Anomaly Detection for Automated Data Quality Monitoring in the CMS Detector

Successful operation of large particle detectors like the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider requires rapid, in-depth assessment of data quality. We introduce the ``AutoDQM'' system for Automated Data Quality Monitoring using advanced statistical techniques and unsupervised machine learning. Anomaly detection algorithms based on the beta-binomial probability function, principal component analysis, and neural network autoencoder image evaluation are tested on the full set of proton-proton collision data collected by CMS in 2022. AutoDQM identifies anomalous ``bad'' data affected by significant detector malfunction at a rate 4 -- 6 times higher than ``good'' data, demonstrating its effectiveness as a general data quality monitoring tool.

Longevity Studies of CSC Prototypes Operating with Ar+CO$_{2}$ Gas Mixture and Different Fractions of CF$_{4}$

Studies of Cathode Strip Chamber longevity, comparing Ar+CO2 gas mixtures with fractions of 5%, 2%, and 0% CF4, were performed using several small cathode strip prototype chambers. In each trial, a localized source of radiation was used to irradiate up to an accumulated charge of about 300 mC/cm. Additionally, longevity of a uniformly irradiated prototype operating with 2% CF4 was studied at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility GIF++. Post-hoc analysis of the chamber electrodes using spectroscopy techniques was also done.

The Potential of a TeV-Scale Muon-Ion Collider

We propose the development of a novel muon-proton and muon-nucleus collider facility at the TeV scale that is capable of performing precision deep inelastic scattering measurements in new regimes and providing a rich program in nuclear and particle physics. Such a facility could seed, or leverage, the development of a muon-antimuon collider and make use of the existing hadron accelerator infrastructure when sited at a facility such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Fermilab, or CERN. We discuss the possible energy and luminosity design parameters for several collider configurations, and illustrate the science potential with several studies on deep inelastic scattering kinematics, Higgs and vector boson production, top quark production, and beyond Standard Model leptoquark production. Detector design considerations and a possible road map toward development are also given.

Search for Pair Production of Scalar Leptoquarks

This article describes the search for pair production of scalar leptoquarks performed by the CMS collaboration using the data from the 2010 proton-proton run of the Large Hadron Collider at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV. The following final state signatures from the decay of a pair of scalar leptoquarks are described in here: the di-lepton plus jets final state (where the leptons are either both electrons or both muons) and the lepton plus jets and transverse missing energy final state (where the lepton is an electron).
