory depends on a single dimensionless coupling $\bar{g}$, and is expected to have a critical point at a tuned value $\bar{g}_*$ where it flows in the IR to the Tricritical Ising Model (TIM); the theory spontaneously breaks the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry on one side of this phase transition, and breaks SUSY on the other side. We calculate the spectrum of energies as a function of $\bar{g}$ and see the gap close as the critical point is approached, and numerically read off the critical exponent $ν$ in TIM. Beyond the critical point, the gap remains nearly zero, in agreement with the expectation of a massless Goldstino. We also study spectral functions of local operators on both sides of the phase transition and compare to analytic predictions where possible. In particular, we use the Zamolodchikov $C$-function to map the entire phase diagram of the theory. Crucial to this analysis is the fact that our truncation is able to preserve supersymmetry sufficiently to avoid any additional fine tuning.

Conformal Truncation of Chern-Simons Theory at Large $N_f$

We set up and analyze the lightcone Hamiltonian for an abelian Chern-Simons field coupled to $N_f$ fermions in the limit of large $N_f$ using conformal truncation, i.e. with a truncated space of states corresponding to primary operators with dimension below a maximum cutoff $Δ_{\rm max}$. In both the Chern-Simons theory, and in the $O(N)$ model at infinite $N$, we compute the current spectral functions analytically as a function of $Δ_{\rm max}$ and reproduce previous results in the limit that the truncation $Δ_{\rm max}$ is taken to $\infty$. Along the way, we determine how to preserve gauge invariance and how to choose an optimal discrete basis for the momenta of states in the truncation space.

Lightcone Effective Hamiltonians and RG Flows

We present a prescription for an effective lightcone (LC) Hamiltonian that includes the effects of zero modes, focusing on the case of Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) deformed by relevant operators. We show how the prescription resolves a number of issues with LC quantization, including i) the apparent non-renormalization of the vacuum, ii) discrepancies in critical values of bare parameters in equal-time vs LC quantization, and iii) an inconsistency at large N in CFTs with simple AdS duals. We describe how LC quantization can drastically simplify Hamiltonian truncation methods applied to some large N CFTs, and discuss how the prescription identifies theories where these simplifications occur. We demonstrate and check our prescription in a number of examples.
